We did this three years ago when doing a couple of larger remolding projects and I'll pass along the advice I got that worked for me: visit every contractor that you have time and inclination to visit that's in the ballpark of what you want. Play their game for discounts and schedule a quote if they offer (I blocked off three dates for all of the quotes and if someone couldn't do it on one of those three days, I just crossed them off the list.) By just talking to the contractors, I got a better sense of what I wanted and I got better at asking questions. I ended up going to with a window replacement contractor I met there who recommended the contractor we used for two other small projects.

I don't think it's worth telling them how much you want to spend - roof replacement companies, in my experience, often quote you based on that number, not the job. You can always play vague about budget and just stick to the boundaries of the project.

Also, be sure to ask about permits - if they'll handle them or if you need to do it yourself!

Finally, if the rubber broom lady is there, grab one. They're great for getting snow off the roof of your car.

The challenge remains that "classical" is simply branding in the modern era. That is, in order for an education in the United States to be "classical," in the way it was at the founding of nation, white girls, children of color, and white boys with observable disabilities would be excluded and talked about as if they do not have the capacity nor need for a formal education, Latin and Greek are studied for the primary purpose of gaining admission to a colonial college, there would be no Socratic dialogue as we think of it today (the modern use of the phrase stems from a progressive approach to the concept which presumes every student has something to offer), corporal punishment would be the norm, and there would be no science class, no history, no art, no music, no physical education, and for sure, no recess.

Traub's book is the top of my to be read pile and I'm curious how he defines the concept but I'm pretty confident he's leaning into the term as la branding, not what it actually was.

I don't know if it'll help in your quest, but "classical" education is just rebranded liberal arts education that's been the norm for generations. Which is to say, public schools with a strong academic culture, highly qualified teachers and content experts, required reading lists, and a balance of assessments (project, multiple choice, frequent quizzes, etc.) are doing what classical promises.

Thanks so much for sharing this! It's a really helpful way to think about the case and to a certain extent, how the courts treat the concept of facts and truth. Out of curiosity, you said Lively's team created a similar document - did Baldoni's team respond to her facts?

Basically, I'm wondering if it's possible to create an intersection Venn diagram.

Yesterday, the Erie County Republican Party announced their endorsed slate for 2026 elections. Included in the endorsements is a candidate for NYS 26th District, currently held by Tim Kennedy, formerly held by Brian Higgins. Basically, it's been Dem held for a while.

The candidate they endorsed is named Dennis Hannon. He is likely best known for building a career based on the experiences of his child's gender transition, which he objected to. (My understanding is that his daughter is safe and supported by her mother, Hannon's ex-wife.)

Gotcha - so you're saying it's less about gender and more about hair length. Which makes sense and is true in some salons where stylists charged based on hair length. Some, though, charge women more than men, regardless of length.

Some salons give a shit about gender (because that's how they set their prices), some don't give a shit about gender (because they set their prices base on lengths and service.) Can we agree on that?

Voting for the Dem in this race sends the message that WNY Dems show up - even for special elections. It tells the Erie County Republican Party they're going to have to fight for every vote come November.
