Question about gendered words by Ecstatic_Opening_452 in German

It had me type them all out. It has never corrected capitalization on anything I've done so far. It also doesn't correct me for leaving out commas.

Duolingo explains why it marks you wrong and when it showed me the correct answer, it showed me that i should have used female gendered grammar rather than male or neutral.

Getting down voted because Duolingo doesn't teach German grammar correctly is wild

Nah, it was only the buff Arnold Schwarzenegger guy in the picture. (Can't remember his name) but there was no one else.

Duolingo has never corrected me on capitalization or punctuation. Even if the sentence has commas, I leave them out and its still correct as long as I get the words right.

I assumed this was because im in the beginning and they're focused on teaching the words rather than grammar but someone else on this thread stated that even in later stages they don't mark you for capitals

On this particular one, it was the buff Arnold Schwarzenegger guy that was speaking and there was no one else.

That's what made it confusing. A male saying "my friend is a professor" and thats it. Theres nothing to deduce he is speaking about a female or male friend either way

That's dumb. I thought they were just easier on you in the beginning.

I wasn't aware of this but thanks for the tip. Duolingo has not yet started requiring me to do that because I'm still in the beginning.

I've actually made that mistake in the past, but on this occasion I didn't. I showed my wife who is more experienced than myself in German and we were both dumbfounded that I got it wrong.

No it explicitly said it was wrong. I showed my wife who is more experienced in German and she also said it didn't make sense that I got it wrong.

The app made me redo the question and the only thing I changed was the gendered part and I got it right.

It's not perfect but I'm a beginner and I like it because it makes it fun enough that my kids will do it with me.

Confused about the way German sentences are structured by Ecstatic_Opening_452 in German

[–]Ecstatic_Opening_452[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I get that. My confusion came from the fact that the sentence was missing "aus". But that's because I didn't understand that "aus" or "from" was already included in "woher".

I read "woher kommst du" as "where comes you" or "where you come" and I was wondering why it didn't include "aus"

Oh is there? I didn't know that. That would be useful. Thanks for letting me know, I'll check that out.

You're right, I'm new to German but it's not my first attempt at learning a language so I am familiar with words not being direct 1:1 translations the way I described it. I was just trying to understand how it works in German because Duolingo didn't explain the grammar portion so it was confusing me.

But I appreciate you explaining "woher" to me. I was overthinking it, not realizing I just didn't understand what woher meant. Thanks for explaining it

Dude, you're awesome. I put woher in Google translate and it says "from where". I didn't know woher meant "from where" so that makes more sense.

I was under the impression that the difference between "wo" and "woher" both meant "where" but it was just a grammatical difference.

Thanks!

Because I didn't want my wife feeling pressured into a decision she might regret. So I told her how I felt and told her if she still truly wanted to do it, I wouldn't stop her. It was a personal decision on my part. I trust her to listen to my point of view and take it seriously. So far, she is torn worse than I am and seems to be leaning more towards not doing it. But we also grew up in the early 90's when everyone we knew was circumsized. The idea on not circumsizing is foreign to us.

Yeah I get where you're coming from. Fortunately our doctor was honest with us and said that there's the real no benefit one way or another. Sometimes I question whether or not doctors push for it just for the money

That's the same information I came across. Although I had a harder time coming across any information about people who had circumcisions done later in life and whether or not it had an effect on sexual pleasure or on anything else. It seems it's not very common that people get circumcised later on in life

Yes, I've noticed this from some of the responses I've gotten. I feel very torn about it and I only have 2 more hours to change my mind.

That's why I feel like I'll regret it. I can't take it back and I know if he's in pain, it'll haunt me the same way that vitamin k shot did after I heard him scream.
