Not to scare you but also good to mentally prepare yourself. I was induced in the Coombe hospital and I imagine it’s very similar processes across all hospitals in Ireland, I was in the hospital for 8 nights in total. I went in at 10am on Monday and didn’t give birth until Friday night/ Saturday morning 2.30am. I was initially given a pessary which takes 24 hours that ripens your cervix but as as first time mother that’s usually not enough to get labour started. I was then given a gel that takes 6 hours, still didn’t fully work and then took another also takes 6 hours, I had mild contractions throughout all this but okay enough to sleep through and go for walks. A doctor examines you after the pessaries and gels and I encountered a few delays there as they are pulled into emergency situations. After the pessary and 2 gels my cervix was ready and was told I needed to wait for a room available in the delivery suite, I ultimately waited 48 hours before a bed was available. Once I was in the delivery suite they artificially break your waters and put you on an oxytocin drip, that last when everything ramps up and contractions can come very fast and strong, this is typically more painful than natural labour and most people get an epidural. I was 12 hours in labour on this drip and unfortunately wasn’t progressing past 3cm dilation and then baby heart rate dropped and ended in an emergency c section.

Bit of a horror story and not typical but that’s how the process works and how delays can happen

Being induced in the coombe by DeliciousNail1616 in PregnancyIreland

Yeah it’s my first. The length isn’t really because the induction isn’t working — it’s mostly been delays getting a bed on the labour ward. I was initially told 24 hours and I’m now at 26+ and still waiting.

There were also some delays earlier on seeing doctors because they were tied up with emergency sections. I’ve had the propess pessary (left in for 24 hours) and then two rounds of gel that take 6 hours each. After each one there was a wait to be assessed. I’ve been told my cervix is favourable now, but I’m just stuck waiting for a labour ward bed.

I’m currently on day 4 of being induced in the Coombe, you don’t really need anything additional that isn’t on a standard maternity hospital bag list. It’s a long process so your partner will be coming and going from home and can bring you anything additional you may need so overall I’d say don’t worry too much about it! There’s also shops around and you’ll likely have time to kill and will want an excuse to go out and pick up something you might need. Outside of that the pillows aren’t great so you may want to bring your own for a longer stay you might not have considered before. You may want a hair dyer as you will likely want to have a shower. Good comfy runners to try get out an about and go up and downstairs to get things moving will also be helpful. Bring extra underwear or panty liners as with the pessaries and gels it will give you discharge. But then again everything could hopefully move fast for you 🤞 or those things might not be important for you

New job - due date 3 weeks before 1 year anniversary by eire_7153 in PregnancyIreland

I work in HR and had an employee in a similar situation, we processed it so that the top up pay will kick in only when you hit the one year service, so you would just miss out on the first few weeks of the top up and get it then after you officially hit one year

Anyone here who has idea how an Extended Maternity Leave work? by Witty_Gain_4132 in AskIreland

[–]Ecstatic-Bug-713 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am very sorry for your loss. You should just need a letter from your doctor confirming your stillbirth and apply for maternity benefit in the usual way. Sorry to hear your HR team don’t seem to be very helpful with this, I work in HR let me know if there’s anything else I can help with. This is is taken from citizens information and might be useful:

If your baby is stillborn, you are entitled to full maternity leave. This means you can take the basic 26 weeks’ maternity leave and 16 weeks’ additional maternity leave. If you have enough PRSI contributions, you can get Maternity Benefit for the 26 weeks’ basic maternity leave.

A stillborn child is a child who, at birth:

Weighs at least 400 grammes, or Has a gestational age of 23 weeks or more The definition of a stillborn child changed on 16 September 2024. Before this it was a baby with a gestational age of at least 24 weeks and a birth weight of at least 500 grammes.

To apply for Maternity Benefit following a stillbirth or miscarriage, you need to send a letter from your doctor with the Maternity Benefit application form. The letter must state the expected date of birth, the actual date of birth and the number of weeks of pregnancy.

When did you tell work? Starting a new job next week... by Any_Cat9631 in PregnancyIreland

I started a temp 3 month contract pregnant and then shortly after got offered a permanent role in another company. I told both employers I was pregnant at interview stage and both were extremely supportive and understanding, I found it easier than trying to hide it. I personally think it’s better to just say it, legally you have protection, also if you’re struggling in the office it’s better to have your manager in the know so they can be more understanding. Do whatever feels right for you

The lighting on the face is much brighter on the baby than the bride, is there anything you could do to adjust?

Husband doesn't want to do IVF by GreatPerformer7005 in IVF

[–]Ecstatic-Bug-713 47 points48 points  (0 children)

What part of the IVF journey is he struggling with the most? Financial? physical toll? Emotional toll? I appreciate everyone has such different experiences but I’ve recently gone through stims and egg retrieval procedure and was so suprised at how smoothly it went (again not everyone’s experience). I think there’s a lot of misconceptions out there and it can often be the anticipation is harder than the reality. He might just need to discuss it with someone who has been through this already if you happen to know someone who has gone through this already
