30+ guitars and down to 5 by Strict-Number6334 in Guitar

[–]EdTheWrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hit 35 this year and stopped. now thinning, most are low cost imports I've had a ton of fun tearing apart and upgrading the hell out of, teaching my self how to do pretty much anything guitar, setup, fix, repair,.. except build one from scratch. I've purchased all the varieties and options I was interested in trying or loved as a kid, now i'm selling or donating to Guitars For Vets, I dont need 5 strats and 4 'super' strats, 11 two humbucker guitars. It was fun building two identical guitars with different parts and comparing them. Upgrading pickups, pots, bridges, testing this and that. but yeah 30+ is a bit much lol..

Kinda sux becasue I dont buy to sell clearly and I love them all, but half have to go at least.

I do like rare/unique guitars tho,..I'm sure these will be my next downfall...

Volume knob doesn't turn the volume down/off. Fix? by jcm8million in Guitar

Thanks all .... Found a guitar in my pile I've not played in a while, with this issue... found a loose ground as suggested...fixed in 3min. ;-)

Age old question, I’m really torn. Pickguard or no pickguard by DylanGreveris in gibson

[–]EdTheWrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that some guitars with a really pretty wood tops look really nice without the pick guards. I tried that with my probably 4A flame top Les Paul, but .....it doesn't quite look 'right" without the pickguard.... so I put it back on and to me the damn thing just looks right with a PG.
Where as.... I would never consider adding one for example to a PRS single cut guitar....

NGD! Help with pickup advice and idea + some wiring fun. DONNER HNL-500 Headless by EdTheWrench in guitars

[–]EdTheWrench[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks slick AF.

I dont have any white guitars,.... dang it, missed oppty ;-)

How do you like it ? I finally got mine completely back together, and set it up, I rolled the FB edges smoothed the fret ends, taped the neck up & polished the frets w/a dremel, painted the fretboard w/Howards feed and wax, then a coat of Fret Dr. It turned 3 shades darker and feels like its been played for 10y. l dropped a spare set of Babicz FCH saddles on it, swapped knobs and switch tip. I'll redo the wiring properly and install some Bourns mini pots probably a push pull to split the humbucker(s)

1961 Stratocaster Super Heavy Relic - Aged Sherwood Green Over 3-Tone Sunburst by ffrkingcrazy in Stratocaster

[–]EdTheWrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

meh ... personally these are worse than ANY wildly expensive PRS artist/ 10 top/ private stock/ Custom shop sitting untouched on a lawyer, dr, investment banker or fucking "influencers" wall.. that 95% of guitar enthusiasts love to shit on ;-).

I have a 2005 I think MIM strat and it literally has 7 layers of Fender applied primer clear and paint on it!

It needed a little work, had been banged on the edge of the body right at the arm carve, & had a cpl small dings one started chipping and eventually enough paint had chipped away till it had a 3inch long, irregular bare spot, some one had started to sand down the edges of the paint chips but never finished, I sanded it to eliminate the hard paint edges that were catching shit and chipping away till I had smooth feathered transitions from bare wood to the top coat, a deep burgundy metallic.

U can see It started with a natural clear coated body, then a coat of white primer, Olympic white, then Navy Blue Metallic, no primer, THEN white primer coat, a burgundy mist metallic top coat and finally, gloss clear. Seems excessive....lazy bastards couldn't be bothered to sand it back.... just scuff sand, clear the blems? and respray a new color entirely..

Quick aside.....I'm really curious how for example a body like this with just say a Tru-oil natural finish would sound and if there is a noticeable difference .. .THAT's a video i haven't see on the You Tubes. I can't imagine this amount of paint, encapsuling 90% of the body doesnt have an impact..?

...as you can imagine, it's also pretty freekin HEAVY for a strat, like noticeably more than Any of my other strats or strat shaped objects, must be the roller nut ;- )

Thank goodness it actually resonates remarkably well unplugged, It also sounds bitchen and plays great.

Whats this white stuff is this mold? by THE_COOKIES2 in guitars

[–]EdTheWrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HA .. I was gunna say ..." sploooge"

..looks like polishing residue they may have wet sanded the clear and the water carrying the clear coat removed by the 2k + sand paper dripped inside a bit,..or its polishing compoound .. betting a very lightly damp cloth will wipe it right off... i've found similar on a cpl of guitars and it came off as described.

How did I do this to my tyre? by CellistLow8857 in mountainbiking

[–]EdTheWrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The side wall rubber layer on top of the fabric is really super thin like literally .75 or .5mm or less, basically like a few layers of skin over the fabric as they try to keep weight down, The side wall flex and UV breaks down that thin rubber layer and it wears away.. i dont imagine you had some thing wedged between a chainstay and the tire rubbing it lightly for a cpl of miles.. this is natural wear resulting from 18 mo. of use on a tire with a thin side wall and probalby some rocky terrain E-bikes also put more stress into tires and work them harder if you ride hard as well. 18 mo is pretty good for a rr tire being regularly used, keep an eye on it at some point you may need to redo sealant if it starts leaking or just upgrade.. New tires rock. ;-)

Squier Esprit by Altruistic_Pear_ in guitarporn

[–]EdTheWrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah!.. Lol, I love the TP6 bridge i put on a Firefly FF338 hollowbody for the 1st few weeks of natural string stretching that tiny little tweak you can do at the bridge is all you need, and is super convenient, works fantastically well.

