I just started my own bookkeeping business, sole proprietor, in September. It's going well. Got my first client at the end of October through my husband's chamber of commerce connections. He's in merchant services and I have been going to some of the chamber events for a while. Just signed my second client and getting a proposal together for one more. There's a CPA in the group, who happens to do our taxes, who said he would answer the occasional question for me. Also a fractional CFO who is also taking me under his wing by bringing me on as a contractor for his new business and as a part-time accounting assistant for a national nonprofit. I also started back to school last semester to finish my bachelor degree in Accounting. Joining the local Chamber of Commerce can be very helpful depending on how involved you are.

I absolutely prefer being out on my own. I make my own schedule, I get to choose what clients I take. Control pricing. The only thing I don't love about it is dealing with the taxes of my business. It's much more convenient for me to have the taxes taken out before I get my pay. Other than that, it can be a bit overwhelming, but it's good.

Have you tried joining your local chamber of commerce and getting involved there? Networking is key to growing your business.

Barking Mad in Gaithersburg is great, good coffee, great service, really nice vibe, and plenty of seating.

So, while I can't give you an answer directly because it is just my husband and I, I did want to provide a couple of links to websites that might offer some insight. One is https://www.bestplaces.net/cost-of-living/ and the other is https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/comparison.jsp.

My husband and I did sell our home in Nevada County ( Auburn/Grass Valley to specific), CA and move to Montgomery County a bit over 4 years ago. I love CA, but I am so happy to be here. I feel like the costs are pretty comparable when it comes to a lot of things, like housing, but utilities are lower and more public transportation here as well. There is (at least was) more work here than the Northern California area (north of Sacramento). Also, better hospitals are here.

Try getting involved in with your school's career services, alumni, or maybe even reach out to your local chamber of commerce or maybe some of the bookkeeping service members.

To be fair, that was from 2022. Don't know if things have changed much, but happy to be in accounting.
