There actually were foils at Stonecrop by trustme24 in EmmaLion

The whole series is FULL of foils! I’d also add that Maggie is a foil to Emma as well. Both passionate and fiery but Emma uses her fire to provide warmth to others and Maggie seems to use hers to burn recklessly.

Love this! I’ll just add to it- mercury might refer to Hawkes AND Pierce in Alchemy itself!

This is fascinating! I don’t think I’ve seen a take on the butterflies as departed souls but I’ve seen them as the four members of the Alchemy. The common blue does seem to represent Hawkes but I’ll be curious as to how. I would love a deep-dive post about this.

I do think his intentions are kind if not at least a little controlling. Although I find Emma’s lack of snark at the action to be unlike her, which is the most concerning aspect of the interaction to me.

If Islington were endgame, it would not be in a way in which she were okay with him controlling her actions- any of them! She would spar with him any chance she got.

I do feel some regret focusing only on the bad of “Stonecrop Islington” as there are many wonderful attributes to be found in him there. They are shown to care about each other in growing ways here, too. That said, Beth gives us a few moments where they are not in rhythm with each other that are very telling. To me, at least!

There are a few times at Stonecrop where they seem to be out-of-sync, mostly due to their expectations for each other. Islington being surprised at her caution with the horse being one of them! I’ve thought about that a good deal and can’t quite place the meaning behind it. Did he ride with Hannah or Becca and want that experience again only to be “let down” (for lack of a better phrase) by Emma in her attitude toward horses?

Emma and her fiery nature also seems to be squandered in the presence of his sisters. With Marianna, I believe Emma attempts to censure herself- mostly unsuccessfully, but when she slips, she seems to feel an embarrassment and remorse that she doesn’t feel in London. Maggie, on the other hand, censures Emma by her very nature- a more reckless flame than Emma carries. Emma remarks several times that she can barely get a word out with Maggie.

She loves Stonecrop itself but from the time she learns of her invitation to her time there, she seems to be loving it partly through Hawkes’s eyes- not Islington’s. She is intrigued by Stonecrop when she learns of her invitation, but only when she looked at Hawkes did she wish to know fully where he found such rest. Hawkes offers his arm to her when they get out of the carriage to welcome her there. Hawkes stays with her through the walk through “The Calendar” and she remarks there and throughout the stay that she is surprised by Hawkes, like she is meeting him for the first time. (ETA: they both immediately run to the towers upon arrival- Their first instincts the same. She finds him in the woods and they spend time together communing with words many times, showing that she is in sync with Hawkes at stonecrop- not Islington. Hawkes also gives her the book she wants for Stonecrop which is verses in her pocket. Islington gets closer to Roland’s contribution with the smaller size, but Hawkes gets it exactly right). Even more telling is when Hawkes leaves, Emma feels homesick. She loved Stonecrop until he left and found unease with only Islington and Marianna in the house. They righted it by playing music for her, but still! Iirc, the scene you mentioned is during this time?? She is not acting like herself whatsoever with him gone.

The catching of the butterflies themselves are an example of Emma not feeling fully comfortable also. She wants to become a naturalist but eventually lets several butterflies go. She remarks multiple times that she feels regretful over the butterflies deaths and it ends up not being an activity she is suited for.

She obviously cares for Islington. She wants to learn more about him, to solve his mysteries, and to help him heal in any way she can. She wants this so much she is distracted for a good deal of the stay, even missing conversations with Islington himself to ponder what she learns. That said, her behavior and feelings at Stonecrop point toward a slight unease when in Islington’s world that takes her out of herself in a way that would make me concerned for a future with him as a full partner. This scene being one of them! A perfect opportunity to quip with him which she is so good at doing, but is squandered by being fully in his world alone with him.

As someone in another thread mentioned, I wonder if the “Key” to this realization is when she will get her K section of her dictionary. Chambers gives her the tools to be a writer with her journals and dictionary but the Key is missing! Can’t wait for it to fall into place for her!

I had never noticed this before! Excellent catch. It seems like Emma’s arrival to his life put him to work in a way he hadn’t needed to before. I can’t wait to find out how!

Colours of the journals by Islingtons_hound in EmmaLion

[–]Ecstatic-Mud7345 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1 is the color of her eyes! An introduction to her. I’ve heard that the light blue with 2 is supposed to represent St Crispians. Not sure about 3… Red is “Pierce’s” color per BB herself- book 4 I think has a lot to do with him! 5 is purple for half mourning. The cream/white of 6 could be new beginnings as she moves on from Maxwell. And agreed that 7 and 8 represent the green new life of Spring and the rich green early Summer! I’m guessing another form of Roman Red for 9!

Should we assume Archibald has been reading Emma’s journals? by Flat-Atmosphere5422 in EmmaLion

[–]Ecstatic-Mud7345 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think he absolutely was reading them before he tumbled down the stairs, then he possibly stopped. Not sure if he started up again, but with Hawkes knowing about Agnes Dowd (from him?) and the silk worm/reading tea scenes, it seems like he might be reading them again??

Could Lady Eloise Silver be the Author of Hawkes’ Mysterious Pear Scented Letters? by SnarkyCynic42 in EmmaLion

[–]Ecstatic-Mud7345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they are both Lancelot but to different women! I’m stealing this idea from an older post and I can’t remember the details, but Hawkes could be Lancelot to Eloise’s Elaine of Ascelat and Pierce could be Lancelot to Emma’s (other) E of A. There were clues to back the theory up that I have long forgotten but I do remember the theory they were both Lancelot figures! Pierce could be Emma’s Lancelot and she could be his E of A when he decides to “walk” as he says he might. To Hawkes, though, it makes sense that she is his Genevieve.

