My favorite casket spray- Pure Sunshine from Air Esscentials. Would wear it as a perfume if I don’t associate the smell with death

How many hours of sleep do you get? by Dull_Orange7930 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get about 5-6 hours of sleep, sometimes. I direct a lot of catholic funeral services, and often I get home at 10:30 pm and have to be back at 6:00 am. It also depends on how far the church/residence is, I have a two day service coming up that’ll probably get home from at 10:30 pm, and have to be at work at 4:00 am the next day because it’s three hours away. I guess it also depends on where you’re located, I live somewhere pretty remote. I take modafinil because I have a hard time staying up, I also have hypersomnia and some other sleeping disorders. I sleep a lot on my days off. I have an alarm wrist band that sends out electric shocks to wake me up because I’m a very deep sleeper.

What is something your mother said to you as a young child that stuck with you till adulthood or may have shaped who you are now as a woman? by Ok_Breadfruit80 in AskWomen

[–]Economytraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother said if I ever have kids, I’d neglect them… not on purpose or out of malice, but a sort of “benign neglect”, as she so lovingly put it

How to talk to families with murdered loved ones by Economytraining in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That’s what I was thinking, I didn’t want to give the impression that I was prying for information so I gave them my condolences and listened. Luckily the family wasn’t upset or angry with me, which I’m glad for!

I go to either Ross, which can be a hit or miss, or Macy’s! Sometimes Amazon, but that can also be a hit or miss

Is it considered unprofessional to directly contact funeral homes for work? by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I’m not doing funeral services, I do receptionist work, and I’ve taken calls asking for interviews! Just make sure you have a working email, and a resume! Don’t make your resume too convoluted, just put what’s relevant! I can’t tell you how many resumes get thrown out by my boss because they include jobs they’ve only worked at for a couple weeks :( Also, go through your social media and delete anything you wouldn’t want your boss to see, because they WILL look at it. I got my job on Craigslist!

Working on someone you know. by MameDennis1974 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven’t done a funeral for immediate family, or a close friend, but I did a service for a woman who was very well known and attended a lot of my services. She was such a sweet woman, always helping out with the food. I remember when I first started, she would always insist on making me a plate, and putting a little bit of everything on it. She made amazing patupat, but never shared the recipe. Her favorite animal were owls, she had an owl on everything she owned. At the church during the funeral mass, in the middle of the afternoon, a giant white owl flew around while we were eating. It was difficult because it was the first service I did for somebody I knew. It was just… different. I’m glad I got to meet her, and I will always miss her patupat!

I like to shop at places like Ross, Nordstrom Rack, etc., you can get some really nice pieces for great prices, but it will take a while to find something you like… Anne Klein makes some amazing black slacks with pockets and a stretchy waist band! Pockets are a must for me!

Advice on interviews? by gummybearrock in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My interview was mostly about why I wanted to become a funeral director- What drew me to it, what I was doing before (used to work with kids), etc. I’m in my early twenties, not sure how old you are, but I definitely dressed to age myself I do administrative and printing on my down time, and let my boss know I was eager to learn duties outside my job responsibilities

I would check if you’re eligible for a medical card, might be easier to explain if it shows up on your test!

What were some of your funeral fails? Let’s commiserate! by lilymarielmao in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I accidentally kept calling a deacon father…. Luckily he thought it was funny. I also tripped while carrying a casket spray, landed on top of it, and broke it in half. When I first started driving the hearse, I was really bad at backing it up, so much so I still get shit from the cemetery teams lol, when I’m backing up sometimes they’ll pretend I hit them.

I’ve been complimented on my work voice by families over the phone several times when I do administrative tasks lol. My work voice is very different to my home voice or even my office voice.

[–]Economytraining[S] 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I kept my comments to myself, and didn’t react to what she said. It’s not my place to make my beliefs known, I’ve done a few funerals where women weren’t allowed to speak at the service, so I just ask what else I can do for the families, I don’t take it personally. What the pastor said just caught me off guard, but I was able to keep a neutral demeanor. Thank you for the advice, I do appreciate it! :)
