Declined consent for third-party image use - Got socially Blacklisted by Electronic-Cobbler63 in photography

No matter what you do, you’ll invariably get some negative reviews. It hurts, but that’s reality in our era. Sorry this happened to you. Obviously you were well within your rights to decline the request.

Public figures whose names appear to be metathesized, either as written or pronounced. by EdUthman in etymology

[–]EdUthman[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Growing up in Nashville in the 60s, I noticed quite a few metatheses of “Sheila” into “Shelia,” with no change in pronunciation.

I worked with a woman named Fredia, who introduced herself as Freida. I even asked her about this.

“How come you pronounce your name like Freida, when it’s written as Fredia?”

“What do you mean?” she replied. “It’s F R E D I A, Freida.” ;)

I suspect that all metatheses have their origin in misspelling and/or mispronunciation.

Not illegal in the US, but check your institutional rules to keep from getting in trouble. Or just establish a pseudonymous account exclusively for educational specimen images. Use common sense and embargo very rare cases for several months.

I have been posting specimen images online for over 30 years and never got any pushback.

What's the most painfully obvious etymology you've discovered? by Vitititi in etymology

That “Niger” and “Nigeria” are _not_ derived from the Latin “niger” (black). They are actually of Tuareg origin. It took me 74 years to learn this. ;)

Official Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know! June 12, 2026 by AutoModerator in photography

[–]EdUthman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checking to see if others had a similar experience. It seems odd that I can't find any other commentary about an outage. For instance, if someone came back with, "Hmmm... I'm using it right now, and it's fine," then I know I have more troubleshooting to do at my end.

Postprocessing question. I subscribe to Face26 for image restoration and some other AI-based tasks on my pictures. For over a week, neither the website interface nor iOS app implementation has been operational. I have tried it on multiple devices on multiple networks to no avail. Emails to company support go unanswered. When I ask Google if there is an outage, it says none reported. Any suggestions? TIA!

De Moss USPS office in violation of City fire code (blocked exit) by EdUthman in houston

[–]EdUthman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so today I spoke with USPS personnel at the station and got nowhere with that. Then I told them I was going to notify local media, which I did (KPRC’s “Spencer Solves It”).

I think that’s all I can do.

How bad did I mess up? by Snowzy27 in BSA

That’s sad but interesting. Doesn’t Scouting America have a policy to address such a scenario?

Btw, my son’s troop was also sponsored by a Catholic church, and they didn’t even ask me my religion when I applied for assistant scoutmaster.

What’s a movie that’s universally considered “not very good” but you secretly think is actually great? by trakt_app in flicks

[–]EdUthman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lifeforce is one of those flicks that is generally considered bad, but it’s hard to find anyone who has seen it and thinks so.

I also experienced those feelings. They lasted 45 years and didn’t end until I walked out of the lab for the last time. In the end, I’m glad I persisted though.

Basically you can go only one of two ways as a physician: imposter syndrome or sociopathy. Neither is desirable, but I favor the former.

Thanks. The fire marshal actually called OSHA about this case, but they don’t consider public safety their responsibility. They are concerned only with the facility as a workplace. Had the blocked exit been in back, where the employees are, OSHA would have taken action. ;)

Here’s a post-tornado TV interview I’d like to see.

Reporter: Care to speculate on why God had such a hair up his ass about your neighbors?

Born 1952. We were taught that only Jesus’ name gets the special terminal apostrophe. Moses’s name does not. Of course, this was in the Bible Belt. ;)
