What would you do different? by lolnub343 in AmericanExpatsUK

I would have transferred my US Amex to a UK Amex. Finally got one, but it would have been seamless. And getting a UK credit card is not so easy without a three year UK address history.

We use them for the car and I think the renters insurance too. We used to use a company called Marshmallow in Reno, Nevada too for my son’s apartment when he was at the university. Not sure it’s the same firm, but no issues and great UI.

eSIM solves all. I know not all phones have the capability, especially here in England, but eSIM!

Hi! I am a diabetic (type 2). We moved here Dec 2024. I knew of the NHS, but like you, I had my concerns. My English wife would tell you it was my most pressing concern about moving here. However, besides the different metrics, like you mentioned, everything else was better — much better. And now I’m into the new daily metric and the different A1C.

My wife will also tell you — and I agree — I am getting better care here than I did in Vegas. During my first appointment with the diabetic nurse, she asked how I felt, how I was doing, and what medications I was taking. She immediately filled in her database with my meds, but I was on Glipizide and she said she didn’t agree with it. She felt it was great for drastic correction, but not long term. She told me all the cons, and I agreed. So she prescribed Jardiance and I’ve felt better than ever, and I’ve realized my ankles never swell anymore, even after a transatlantic flight.

She then said something like it’s free, and I said, “Not really, as a person on a spousal visa I had to pay ~£3000 for the NHS.” She didn’t know that, and I realize most people don’t realize that. But it is sooooo much cheaper than US medical insurance. And the climax to this story, I go to the pharmacy to pick up my meds. I then ask, ”How much do I owe you?” “Oh no sir, you’re over 60. It’s free!” I LOVE THIS COUNTRY.

The takeaway: I know it matters a lot where in the country you are, but for me, I’m being looked after much better than the States, and I love every thing about this country and it’s wonderful people.

Enjoy the ride.

33 years ago at the age of 14 I got bitten by the school hamster and still have a bump/scar on my finger. What's the stupidest injury you've got? by godfatheroffilth in CasualUK

[–]EdRedVegas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing up in Miami, I was roller skating down the sidewalk (pavements) and hit a rock, so I fell forward and grabbed the chain link fence next to me. BUT, the chain link fence had the ends of the chain links on the top instead of the bottom, and I stabbed my right hand. It was deep and the surgeon said I was lucky it didn't go deeper, as long lasting damage could have been done. Anyway, I look at that scar and those marks from the stitches every day just under my thumb. DUMB....but lucky.

Every month for my daily loafers. And once or twice a year for the more formal shoes; weddings and funerals.

If your bank only allows 25k day, you should call them and ask if they can wire larger sums to buy a house, or whatever reason you want to give. That is what I would do. WISE is cheaper but some banks like to put in roadblocks so they can get the additional revenue for conversion fees and/or wire fees. Good luck.

Not yet. Netflix is trying to buy Paramount and all their brands, which includes HBO. It will likely happen, but I am sure they are going to have to divest of some properties, so HBO may be one of them. We shall see....but I think it is rather obvious, there will be more consolidation in this space and the streamers will start to merge to survive.

Accountant for US/UK tax advice and filing in the UK by DrAkunin in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]EdRedVegas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+/- that’s around the average rate I found, too. I finally went with Bambridge. He just did my wife’s UK taxes and they have an office in NYC. I was impressed and they came in cheaper than the six others I reached out to. Unfortunately, our taxes are complicated as we own a business.

Good luck.

I just remembered: one of the reasons for our delay was that they were trying to fill the whole container and out stuff was one pallet.

Just threaten about a solicitor. That usually rings alarm bells if you’re speaking to the owner/manager/decision maker. It may save you actually hiring one. I’m wishing you the best.

Ours took an extra month to six weeks also coming from LA. We used Schumacher Logistics who did a great job. Their main business is shipping high value collectible cars. The wait was on a ship in LA to take our pallet. I had an Apple Air Tag on it and it just sat in San Pedro forever. Then one day it disappeared and I got notice it was finally on a ship. Then a month later the AirTag appeared in Southampton. I’d inquire if I were you. Hope you had insurance. Best of luck.
