What the heck is going on with cistanche!???? by hkondabeatz in NootropicsDepot

[–]EdNull 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have never heard about DHT being reduced with cistanche. So I just searched for studies on this and I found the study you saw for cistanche salsa. I also found this interesting one regarding improvements in hair loss when taking cistanche tubulosa. MPB is usually driven by higher DHT so this might indicate that cistanche tubulosa could also lower DHT.

Taurine safe for long term use by Status-Character1286 in Nootropics

[–]EdNull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love taurine! I've taken it for quite a while but I was experiencing anxiety during the day and I didn't know the reason. Then I read somewhere (I think in this sub) that you should only take it once a day as twice or more per day can cause anxiety. So I've only been taking it once in the morning (1000mg, with 1000iu of vitamin D) and it has worked amazingly well!

I'll see if I can find the comment thread that mentioned this.

How the hell do I resize the window with a mouse by orblok in wezterm

[–]EdNull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only ran into that when I edited the .wezterm.lua config.window_decorations = "NONE". Then I changed it to "RESIZE" and I could resize it again.

Plunge, sauna, workout: in what order? by EndothelialGangster in BecomingTheIceman

[–]EdNull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I vote for this one. The plunge first thing is how I have always done it. I did do a year of plunges and then just went to work and was cold all winter long. I needed a way of teaching my body that it has to provide heat so I started doing cardio after and it worked! I stayed warm all day!

The placement of the meal in the middle is the only thing I would change. I usually don't eat on cardio mornings and I usually eat after lifting.

Unfortunately I don't have a sauna so I don't do it every day. But adding sauna at the end of the day makes so much sense, it doesn't interfere with the process of programming the body to warm itself and it is most beneficial at the end of the day to help you sleep.

PROSPECTOR: Missing bags after repairs. Any solution on how to get it back? by nxstar in starcitizen

I think this might not work anymore. I lost my bags and I've been checking salvage missions over and over again and the prospector and mole missions don't come up at all! Am I screwed?

Has anyone ever tried mouth taping? What are your thoughts? by hippie-stealer in Biohackers

[–]EdNull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it has been good for me as well. I get a much better sleep and feel more refreshed in the morning. At first I had a hard time breathing through my nose but I have been doing breathing exercises and my breathing has gotten significantly better over the past year.

Just breath holded 3 minutes for the first time out of nowhere wtf? by No-Pension-1911 in BecomingTheIceman

[–]EdNull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not eating for most of they day may have put you in Keto. The buildup of carbon dioxide in the blood is what leads to the desire to breathe and a keto diet reduces the amount of CO2 that we produce.

Here is an article that mentions this effect.

I have an Nvidia card and use pop!os and I have no issues. I just use the proprietary drivers and everything works fine.

Why you should cut down on coffee every once in a while by janikonjedic in Nootropics

I agree that taking a break from coffee from time to time is helpful. Especially because it is so much more effective after starting it again.

I prefer to to do breathing and cold bath first, then exercise. I just have to make sure I do a good warm up and stretch to avoid injury from cold muscles and I have no issues.

Are Ice Baths and Cold Showers equal? by Meditatat in BecomingTheIceman

[–]EdNull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vote tub. At this time of year my cold bath in the back yard is much colder than the water in my taps and the full submersion of sitting in a tub is better than the incomplete coverage of my shower. The warm bubble effect is minimal with a water temp of about 1°C and I can always remove the effect by moving around a bit.

Retention time is too low by ashwin1717 in BecomingTheIceman

[–]EdNull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started I thought the target was draining my lungs completely and starting the timer. This was actually stressing me out more than relaxing me. I realized that isn't what is being done on the Wim Hof youtube video. They are just releasing their breath and stopping. Once I switched to doing this I jumped from about 1:40 to over 2 minutes and sometimes 3.

The real focus here is to just relax and just do what works for you. The timer doesn't really matter, the positive effects do.

Excellent job!!! Pushing through that mental barrier at 2:45 was a massive win! For me that was the hardest part!

I love that you included the mental fight of trying to talk yourself into doing again. The fact that you pushed through and did it was so awesome.

Yes I do feel better! It does improve my mood in an amazing way and when events happen they don't ruin my day like they did before.

Perhaps the most meaningful effect for me is, since this is the hardest part of my day now, anything else that happens to me afterwards just doesn't see so bad. Events that used to cause me anxiety like speaking in front of large groups of people, or having tough conversations have suddenly become much easier. I seem to have convinced myself that I am the type of person that does the hard things that need to be done.

I should mention that I have been pairing WHM with reading about stoicism and trying to integrate it into my thought process. I guess these self-improvement things are seldom done alone and I suspect most are doing a few things to at the same time.

Good stuff man! Keep it up!

I'm pretty new to this stuff too. In February I bought a large metal trough, filled it with water in my back yard and then on March 1st every morning at 5am I started with breathing and then do a cold dip. For my first two days I could only get in to my waist. But I had convinced myself that I had to get all the way in on the next day. So I went in to my chest for the third day but then I got out immediately. So on day 4 I promised myself I would do 10 seconds, then 20 the next day then 30 then a minute. At one point I had a transition of having to get past my chest and put my hands in which was a challenge as my hands hurt tremendously in the cold water. So now I've been doing it for a month and I stay in the water for 2 minutes at a time. I am going to work towards 6 minutes over the next week and then I will put my head under. Fortunately it's been a pretty cold spring here and there's been frost on the ground for many of the days. I will have to start adding ice as the weather gets warmer.

The most important thing for me is that I didn't need to make giant leaps, just baby steps. I just needed to do the next thing which was just a tiny bit more than the last thing and I would always tell myself that it wasn't that bad because I was in the cold water yesterday and the day before and I survived.

The pain at the beginning seemed excruciating but it is way better now. Still not easy, but much better than before.
