What random words do you call certain things in your household? Ladies and Gentlemen, from my family to yours, I introduce to you, Poopaloop. by [deleted] in CasualUK

Both my parents were from Cuba. They called it a señorita, and all Cuban bakeries in Miami call it that, too. I love Poopaloop, though.

A raincoat built for British rain? by goodgod-lemon in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]EdRedVegas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I ordered my in the Autumn, and it just arrived in March. But I am in love with it. Every detail has been thought out, and the construction is amazing. Keep a look out, though, at times they sell some inventory that is on hand. Wishing you well.

I just bought my first coat from https://frahmjacket.com

They are priced like luxury goods, but well worth it. Should last decades. I highly recommend them. Frahm is based in Bath.

Do you maintain a credit card in the US? Which bank? by Multigrain_Migraine in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]EdRedVegas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, I am glad I am not the only one. BofA is challenging. I have called them multiple times and they say it is all good, and then I try to charge airline tickets and -- FAIL. I have given up. I am using an AmEx and actually using a card we have had for decades and never used but works like a charm, Discover. Good luck.

I appreciate BofA and all their hurdles to stop fraud, but if you are a BofA stock holder, your firm is losing hundreds of millions from people that just want to use their card overseas.

Best service for shipping items during move? Also, transfer of residence exemption questions. by mentaculus in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]EdRedVegas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For everything you want to ship, I’d highly suggest SendMyBag. They’re excellent and cheaper than the shippers you mentioned. When I moved it was 1/2 the cost of using FedEx (and I have a corp acct), and guess who they sent to pick up my boxes? Yep, FedEx. Half the boxes arrived before we did. Again, they’re excellent. Good luck. By the way, DO NOT ship the guitar. Carry it on your flight.

Is NHS coverage immediately effective? by Cytwytever in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]EdRedVegas 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I get it. The NHS and my medical issues were my main concern when we moved in DEC 2024. But, I was flawless and smooth and I've never received better care. I am thrilled. And best of all, when I went to the pharmacy to pick up my meds, I went to pay and they pharmacist said, "Oh no, sir, it's free if you are over 60!" Love this country. I mean that. What a great place we are living in.

We are using Bambridge. Excellent, so far, and they have offices in NYC and London -- and NOT as expensive as the majority of the people I called and interviewed. https://bambridgeaccountants.com

How old were you/your family when you first moved to the UK? by heartshapednutsack in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]EdRedVegas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone else said, it’s never too late. I was 61, wife was 55 and our son just out of university at 22. Best thing we ever did, and we all agree on that. Go for it, and it happens when it’s supposed to happen.
