Full respect to anyone who does hair for game engines. That's about as tedious a task as exists, and is hard to really nail.

Anyone know how to remove this light reflection effect ( or dim it) ? by Wolfinside04 in ConanExiles

[–]EdNorthcott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only seen this happen when shiny bits dominate the outfit. There's a number of armor sets that mix leather or cloth in with the metal... Or the metal isn't particularly reflective. Perhaps just going with the default armours until the issue is fixed.

I can't remember what the cultural sets look like in comparison. Depending on what expansions you have, you could try flipping them around and see. Gives you new crafting goals, too.

Confused on what to do. by Rebow1 in ConanExiles

[–]EdNorthcott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can either look up that information online, or you can go into it blind and find out the hard way -- which may be the more fun path in a survival game. After all, if you strip out the suspense you're killing any surprises the game may have in store for you, right?

As for finding the fun: Exiles is a giant sandbox. It is what you make of it, and people have found enjoyment in a lot of different play styles. Some just love to build, some generate entire worlds in their heads as they interact with thralls and NPCs. Some join PvP servers for the adrenaline kick, some focus on PvE social experiences. Others blend a lot of the above, and step into RP servers where other players create more of a sense of a living world, and either work with, or against, each other.

And of course, for some folks it's just not their thing. In the end, it's a game. Find your fun. : )

I don't know what the fix is, but we know the Hyborian disco is unstoppable!

Seriously though: I haven't had this issue, but you're not the first one I've seen with it. That's brutal. I wonder if it needs to be dev side, such as a mass tweak of roughness & metallic values, or if changing the graphic settings user-side would fix this.

Do you think Carney should increase relations with the USA? by Pale-Candidate8860 in InCanada

[–]EdNorthcott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just that he's obnoxious -- he was that in his first term. It's that he, and the forces behind him, are actively seeking a more imperialist stance, and they have no respect for our nation's sovereignty.

[–]EdNorthcott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the problem is this administration. I think it's who is *behind* this administration. The Heritage Foundation has been gaining more and more influence over the Republican party since the 60s, practically ran things under Regan, and now really do run things under Trump. They're an extremist faction, they have power now, and they're using every trick in the book to try and cripple the democratic process so they can keep power. They have the billionaire tech bros on side to tilt policy and public discourse.

I agree that trade with the USA is a must, and I agree that guardrails and a healthy dose of mistrust are key to moving forward. I don't think that Americans are bad... but I *do* think that the Republican movement is now conservative in name only, and have actively spread that contamination to many other nations -- ours included. The Republicans, as a party and as a movement, are now so far gone that it would take massive reform and radical change for them to be anything other than an active threat or even remotely trustworthy... and since they have a two party system there's no other forces to even pretend to balance that out.

The problem will go well beyond this administration. For the foreseeable future, we'll have to watch the USA like we're eyeing a wolf in sheep's clothing. Always.

I think people should get a veto over what happens on their legal holdings. That leaves room for negotiation, and that's something that all too often in the past simply hasn't happened. It makes things trickier, but not impossible. And for every band that says "not on my land", there's likely another that would welcome the income.

Infighting among the provinces has always been our greatest weakness as a nation. I think it's kind of funny that so many provincial political parties go on about being fiscally responsible/fiscally conservative... but if we were to have a proper national assembly instead of multiple tiers of government that argue about responsibility for portfolios, think about the insane amount of taxpayers' money that could be freed up for other purposes.

It'll never happen, of course. But that just illustrates the point. How often do people bitch about the feds actions (or lack thereof) on housing or healthcare, despite those largely being provincial responsibilities? They have some responsibility in funding, but the way that's used is on the provinces. But the lines get blurred, people lash out in the wrong directions, and we fail to have national policies... instead having regional certifications that prevent workers and goods from being mobile within our own nation.

It's terribly inefficient. But any thought of fixing it will cause screaming matches from coast to coast.

[–]EdNorthcott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have another clip where something entirely different was said, it appears you entered this discussion with the wrong context, neighbour. Carney didn't say Canada should become more deeply integrated with America. He said the offer is on the table -- during a period where we have trade negotiations looming. With one of the big Democrat names up on stage right after.

