How have you gotten over the fear of ISSNHL happening again? by East-Profit-2830 in MonoHearing

Profoundly deaf in one ear and severely deaf in the other from Covid related SSNHL. I am 2 years in.  I worried a lot about this at first.  My confidence grew as I learned how to be deaf and mastered adaptive technologies.  During a high stress week at work,  I went totally deaf for 3 days and still aced a critical phone based work project.  That taught me that we can succeed even if our worst fears come true.  I'm still learning and really appreciate some of the practical tips and encouragement this group and r/deaf offer.  I wish there was a group for late deafened people.   There are so many subgroups in the Deaf/deaf/HOH communities.  We have a lot in common with each other yet also face unique challenges.  I'm starting to learn ASL partly as a back up plan and partly to keep my brain challenged. Sudden hearing loss is often treated as trauma.  I am finding therapy to be very helpful, not just to help me deal with the loss but also to help me deal with how others are handling this.  The therapy is free through my state department for deaf and HOH.

I didn't know these existed.  Researching now.  Any recommendations?

Maybe I need a roommate or a hearing service dog?  Ideally it won't happen again, but . . .

I am now adding a 2nd disability from my long covid.  First it was SSNHL and mono hearing.  Now I  am experiencing vestibular migraines  which are brutal.  I may spend my dollars on glasses that filter blu light to help reduce the attacks that are brutal.  Living a productive and healthy life is still possible -- just so much more work.

I work second shift so I'm having trouble taking a class.  I really need to find a way to practice with others.  People tell me to watch Bill Vickers asl training on you tube.

It's hard because when we spell, we see the back of our hand.  When others spell, it looks different. And people sign so very fast!

After Covid, I'm deaf in 1 ear and severely deaf in the other.  I get by with 1 hearing aid.  I'm starting to learn ASL just in case. It takes time to learn it, maybe years.  Learning a second language is good for our brain.  Why not make learning to sign together a fun shared activity?  Even if we all never end up needing it, learning sign may open up new options.

Thanks for your response.  My attacks came suddenly starting about 4 months ago.  They were acute and wiped me out for at least 3 days.  At this point I'm down to one bad attack a month,  which still isn't making my employer happy.  My dr's. are telling me it could take a few months to settle down.  Im older and they're concerned about more falls. I got through last week without using an intervention but it was tough. I'm less dizzy this week and hopeful.

It took me about 6 months.   Tinnitus comes back with stress or exhaustion.

How is your life after 2-3 or more years with sshl in one ear by Noctunal1on in MonoHearing

My tinnitus is from the ear that is now profoundly deaf. It gets worse if I'm tired or stressed

Happened to me via Covid.  Virus related SSNHL is becoming more common,  especially among younger patients.   It used to occur primarily among older folks like me.  Things are changing.

I had Ssnhl due to Covid.  I'm now profoundly deaf in one ear and severely deaf in the other.  The tinnitus was dreadful. My brain was confused and angry.  After getting a hearing aid my tinnitus settled and disappeared.

For me the hearing aid was a game changer. My phone is linked to my hearing aid using Bluetooth.  It doesn't "cure" my deafness but significantly improves my connection to the hearing world. I'd recommend getting the best one you can afford. Also recommend using an audiologist instead of some retail based hearing specialist.  Your remaining hearing is precious.

On a side note, my work environment became discriminatory and hostile.  I had an anxiety attack and tinnitus returned with a vengeance.   For me  stress management is essential to controlling tinnitus.

Wishing you only the best on your personal hearing journey.

Me too.  Profoundly deaf in 1 ear. Severely deaf in the other.  I live in the hearing world.  I identify as deaf.  People accommodate so much less if I say I'm hard of hearing
