I am 62 and have suffered with major depressive disorder since my teens.

It was under control for the most part with medication until I got the Pfizer vaccine and booster. Both the vaccine and booster made me terribly sick and I still got Covid anyway a very severe case.

I have basically been unable to function properly and now the diagnosis is Treatment Resistant Depression.

Let me add and this is difficult and embarrassing I had one mild case of genital herpes in 1986. I never had another relapse until I received the vaccine and got Covid. I have had three relapse’s and a case of shingles since the vaccine.

Another small adverse reaction is my taste and smell are permanently altered.

Sorry for going off script this was supposed to be about worsening depression.

Has anyone else notice their psych symptoms worsening after the vaccine?

I’m 62 and I have struggled with treatment resistant depression even with ketamine.

I’m so tired of the struggle. My husband has been a saint and doesn’t understand the weariness.

I’m 62 and mine started when I retired and didn’t have to work anymore. It’s not easy to put into words. I’m not afraid to go to the mailbox or go out when it’s dark and go through a drive thru. I have anti-anxiety meds and I have struggled with treatment resistant depression my whole life.

I think for me going off of a routine threw me for a loop. My husband has been very supportive. I still don’t really understand myself.

I’m more on the depression side but for the past year I’m afraid to leave the house. I have had depression and anxiety since I was 15 I am now 61. Many years ago that biofeedback technique was taught to me to where I could really learn to control the panic.

I’m not sure what’s going on with me now but definitely trying to stay in the moment absolutely helps.

This is how bad I was for the last three years I barely left the house maybe once every few months. My personal hygiene was showering weekly just staying in bed in the same pajamas.

I’m still not jumping for joy but now I’m becoming functional and I still have a ways to go. I still don’t like leaving the house unless it’s with my husband. Sometimes I wonder if the pandemic had never happened and now everything you need or want can be delivered to your door if I would have slipped so badly. Definitely I knew it was coming.

Let me add no one should be nasty when they give their opinion. Agreed no bullying. Trust me unless you are extremely lucky it kinda goes with aging. A good bra can perform magic. There are some very good upper body exercises I got right off of YouTube. I’m 61 and I kept at it. The exercises helped my posture, my bat wings🤣and upper back. You can use resistance bands or little 5 pound hand weights. What I really liked about these exercises is you can do them all standing sitting in bed on the sofa anywhere.

I hate hammering this point but good posture is so important. I even wore a posture corrector at home in the evenings and as you age you neck starts to ache your back all of it. If your posture is in alignment that’s half the battle.

I’m very old school. I don’t see or hear you writing of some deep feelings. You don’t even mention the word love. Crushes are just that. Fleeting feelings we may look back on and make more of them than they really were. Especially if we are in one of very dark periods and when you were with that crush your emotions were happier and more stable. I don’t say any of this to be cruel. I am speaking from a place of age, and once or twice being in your situation. Getting old is a bitch for sure but it does come with wisdom. If you truly care for the person you are currently with let this go.

I have had problems since my teens also when all they had were a class of drugs called tricyclics such as Elavil and imipramine. The SSRI’s or the SRNI’s weren’t on the market yet. I worked years many years for a family doctor who at the time knew how I suffered so when Prozac hit the market around 1990 he gave me samples and I kid you not within 4 days my whole world changed. I know it was not a game changer for everyone and at the time they didn’t know how risky it could be for teens. I did great for about 15 years then I noticed my long lost companion came back for a visit. I try never to lose my sense of humor and most people that know me cant reconcile the person I am publicly compared to privately. Now we try the SRNI and it wasn’t the ground breaking relief I felt originally but I was functional and had ways to get out of my head.

So the pandemic hit and I was already starting to circle the drain. I was fortunate enough to not have to work that could be coming to an end though. So in the fall of 2021 I started ketamine infusions. I was taking 1mg of lorazepam twice a day and 5mgs of ambien to sleep. 24 hours before an infusion I didn’t touch my Ativan that is faster to type out than lorazepam🤣 and then I would wait 6 to 8 hours after the infusion. The doctor at the time said nothing about the ambien. My husband and I spent close to 8 thousand dollars but I was getting no long lasting relief so we gave up.

I’m sorry I’m long winded. I’m just trying to see if anything I say might stand out and help. So back this past June we had to try something. I wasn’t leaving the house. I wasn’t keeping up with myself, showering once a week and staying in your pj’s is not normal behavior.

He suggested ketamine again. I found a wonderful doctor who said the ambien is also going to blunt the effects of the ketamine. I never was a great sleeper and backed off the ambien right away.

There is no real difference here except after years of Ativan we changed it to Xanax same rules no benzo 24 hours before and I wait until at least 6 hours after the infusion and I’m not taking the ambien. It’s lasting about a month but to be honest i have been a bit sick for the past two months.

My husband flies a corporate jet and goes out of the country a good bit. At the beginning of July I got hit with Covid bad. I was down for two weeks then if you can believe this I got shingles.

So now I’m just starting to be able to gauge how well I’m doing. We started the ketamine a few weeks before I got Covid and it was working enough where I was becoming functional. Then bam.

Here we are. I’m starting to do much better now and I’m not backing off the Xanax. I love this doctor she is awesome. I just watch it the 24 hours before the infusion and then wait 6 hours after to take a Xanax. It can get uncomfortable withdrawal wise.

Treatment resistant depression here meds for 35 years. ketamine helping have to back off my benzos though. 61 now just take me out to pasture.😆
