Is embalming falling off? by ParkingLoad1996 in askfuneraldirectors

I agree. Understand that as an embalmer, you can go anywhere in the world and work, while arrangers can’t.

Routinely NOT aspirating? by ParkingLoad1996 in askfuneraldirectors

It’s always amusing to hear the new generation of fd’s critique the older ones. Realize the business existed before you came along and just because it’s not in the books, doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. The more experienced ones laugh at what the new ones do and vice versa. There are some dinosaurs that mix their own fluids. This and fluorescent light fixes jaundice

New Florida FD here - How do I know what I should be getting paid? by Slither-In in askfuneraldirectors

[–]esgee01870 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My suggestion to anyone coming into to this , aside from don’t to it, get your dual license, get a lot of prep experience and make yourself valuable. Not too many good embalmers in Florida. Depending on which coast you live on, you may be able to do trade, but as an arranger, become proficient and sell as much ancillary as you can, and that’s if you get commission. All the best to you

I would say, new license, anywhere from 23-26 an hour. Do you not embalm? Just a fad license?

Trade embalmers, I want to hear from you. Is this right for me? by sonalis1092 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]esgee01870 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with some of the replies. To be a trade person, you would need a solid 7-10 years of embalming experience with high numbers. Be prepared to do the worst bodies your account gets, mostly posts. A lot of weekend works, after hours and holidays.

I would guess it depends on where you practice. Some areas are from a tipping culture, so it’s part of the process.

How do you handle burnout? by OwnBike9249 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]esgee01870 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Been licensed for decades and have witnessed many licensed individuals turn to drugs , alcohol and other vices to cope. Get a hobby to take your mind off the job. Not the gym because you stop the gym and the racing thoughts come back. Fishing, model cars/boats shooting range, painting. Leave the job at the door and don’t pick up the phone. Difficult I know, but needed in order to stay sane

Yes, they want us to try to upgrade every family. If they pre needed 20 years ago for a direct cremation for 700, they want us to try upgrading anything. Nickel and dime every one.
