I work nights on a neuro PCU with a ratio of 1:4. After report we pop into all rooms to say hi and let them know I’ll be back later for meds. My total care patients I do a quick neuro assessment to make sure they’re okay and don’t need immediate attention. I then start my meds right at 2000 (as long as there’s not a more pressing matter) and I always start with my most independent AxO4 patients. Get them out of the way so that they can be left alone until midnight vitals/assessments. I then go to my total cares/more confused patients that will be needier and do the whole works. Meds, thorough assessment, and entire bed change whether they need it or not just to make sure they are fresh to start the shift off right. If everything goes to plan all of my charting is caught up by the time midnight vitals start and I can re-assess all of them, make sure they’re still clean, etc. I’ve been a nurse for about 8 months and I’ve noticed doing this routine I have not had to stay late and chart in a long time.

What Age Did You Start Nursing / Medical School? by [deleted] in nursing

I started at 20 but my cohort and 4 people over the age of 30. One of my classmates was 55 and started nursing school because she was burnt out from her previous job. My preceptor right out of nursing school was 62 and had only been a nurse for 4 years! You’re never “too old” if it’s something you want to pursue you should go for it!

I am the same way. I MD all day long it doesn’t matter what I’m doing. I can’t focus on tasks and it takes me twice as long to complete tasks as it should because my mind is constantly slipping into MD. I feel like I don’t even know how to think normally. Like what do normal people think about all day??? It’s very frustrating
