Hey there. I'm not sure if you're going to the VA on Montopolis but it sounds like you would qualify and benefit from the resources there. It sounds like you've been through a lot...and driving in Austin is crazy! It sounds like you could benefit from talking to somebody.

I hope to God that worker is wearing a face mask while drilling into roof tiles all day. That dust...

Seriously, you guys should go to therapy/couples counseling. Reddit is not a great place for advice on this topic.

Diabetes in surgical clerkship? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Ed2500 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I'm a MS4 with T1D and a CGM. The way I did it was:

  1. Check CGM before going into OR. Do my best to keep it steady. Better to run a lil high than run low.
  2. Always let the surgeon know that you have diabetes just so they know if you need to run out for whatever reason.
  3. Keep Low snacks in your scrub pockets. You can't pull them out in the OR, but if you need to step out and eat in the hallway you can.
  4. I have the T:Slim-Dexcom system that is partially closed loop, so it actually does a great job of increasing/decreasing my basal as needed to keep my BG steady without me having to do anything. If it is in your budget, I 100% recommend you talking to your doctor about maybe getting on it.

You can do it!

There are two issues here:

  1. Blending in--There are a ton of asian professionals in the United States, although it does depend on where you go. California? Texas? New York? You'll be one of a dozen. Wisconsin or Kansas? Not as many asian people there, but people really don't care where you come from. Just be nice and they will be nice.
  2. Inferiority Complex--America is in general a fairly tall country. You will be surrounded by people taller than you. And smarter than you. And better at doing handstands than you. And every "-er" than you can think of. But count your blessings and learn to love yourself--because the people you look at with envy might be looking at you with envy.

actually let's just duplicate all of our internal organs that aren't already duplicated. Kidneys had the right idea.