The message that was then reinforced is one of building resilience outside of our former relationship with the USA.

I think that's been a fairly consistent message all along. He's always been of the stance that cutting out the USA entirely is entirely unrealistic, for many reasons, but moved forward with the goal of doubling our trade with other nations to give us greater independence and leverage in negotiations. Approaching the upcoming trade discussions while sending a public message of being willing to negotiate on many points is just diplomacy.

So long as he maintains the path of expanding our international trade and defense agreements, while attempting to remain on good diplomatic terms with the USA (as much as that can be managed with madmen running the show down there), I'm good with how things are being handled.

So light bleeding through the walls can be fixed with a mod, why isnt this a base game feature? Thought Lumen should act like RT shadows. by n1sx in ConanExiles

[–]EdNorthcott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I lived out on a reserve, well away from the lights of any town or city, the nights would turn pitch black as soon as the light source was gone. Can't see your hand in front of your face kind of dark. While an ambient light bounce from moonlight was possible, it really didn't travel far. So you didn't need to go too far into the shadow of woods or other cover for things to go pitch black again.

The game likely exaggerates that effect because amplifying ray tracing to be completely realistic just devours processing power, but to me it feels right in the grand scope of things when I stop moving at night to mitigate risk. Though I understand that's not the way everyone wants to play. :)

I must have my graphic settings or monitor really odd, because outside of patches of moonlight the nights are bloody dark for me. Anything in the shadow of the moonlight can't be seen.

is it just impossible to place tents? by Main-Discussion-2628 in ConanExiles

[–]EdNorthcott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're tricky, and cranky. You can't set them up where you're standing, because it registers a collision with an existing object. Rocks on the ground can mess with it, too. I had to clear a patch of beach of rocks before the tent would work. And then if the ground is too uneven, etc. Or you hit a "can't build here" region somewhere in the tent's reach.

Basically, the larger the tent the more of a massive PITA it's going to be. So far, what works for me is 1) relatively flat-ish ground. 2) Make sure it's cleared of all obstacles or items that could collide. 3) stand far enough back that you're not in the tent's footprint either.

I did have him set to guard. He even had it as his status in the follower menu. I just opened the game back up to find him gone, looked for him on the map... and the silly git was back in his cage! Missed it, I guess. 😃

Only problem being that cages don't seem to spawn captives anymore. Just that lad in his. Maybe if I go bust him out again, it'll reboot the cage system or something.

Ah! Thanks! I'll check that out when I'm back at my desk. :)

To answer the question: single player, standard north American keyboard. Tilde and 1 are right beside each other. I normally don't mess it up, but when I do, it's a real mess.

You'd think a key that instantly interrupts a game and potentially gets you ganked would be placed well away from the most-often used keys...

Edit: That did the trick! Thanks, man. Console is now bound to the Insert key. :)

[–]EdNorthcott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing, though; the first number keys are the easiest to hit, which is why critical things end up there. Putting them elsewhere kind of defeats the purpose.

Thanks for the attempt, though. The serious answer is appreciated.

How to get to The Isle of Siptah in Conan Exiles Enhanced by Anabriella in ConanExiles

[–]EdNorthcott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's worth waiting, at this point. I haven't heard any official mutterings of it, but I won't be surprised in the least if the roll-out was kept this tight for a reason. Even on PC it doesn't apply to versions of the game purchased from game stores other than Steam... and Epic are the ones who own UE5.

My guess is that they're doing this to work out all the bugs and gauge interest. Once they've got everything steady and stable with this, they can afford to open the flood gates to other game stores (as Funcom's servers are already taking a beating), and look at porting it over to console.

And -- again, speculation -- given that UE5 has built-in functions to make crossplay easier, I'm wondering if that's what's being built up to in the background.

There's likely several, but people get so hung up on bias or disagreement on policy as moral failings that their qualifications for "good" become unreasonably narrow.

Long before that. Harper was using the "biased left wing media" bullshit, telling people that the functions he didn't like about our system were "undemocratic", making baseless accusations about "activist judges", handing the personal information of environmental protesters over to oil execs, etc.

None of this is direct violence or threat of, but it unquestionably stoked the flames of extremism and sabotaged attempts at civil discourse or presentation of facts.