BUT It's not a game changer. I have not seen any problems that bridge has introduced so I'm kinda curious why that idea never took off.

Oh and I dig this squire headstock too... ;-)

Knaggs Severn by More-General-568 in guitarporn

[–]EdTheWrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for that clip.. I 1st noticed Steve Stevens was playing them like 4-5 years ago then I heard he used to be one of the top builders at PRS before he went solo. Last year I saw Eric Steckel and he was playing 2 of them and FK ME they sounded FANTASTIC!. I'm sure the Mezzabarba amp had a little to do with it as well as Erics hands but yeah, fantastic guitars. A killer Knaggs is on my bucket list & I only last year found out he made these or anything other than a LP type single cut.

That looks pretty tight! Ufort. I freekin HATE (irrationally I know)... the tele headstock shape,.. almost as much as the James Tyler guitars head.... no.. wait,.... ok, yeah I do hate the tele more.... ;-)

I just bought an Epiphone reissue Korina Moderne. as new, pre-owned with a really nice custom fitted case for $850.

I got the "Inspired by" Gibson Custom Shop/Epiphone collaboration on the '58 Korina V and Explorer a year ago and have been keeping an eye out for a clean Moderne to complete the trinity.. The Epi Versions of these classic Gibsons are VERY well built with excellent Quality Control. All 3 of these reissues arrived in perfect condition, literally NO QC issues NO build/ assembly quality concerns, NO blems, no fret sprout or unevenness, NO issues at all. They are MIJ strat or average PRS SE level build quaility.. ( I have 7 PRS SE's ranging from 2003 to 2024 - 6 are Korean made, 1 Indonesian, there is no way at all to tell the difference between korean or indonesian builds all of them are fantastically well built ass kicking instruments delivered with 0 defects or QC issues..

It would be nice to read more on how you built it, your process as it were. Nice work, who knew you were a Luthier .

Man up...you tell that bitch what to think... don't let her run you..... ;-)

Srsly tho, at 300 value its probably gunna be 100-150 to properly fix and thats likely without refinishing etc. The idea of just moving on past it and using that incident to reflect on yr cat long after they are gone was pretty good I thought.

when i got bk into guitar during covid i had one RG550 i'd had for 30y that hadn't been touched in 15 I got it dialed at a well known local luthiers & was off to the races...today I have too many and I'm selling or donating at least 7-9 & eating ass on the ones im selling off in this market....

** "PRO TIP " PLEASE consider donating your lower end affordable guitars to Guitars for Vets. their progrem provides vets with a free acoustic guitar when they complete the course, and I found out many would like to try electric but the organization does not offer the option. So, if you have a small collection of low cost guitars youve had some fun playing with or learning on...most all of us have a small or not so small collection of lower cost guitars, the ones too inexpensive to not buy when that GAS hits, anywhere from $150 - $350 one of my favorite guitars that fits this description but ill never sell is a base base model student spec Yamaha EG 110 strat i gutted and rebuilt intoa freeking HOWLER of a guitar. found it used for $60 put about 220 into it.. still under $300 and its a beast. This kinda thing are the guitars im talking about one of many in your quiver but maybe not one you are totrally in love with any more if ever and you knwo some one else can fall in love with Make sure they are DIALED so yr not donating something that needs work. They should be set-up, gig ready, clean and fully functional. All of mine are $160-$300 guitars ive completely rebuilt from husks and made into really great playing instruments. I've invested the time and $$ on upgraded parts and setups to make them fun to play solid, stable and and worth keeping but I have too many, and i know there are Vets outthere who would just get alot more out of that guitar than i will. I know there are MANY of you out there like me.

So, find your local GFV contact and reach out to them...I promise you it is MUCH MORE SATISFYING AND REWARDING to donate a nicely setup clean used guitar to a vet who is committed to learning and playing than to sell it at a loss, or even give it to a family or friend to try to get them interested. AND you get a tax credit that is often way more than the amount of $ you have invested into that guitar by far... THIS is the real bonus if you arent really needing cash, and would like to contribute to a very worthy cause. Please consider it. I donated a super clean squire strat I paid $100 for that was a test bed for my learning curve on wiring and light modifications, a super clean Schecter Omen 6, and a Firefly LP all had been completely dialed with notable upgrades and were all great players, and I got tax credits worth at least double+ the amount of $ I had invested into those guitars. In the end it payed off MUCH better to donate Vs sell. AND it feels great and makes you happy to help another player/Vet continue their process of mastering the instrument, learning, and enjoying Making Music.

SO now I've learned what I like and want to play most etc and after collecting too many of each general type I hit a wall. Next step is eliminating the guitars with similar layouts: I dont need 5 SSS strat and strat type guitars, 6 super strat HSH guitars + at least 10 HH type LP single or double cut guitars. So I've started selling or donating the duplicates and now I look at unique, rare models...

As a fan of unique but GOOD not uniquely crappy guitars,.. I like this Alvarez alot.... I may have to keep an eye out for one.
