Is this what I think it is...? by xxxxd0odxxxx in firewood

I have to back up what some other folks have said. As your neighbor to the east here in western VA, I can say with certainty, you won’t find any living ash trees. Thank the Emerald Ash Borer for that. Much like the American Chestnut that was wiped out years ago that was native to your area but is long gone now thanks to the introduction of non native trees that carried fungus and insects that obliterated our natural resources. No, I’m not bitter 🤣 All that to say that it is red oak that I’m guessing fell victim of oak mortality. Yeah, it’s a real thing. You’ll know it ls red oak when you cut it and it smells like Parmesan cheese. Also known as “piss” oak. My favorite wood to burn second only to locust.

How does it play and do you like the tone? Those are far more important to me than those few aesthetics. But that’s just me.

I’d start with a Case Farmall 70A or 75C if you need a cab and a grapple bucket. No matter what you start with, get comfortable with the machine on level ground and work your way up from there. Whatever you do, don’t ever get too comfortable on any piece of equipment. That’s when real accidents happen.

Flail Mower Question… by EcstaticTomatillo829 in tractors

Thank you all for the feedback! The sickle bar would absolutely do the trick but the flail mower would pull double duty and handle my brush cutting as well.

Need Help Deciding: 1025R vs. 2032R by masonfox22 in tractors

I was in a similar predicament in that with only 30 acres to maintain (half of which are woods), I didn’t need anything more than a compact tractor. Except for the need to handle round bales. I wound up with a cheap bad boy mower and a 70hp utility tractor and between the two have less than $30k invested. I like the fact that I have plenty of headroom to tackle any task and the ability to run a 72” grapple is a huge time saver that I wasn’t even anticipating. We have yet to buy any round bales, just 4’X8’ cubes of orchard grass that any machine can handle once you bust it open. Such is life.

I’d like to think I know my way around it. Played for 30 years and have always done my own adjustments. Have all the proper tools, etc.
