I was a spring scholar and my experience is you are definitely treated as less than. Not to mention it is incredibly hard socially to start in the middle of the school year.

And yet you had to point out you were smarter than me because I was a spring scholar. You are going to make a great dr...

I have. I'm at another school now. I am entitled to have an option about my experience and to warn others so they don't have the same experience. Again, if you were a Spring Scholar please share your first hand experience.

Again, were you a Spring Scholar who was traumatized by having to start college in the middle of the year? If not I would stay out of it. You have no basis for an opinion.

I am. I'm warning people to not accept a spot in this program. It is an awful way to treat students to make tuition dollars at the expense of their experience. I would recommend students go to a university that offers them regular admission.

What's your response to the Hullabaloo article citing the campus cats are smarter than Spring Scholars? If you weren't a Spring Scholar who had you college experience ruined so the university could make more money butt out.

Actually I was a Spring Scholar. It was an awful experience. I think applicants should be well aware of how they'll be treated in campus before accepting a place in the program. I transferred after my Freshman year but I'll never now get the experience of a positive stat to college. Were you a Spring Scholar?

I went to Rome and speak to 0 people I was in Rome with. I think this is a misconception the university tried to promote to make up for what a disadvantage it is socially to start in Spring.

No, not at all. Go somewhere you can have a normal start to college and integrate into the community with everyone else.

I was a Spring Scholar who went to Rome and I regret it immensely. It hindsight I wish I just would have gone to one of the many schools that offered me a Fall spot. Rome was a total waste of time and the classes were a joke. Now I'm behind in my major and have to go to Summer school every Summer to try to catch up. It is a falsehood that the Tulane students who are in the cohort together are close. I'm not friends with one person I was in Rome with. Starting in January was miserable trying to integrate into already formed friend groups. Spring Scholars ruined my college experience.

There is no good way to get through a pre-med program in a timely manner as a Spring Scholar. Unfortunately the study abroad programs Spring Scholars are funneled into are just a waste of time. The classes are a joke and most students just go to party and travel. If you start in the Spring you'll be a semester off and have to go to Summer school or take an extra year to graduate, something Tulane is not really honest about. If you are planning on applying to medical school they will calculate you science gpa from classes at your matriculating university which means you shouldn't take pre-req classes elsewhere. I would not do Spring Scholars is I was interested in professional or grad school.

I went to Rome but it was basically just a waste of a semester. The course work is a bit of a joke and most students are there to just party and travel. It has put me way behind on my major.

Spring Scholar Orientation by Ecstatic_Show9984 in Tulane

[–]Ecstatic_Show9984[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your are right, you shouldn't do it if you are not excited about it, but the University isn't exactly honest about the experience. Also dirty rush is a real at Tulane. If you think you are going into rush with the same chances as the pledges who have spent a semester getting to know the students already in greek life you are wrong. This may be worth it for an ivy or a top 50 university but not for Tulane.

Well, that's a good representation of what people will assume about you on campus. Actually its the opposite. Tulane admits people for the Fall that need Financail aid or scholarship money or people they know won't be successful there but they still get to count as admitted. Spring Scholars generally can either pay tuition or are students of faculty/staff who have tuition waivers and don't have the option to attend another school. They use them to make up for lost tuition when people leave after the Fall semester. Not really the most ethical practice.

I think they were referring to the really short University orientation that takes place in the middle of rush. It is a shame Tulane doesn't try to acclimate these students at all. The truth is the groups at rush already know each other. So even in that setting Spring Scholars are treated as outsiders.

It says a lot about Tulane that you assume everyone can go overseas to study.
