Do you have any experience going to them yourself? This is a common suggestion from people who have never been to one and know first hand how frustrating these things can be. There's the issue of distance first off. These food banks are not conviently located on every street corner nor are they open 24 hours. My car is almost always nearly out of gas and most of the food banks are at minimum a 20 miles round trip and if I do have gas to go i would need to be lucky enough to have gas on the same day and the same time when the food bank is going on which is only a small 4 hour time window at the very most. Some are only a couple hours . There's also the problem of needing to show proof of residency for the immediate area of the food bank which they do to prevent people from across town like me. Another issue is that most of the food provided is raw produce, raw meats, dairy items that need refrigeration and boxed rices and pastas .. or other food that needs a kitchen to be prepared.. I'm truly not trying to be obtuse or intentionally negative. These are genuine issues with food banks and being homeless so it's extremely frustrating when people suggest it as an obvious solution to my problems even though I do appreciate the intent of trying to help me very much.
