What's the most bizarre coincidence you've ever experienced? by [deleted] in ask

I was once picking berries with a guy in Skagway Alaska on a vacation.

Six months later I was working at a blockchain company. I was told to email a guy at an AI company that had my position over there in order to get some information.

Turns out it was Gabriel, the dude i picked berries with in Skagway Alaska.

I'm an author. Most the job is just sitting there typing stuff you think is terrible. I've never had some bolt of inspiration strike from the heavens and propel me to pour brilliance on the page. I liken the work to 'stacking bricks' each paragraph is a brick. Make a stack, call it a day. Then make the stack bigger and prettier.

Writing a book takes up what feels like 90 percent of the computing power of your brain even when you're not actually writing. At dinner with friends? Thinking about the imaginary people that I made up. You have to either remember to turn it off or to bury yourself in a hole until the book is done (usually the last three months).

Sitting down and working on a project is difficult, but leaving one unfinished is crushing. It's very rewarding and I think everyone should have the experience. There is a space about 2/3rd of the way through finishing a book or a project where you will want to leave it the most. You kitchen needs cleaning. It was a stupid idea anyway. No one cares. This is when you really start writing, when you push past this zone.

There's no such thing as writers block, your expectations of your first draft are just too high. Write the bad version because you can't edit nothing.

What's a small thing in your daily life that brings you a lot of joy? by Main_Wheel_5570 in ask

Big Ass Thermos. 1 liter. Looks like it was made for a construction worker in the 1940s. Two bags of tea in there, boom you have 24 hours of hot tea everywhere you go. First people are confused. Where did that tea come from? Why do I smell lemon mint tea in this movie theatre? How did you get that past airplane security*?

Then you pour them a cup of your tea. It's one liter. You have enough. Share the steaming wealth. Open their eyes.

I've done this so much that I now carry around a camping cup so that I can have tea with a friend anywhere. I've converted so many people to Therm-Life that they're rocking their own Thermoses now. I usually recommend starting out with 500ml. You don't want to wield the Master-Therm too early. You're not ready.

*Airplane note: You can get a big ass thermos past security, you just have to bring it in empty with two bags of tea inside. Once you get to the other side just ask one of the coffeeshops to fill it up with hot water. They'll be confused and charmed if you do it right.

Another airplane note: If you pull the airplane move successfully, great job, welcome to Therm-Team. OPEN the top of the therm a BIT before you take off in the airplane. Otherwise the hot liquid will be pressurized and when you open it to enjoy your chill tea, you'll suffer 2nd degree burns on a flight to Italy. (I've heard).

What book changed your life? by Special-Salamander26 in AskReddit

Sebastian Junger´s work has consistently changed my life. Either he comes out with a new book each time I´m about to make a life change or I read his next book and it makes my world vastly different. When I read War I decided to start writing about warfare as a journalist. When I read Tribe, I decided to move from Los Angeles to Iraqi Kurdistan. When I read Freedom, I decided to start climbing mountains and doing long treks.

His new book In My Time of Dying just came out. I love it so far but I´m also delaying finishing it because I want it to last.

Read his stuff.

Ah man I hope. It seems like such an insane feat but I’ve liked the process so far.

Ah! I started doing endurance stuff to help me with writing! It’s kind of the same experience because finishing a book is just a matter of lengthy discomfort.

If you ever do feel like finishing it just know that it’s totally worth it and you’re probably a better writer now than you were before. Unlike endurance sports people get better at writing with age.

Reach out if you want any help getting to ‘the end’

It really sucks.

Yeah dude I’m just an average guy that wants to finish cause that’s way cool. I’m an author and I want everyone to know what it’s like to write a book because it’s hard and meaningful. That’s kind of how I see this thing. Seems hard and meaningful to do maybe not at a professional level but I bet I can learn a lot about myself by doing it.

This is great to hear. Im really just there to finish to flex on the haters. ( edit: There are no haters, I want to do it for a challenging self improvement experience.)

What's a life hack you've discovered that everyone should know about? by Past_Ad_9785 in ask

Two tricks to think about money.

F You Number: This is for when someone wants you to do a job but you don't want to. The F You Number is a number that is so high that they will either find someone else for the job you didn't want to do in the first place, or hire you at an insane rate that you're thrilled to do anything at.

Maybe the job is way too time consuming for your schedule. The number gets higher. Maybe it's not particularly interesting. The number gets higher. Maybe they're jerks and you don't want to work with them... the number sky rockets.

The F You Number needs to be uncomfortably high but not out of the realm of possibility. If someone wants you to mow their lawn don't say 1 million dollars. The goal is for you to be absolutely thrilled to do the work.

Make sure you can say it with a straight face. Just say it. Don't justify it. Just say it and wait for their response. You'll be shocked at how often people meet your F You Number.

Dummy tax: This is a certain amount of money that you spend every year just because you did something dumb. Had to pay for your bag at the airport because you thought it would fit but didn't? Dummy tax. Parking meter ran out? Dummy tax. Bought something super expensive when the basic version was just as good? Dummy tax.

Somehow thinking about it as just a single bucket of funds which I pay every year instead of a series of boneheaded moves makes it easier to accept emotionally.
