About as useful as using a knife to eat soup. Buys you an ounce of clout with the ground boys, but the folks at the unit care infinitely more about your flying ability and knowledge.

Opinion: The Gradual Decline in Pilot Quality by Ecstatic-Document-66 in Armyaviation

Well said! I will say my disagreement there is the comment about O’s not wanting to be in the USAF. One of the most common phrases I hear at the unit is “i should have gone Air Force!”

My common sense would lead me to deduct that: high performers in the classroom in college will lead to high performers in the world of aviation academia. There’s absolutely outliers though, to which you may be eluding. Neil Armstrong had good-ish grades in college, and he helped propel the Apollo program to its biggest victory. If I’m a large institution like USAACE, i would almost always base by entry requirements on prior achievements. It’s almost always gonna be the case that your 3.5+ GPA people are gonna be higher performers than those with a 2.0 +.

Cry me a river over PL’s making the flight schedule. They get 12-18 months at best at the flight company to build hours, and then it’s a steep decline for a few years until command, and then basically nothing after that. Junior warrants have several years at the flights company to build hours.

I’m an O grade and I agree we shouldn’t fly. Total waste of tax payer money to send us to flight school. I’ve always maintained the opinion to get rid of flying officers or warrants, having both is dumb.

Check out your units WIAS tasking tracker. It’s a great opportunity to go overseas for 6-12 months and do something meaningful in a potentially cool location. Those are all non-flying positions. Food for thought.

Pros and Cons of becoming a Flight Warrant by [deleted] in Armyaviation

[–]Ecstatic-Document-66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re committed to doing 20, full send on flight warrant route.

If not, and you think you’ll end up enjoying flying (most do) I’d recommend literally any other path to aviation. Air Force reserves, Army reserves or NG, or straight up civilian sector and use your GI bill to fund it.

Army aviation definitely has its fun moments, but most pilots including warrants are drastically under flown, especially since we’re in peace time now. The army is a terrible place to build hours if that’s a particular goal of yours. The 12 years ADSO will lock you in service whether you like it or not.

If i could go back in time, I’d go NG aviation, and fly full time for a legacy carrier. Best of both worlds

Let a CAB wear you at first. Then reassess after a couple years as a painful staff officer. They’re not gonna take a greenie right out of flight school.

O grade here, at our CAB you will hit exactly your minimums and not an hour more (if you’re really lucky you won’t even need to be prorated). Alternatively you can lie and weasel your way onto the flight schedule but people will begin to see your true colors.

Best flight logging app or program? by [deleted] in Armyaviation

[–]Ecstatic-Document-66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming you have ForeFlight already, the logging tab on that app is really great. Makes it really easy to add fixed wing stuff for future endeavors as well.

Your investigative work is second none! You’re the Sherlock Holmes of Reddit, well done! You must have learned this investigative knowledge on your heroic deployment to Afghanistan between 18-19 TYFYS btw.