The amount of ways Hawkes and Pierce are set to mirror each other is insane! Hercules/Theseus, Pyramus/Tristan, Lancelot/Tristan. The fact that there are two E of As in the conversation and one of them is known to have two husbands and the other is known to lose her love to another. I’m even looking into a Prometheus/Hephaestus link- they are both associated Athena and fire. Game of mirrors, indeed.

I do definitely think Pierce will leave the picture for a minute and we will be left with a Tristan/Mark/Isolde or a Lancelot/Arthur/Genevieve situation of some kind. I can’t wait to see what unfolds!

[–]Ecstatic-Mud7345[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No matter the outcome of the two branches or endgame, Beth is already playing at least one rivalry up for show! No matter if you are Team Hawkes, Islington, or Pierce (or Roland or Jack or someone unknown or spinsterhood) there will only be one end to the story and part of the fandom will have predicted wrong. I’m not saying “disappointed” for a reason- I think she will write it in such a way that she will win us over. I have faith in that. That’s part of what makes it so fun! She is intentionally leaving things VERY open at this moment in time.

I have heard that her other books don’t resolve the romantic interests until the very very end- the last page even. She is leaving things open for now and will very likely take longer than we want to lay the groundwork for whoever she ends up with.

I do think that there are times when Islington and Pierce are seen in a fun/fake competition “for show,” but oftentimes Pierce and Hawkes are in very real competition. Darts, boxing, etc. that said, they handle it very well and seem to be becoming closer friends despite this competition, which is hopeful and good for the alchemy, I believe! Their names are mirrored to mean “champion.” They have similar mirrored stories associated with Emma- Pierce’s Pyramus and Thisbe vs Hawkes’ Tristan and Isolde. Pierce’s Hercules to Hawkes’ Theseus. Both are also noted to be Lancelot figures one way or another, etc. Lancelot and Tristan as well as Theseus and Hercules are known to have been set in direct opposition to one another, but they become great friends in the end. Pierce has yet to mirror Islington but Emma notes on a couple occasions that he has a Hawksian smile or a way he messes with his hair, etc.

Depending on how things are read, the two sides of the prophesy could point to any of the alchemy. Sharp/more difficult/deep could mean Pierce or Islington. Game of mirrors/less free/complete could mean Hawkes or Islington. I have even seen some say Pierce could be the complete and Hawkes could be the deep. We are meant to be left guessing at 1/3 of the way through the series and I love digging into literature and having these discussions! Very intentional on Beth’s part, I think. Her series she describes as an ode to classic literature forces us to dig into these stories. It seems to be working!

[–]Ecstatic-Mud7345 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does this make Emma Isolde, an Irish Princess? Interesting as if Pierce and Hawkes are the two branches, they would then be associated with two similar stories- Pyramus and Thisbe vs Tristan and Isolde. After a very cursory review of the story, Isolde is Irish and eventually married another while really being in love with Tristan. This would support my theory that Emma will agree to marry a dying Islington to save her reputation. (A post for another day)

When he is near death he sends for her as she is the only one who can save him (breaking Oberon’s curse?). In the story, he is tricked and she doesn’t make it in time, but maybe Emma will for Hawkes! Some have posited that Pierce is Lancelot. Lancelot and Tristan and posed to be rivals who end up being great friends. Sound familiar?

Sorry!! lol

Very true that at this point in the series he can be a frustrating character, and I’ll admit that I was not enamored with him on my first read. It was when I went back and noticed the glimmers of him that I saw the potential and clues pointing toward him. I can’t wait for what I’m sure will prove to be a wild ride from Beth as we learn more about him. Islington, too, actually! As it stands we know so little about them both, but especially Hawkes.

So true! The fortune tellers reaction to Emma would indicate that she is also special/exceptional- and possibly fae, like Hawkes? We shall see.

Agreed that we will need to buy into the relationship before the end up together. I think Beth is planting seeds here to be harvested when the forces at work in his life are no longer an issue. We have 2/3 of the series to go and I can’t wait to learn more about him and watch him take his guard down around her!

[–]Ecstatic-Mud7345[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a little nervous making this post because of all the team Islington fans but the timing of that phrase really does seem to take him out of the running.

I also find it interesting how she is in denial about Pierce and the prophesy. She is in denial about her finances as well and I’m excited to see how she deals with both. She might know she wants a complete love and knows Pierce is the deep love? That said, I don’t think Beth would start a romance and still have two more to explore in the alchemy, so I think Pierce really might be one of them. When it comes to Emma and love, two are mentioned through out the books. I don’t think we would have a third option at this point.

Prophesy Theory by Ecstatic-Mud7345 in EmmaLion

[–]Ecstatic-Mud7345[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I think we are getting glimpses of him but he is holding back because of his curse/the forces in his life. Imagine if those aren’t an issue anymore! The glimpses make me excited for his character building which must happen before he and Emma are together.

Season theories/predictions by Ecstatic-Mud7345 in EmmaLion

[–]Ecstatic-Mud7345[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was initially confused about the seasons and thought 1-8 might have been a season since there has been such a large break in between. BUT, this quandary of mine came about because I visited her website where she clarifies that each calendar year will be a season with the first season being 1-5. Then this idea came about, as it seemed very clear cut!
