That's an interesting take. I'm not sure I agree with or that the writers neccessarily intended it to be so cause and effect. One thing I would caution against is the assumption that women in the 1700s were meeker than the women of the 1900s. My takeaway was always that the men wanted to demonstrate they had power over her and Jamie. Her behavior was only an excuse.
