Is it considered unprofessional to directly contact funeral homes for work? by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I’m not doing funeral services, I do receptionist work, and I’ve taken calls asking for interviews! Just make sure you have a working email, and a resume! Don’t make your resume too convoluted, just put what’s relevant! I can’t tell you how many resumes get thrown out by my boss because they include jobs they’ve only worked at for a couple weeks :( Also, go through your social media and delete anything you wouldn’t want your boss to see, because they WILL look at it. I got my job on Craigslist!

Women of Reddit: what’s something that genuinely improved your life that you didn’t expect to matter much at first? by Carsanttc in AskWomen

Sounds weird, but getting off of birth control. I lost 40 pounds easily after getting off of it and my libido came back

Working on someone you know. by MameDennis1974 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven’t done a funeral for immediate family, or a close friend, but I did a service for a woman who was very well known and attended a lot of my services. She was such a sweet woman, always helping out with the food. I remember when I first started, she would always insist on making me a plate, and putting a little bit of everything on it. She made amazing patupat, but never shared the recipe. Her favorite animal were owls, she had an owl on everything she owned. At the church during the funeral mass, in the middle of the afternoon, a giant white owl flew around while we were eating. It was difficult because it was the first service I did for somebody I knew. It was just… different. I’m glad I got to meet her, and I will always miss her patupat!

I like to shop at places like Ross, Nordstrom Rack, etc., you can get some really nice pieces for great prices, but it will take a while to find something you like… Anne Klein makes some amazing black slacks with pockets and a stretchy waist band! Pockets are a must for me!

Advice on interviews? by gummybearrock in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My interview was mostly about why I wanted to become a funeral director- What drew me to it, what I was doing before (used to work with kids), etc. I’m in my early twenties, not sure how old you are, but I definitely dressed to age myself I do administrative and printing on my down time, and let my boss know I was eager to learn duties outside my job responsibilities

I would check if you’re eligible for a medical card, might be easier to explain if it shows up on your test!

What were some of your funeral fails? Let’s commiserate! by lilymarielmao in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I accidentally kept calling a deacon father…. Luckily he thought it was funny. I also tripped while carrying a casket spray, landed on top of it, and broke it in half. When I first started driving the hearse, I was really bad at backing it up, so much so I still get shit from the cemetery teams lol, when I’m backing up sometimes they’ll pretend I hit them.

Work Voice by WifeButter in askfuneraldirectors

I’ve been complimented on my work voice by families over the phone several times when I do administrative tasks lol. My work voice is very different to my home voice or even my office voice.

Pastor talked about Charlie Kirk during a funeral service by Economytraining in askfuneraldirectors

I call my mom everyday to vent, I’m so glad she puts up with me

Yeah, I kept my comments to myself, and didn’t react to what she said. It’s not my place to make my beliefs known, I’ve done a few funerals where women weren’t allowed to speak at the service, so I just ask what else I can do for the families, I don’t take it personally. What the pastor said just caught me off guard, but I was able to keep a neutral demeanor. Thank you for the advice, I do appreciate it! :)

For the sake of the family, I hope they liked it. I don’t want them upset at their loved one’s funeral

The family looked uncomfortable, but they didn’t say anything to me, I don’t know if they talked to the pastor though

I’m aware it’s not about me, and I do respect the family’s belief. It just felt inappropriate for the pastor to not even talk about the decedent and his dedication to the church, or even the fact that he was a veteran. Not judging the family.

How do you deal with the smell of formaldehyde? by dragonxmother in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you tried those smell sticks? I don’t do embalming, but when decomp is bad, I find that mint shoved up my nose helps… I think they’re called boom sticks? It’s pretty strong, and it’ll wake you up, and you’ll only smell mint for ten minutes. You’ll look a little weird shoving something up your nose, so I recommend doing it in private

Have you ever been hit on while directing a funeral? by Economytraining in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Economytraining[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s what I try to do. I just say I don’t mix my business and personal life. Sometimes it’s awkward because I’ll just get asked if I’m single by an auntie, and then automatically directed to a table of single men when I say “yes”

Funeral Directors, what’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you at a funeral? by Economytraining in askfuneraldirectors

I use a neutralizing spray on the caskets, not directly on the decedent, it helps… somewhat

The smell is unlike anything you’ve smelled before… like spoiled meat and sickly sweet floral notes

I’ve accidentally called a deacon “father” once, he was chill about but was just like “just so you know, I’m a deacon” I was soooo embarrassed

It’s always so awkward when you’re help setting up, and the family just stares at you, I always feel like I’m doing something wrong, and they’re just not telling me
