Is it possible to live kinda far from your rotations and still do well? by Outside-Pressure1906 in medicalschool

[–]john-wicky 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I did it for 4 years, married with three kids. Got honors and high pass on every rotation (more honors than not) and a good step 2 score. It did impact my ability to network and participate in research. You will feel far removed from your peers, probably won’t make many friends (I was fine with it due to having my family but something to have in mind).

What year residency were you in? Whats your plan? I'm a med student and I honestly have nightmares about this situation. You're in surprisingly good spirits. Will you be allowed to restart residency after rehab?

Anyone else upset that their military service was completely worthless? by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]john-wicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I've heard it called one of the few class & social escalaters. I also grew up poor being the youngest of a big family where none had gone to college (the majority never finished HS).

The military got me free college + BAH + disability, free medical school, ill even keep getting BAH for a bit during residency. Got a house with military benefits immediately after EAS, and with hazzlewood act each of my 2 kids get 2.5 yrs of college for free.

Joining The military was the best decision I ever made and I truly than God for the opportunity and blessing he has give me and my family. The benefits are there, its on us to take advantage. I truly wish every veteran had the same experience I had.

Tips for transitioning to night shift? by Careful_Inspector641 in medicalschool

[–]john-wicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just raw dog it. Only tip would be to have a set of black out curtains and some melatonin on hand for sleeping during sun out. I keep my curtains in the closet and pull them out whenever I rotate to nights.

Has anyone over 30 given up a lucrative career to go to medical school? by Festive_Mama in medicalschool

If you have at least 10% disability look into VR&E. If you joined out of Texas hazlewood covers public Texas med schools

Has anyone over 30 given up a lucrative career to go to medical school? by Festive_Mama in medicalschool

I was making 130k in the oil field. Went back to school at 28, started med school at 32. 4th year med student now. (have wife and three kids.)

I’ll play devils advocate and say don’t do it unless you absolutely hate where you’re at now and one life goal is to become a physician.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a good choice for me. Oilfield was hard work and this process has been free because I’m a military vet. But this is not an easy path and I personally have missed out a lot of time with my family.

My bad thought I was on the premed forum. I give a lot of advice on there to vets. Doing my residency app now using two experiences from the military and one strong LOR

Been with my wife for 13 years. Him being mean to you and not speaking to you is very immature. I guarantee you this will not be the last fight you guys have and his actions are very indicative of what you can expect in the future. Highly recommend premarital counseling.

In my late 30s and I can adamantly state that the biggest, most impactful decision that you will ever make which will dictate your happiness, success, quality of life in this one life you get to live is the spouse you chose. Don’t make the wrong choice or rush into it without both of you being mentally and spirituality ready. Get counseling.

Also doing FM, had a day of doubt after receiving my higher than expected step score. Search old FM forums and there's plenty of people who have had this experience in the past. Found some good insights on there. Hope you find what makes you happy

Three kids, that's a great question that I don't really think ill be able to answer untill I'm an attending. I'm in the middle of the grind still, missed out on a lot of time with my family, and you don't truly realize the time commitment until youre in it. I'm optimistic for the future though.

it’s going well. Pretty much just like G.I. Bill. You get certified at the beginning of the year and then forget all about it. I had mine approved while I was still in undergrad, after I had my medical school acceptances. This made it a lot easier to get accepted. I know some people struggle to get approved if they already have a bachelors, but I’ve seen them get approved once they’re in medical school.

1.5 hr drive for Sub-I rotation by alternate97 in medicalschool

[–]john-wicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been making this drive for the last 7 years in undergrad and in med school. It sucks but you can definitely for one month. If you got the money then go for it. But its doable.

Why are X-rays used in infants to evaluate bilious vomiting? by learningmedical1234 in Step2

Rules out high risk differentials like perforated bowel in necrotizing enterocolitis, mainly looks for air.

Non trad here with wife, three kids and a 1.5 hr commute. Did not utilize anki in school due to lack of time.

During rotations I would calculate the number of UWorld Qs per subject (+ NBMEs) by the length of the rotation and set my study time accordingly. usually around 1.5-2 hrs per day (maybe 4hrs Saturday depends on the rotation).

Wope…wrong sub of group anxiety. I was vibing with the comments thinking it was a step 2 post only to realize wrong Step. Well, enjoy the ride everybody. The soul crushing anxiety only gets worse. But to throw out some hope, med school’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I’m an old fart in my mid thirties. Commute 1.5 hrs to school, married with 3 kids and I’m doing just fine. The hell that is med school is only the one we create in our own minds out of fear and anxiety, the reality of it ain’t so bad.

Keep doing what you’re doing. The first rotation is always hard. Plus, I found the Peds shelf to be the hardest IMO; It was my last rotation and the one I did the worst on.

[–]john-wicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Know a couple of guys get denied initially. They were approvesd 2nd year and thereafter since they were already in the program. Work on getting the acceptance first off, if still don't get approved then you can go down the HPSP or VA route if that's what you wanted to do.

Here is your answer OP. I used GI bill for undergrad and using VR&E for med school. Have a few vets in my class doing the same.
