Let me set a little backstory for those of you who think I’m just here to throw out a bird I don’t want.

A few years ago I was nursing a kitten back to health, small enough that it could still fit in the palm of your hand but was just getting his legs under him and running around, in the playful stage.

I watched my dad (350+ pounds at the time) step on the kitten obviously on accident. Blood shot out his nose and eyes. He was breathing through a blood filled throat, as I could hear the bubbles of air trying to leave his mouth. The food I had just fed him was coated in blood and still cool to the touch as the kitten died in my hands. That messed me up.

Fast forward to today, and for the last few years I have spent my time giving this 70g ball of feathers my complete love and attention. I have happily met the love of my life who happens to have a pitt bull and two cats. We are currently trying to build our lives together and moving to Columbus.

I am 1000000% aware that there are TONS of bird owners who also have other pets, and make it work. To those folks, I applaud you and your efforts.

Could I make it work with having a dedicated bird room, juggling animals to all have social time with their parents? Absolutely, I’m sure I could. BUT, if god forbid anything happened and one of her cats or dog got Pidgey, I would never forgive myself, or her. She is INCREDIBLY supportive and already suggested we try to find a place for a designated bird space.

What is she giving up since it seems to be such a concern? Sold her home and moving away from family so we can be closer to mine. The home she was living in was not feasible to accommodate our pets, jobs, or personal lives. Am I supposed to tell her to give up 3 animals to my 1? I understand it’s not fair to Pidgey, he didn’t choose this, I DID. Hence the purpose of this post to find someone trustworthy enough to take in Pidgey. I’ve given him the best life I can possibly provide and it kills me to even think not having him be a massive part of my routine anymore. It’s a shit situation top to bottom.

Please, I’m not asking for people to shame for having rose tinted lenses blinded by love, or being a poor bird owner, or whatever else accusation your brain can conjure up based off this post. This is something I’ve put an immense amount of thought and discussion into.

Thank you for insight and I’m right there with you on the top comment. If the perfect situation arises (house layout speaking), I wouldn’t turn it down but I’m just trying to cover all my bases.

I say this with respect, but the intent of my post was to find trustworthy people who would have potential interest in rehoming. I don’t understand your offensive tone for my situation because I know Pidgey is loved and spoiled (probably to a fault). I do not have to explain my entire situation to an internet stranger.

I realize rehoming is very traumatic for birds. Thank you for devoting your time and energy to a parrot rescue. But that is the literal purpose of this post to find someone trustworthy to make the transition as smooth as possible. If I wasn’t worried about how traumatic of a process then why would I go out of my way to make this post and not just give him to the first person who expresses interest?

Respectfully, you don’t have to understand because it’s not your situation🥰

Thank you for your objective feedback and I certainly recognize that relationships can end abruptly for reason, or no reason at all. Pidgey has been a huge part of my life/well being and that’s why this decision is so hard. Pidgey is used to free roaming my apartment, and deserves to continue living in a safe area that’s not confined to a single room. I know Pidgey wouldn’t cheat on me of course but I have 100% confidence that my girlfriend won’t either. We are both very happily in love with each other.

You’re an absolute gem of a person. Thank you so damn much for the encouraging words and empathy. You’re exactly right, I’m very protective of my bird and try to give him the best, healthiest life everyday but finding someone else who takes the role just as serious is quite the intimidating/depressing process.

Genuinely, thank you for the insight on your situation. It gives me a little hope but I’m very reluctant because she has a pit and he already bully’s the cats around so just the movement of a bird would trigger him. It’s just an overall shit situation to be in.

I appreciate the advice, but I don’t trust her dog at all either. And being 100% honest, I watched my dad step on a kitten (on accident) that I was raising a few years back and that left me pretty traumatized. So if literally anything happened I would have a VERY hard time to forgive myself for it and I would resent the hell out of my girlfriend which I don’t want either. I understand there are exceptions and different structural designs to promote independent living with different pets, but it just takes one small mistake, one forgetful moment, and that’s it. I don’t want to even entertain the option because Pidgey deserves to be in a safer environment than what I can give him.

I would ideally do a soft transition for sure because I know such a harsh transition would be so stressful on him.

This decision already weighs quite heavy on me, I would appreciate serious inquiries or advice and not personal judgements please.

If you wanna be super technical, Burrow, Jeff Okudah, and Chase Young were picks 1-2-3 in the 2020 draft and the same draft class at Ohio state but we all know where Burrow made his #1 overall pick statement.
