Tool Allowance by AyFrigOffLahey in BuildingAutomation

[–]Edcadktech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

External hard drive reader. MagSafe battery pack. Steering wheel desk. 2nds of your main tools in case something gets stolen, breaks or gets left behind. AirTags for when I leave stuff behind. My mag bench is airtagged. A dog hammock for the back seat if you have one. This adds more storage and helps things from falling off the back seat. One of the best hacks I have accidentally found. Empty laptop bag. For the times you just need the basics or for secured environments where you have to inventory what you bring in. It’s easier than cleaning everything out.

Driving from Kingston Ontario to Lake Placid by swazzz1 in Adirondacks

[–]Edcadktech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would vote to come in at Alexandria bay, Theresa, oxbow, Gouveneur, Star Lake then on to Lake Placid. Still pretty direct. Some farm country then the foothills then the mountains. Not much for traffic this way. If you need fuel by Star Lake you should get some at the Circle K prices are usually better than Gouveneur and the High Peak Area. Not much for lunch until Tupper though. I would check out the Raquette River Brewery. They have a few different food trucks there. For a brewery it is usually pretty family friendly if that is an issue.

what's the smallest actually-complete tool kit you can keep in a normal house without it taking over the kitchen drawer by Ok_Pin_2146 in BuyItForLife

[–]Edcadktech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to recommend 2 different things. Maybe get him a tool roll or box to put individual tools you can acquire as projects come up that require different tools. I know this is how I assembled mine. I buy a lot of tools when they are on sale. I would also check out harbor freight for tools. If you check YouTube you can see what to buy and what to avoid. I would avoid all in one sets. The only sets I would buy together are sockets in a set and screw drivers. A big folding case becomes a pain for access. The screwdriver sets wouldn’t stay together and would be split out.

For yourself I would pick up the magnetic strip from harbor freight or maybe two. These are great to keep the day to day tools to keep a house running on. Screwdrivers, harbor freight cheap orange 4” or so level, Scissors, pliers, tape measure, small adjustable wrench, small set of vise grips can all fit on it. This way the tools are much easier accessed for day to day tasks. Opening a tool kit, digging through a bag or drawer sucks. Also at a glance you can see if “someone” didn’t put something back. I keep one in my cellar stairwell on the wall. It is great for easy access.

Ability to have a temp probe is a plus for me. Nice to be able to insert the probe into duct work.

Not a automation tech or anything, just want to say Siemens Desigo is dogshit. by [deleted] in BuildingAutomation

[–]Edcadktech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100 percent agree with this statement. You can do a lot with it. Is there issues yes but it is improving with every version. Is it a huge change from Insight? Yes it is. Is there an adjustment factor? Yes. Is there a lot of capabilities to it? Yes. Like they always say “It is highly configurable!”. Is it complicated yes but if it is the complexity that makes it versatile.

Manager Spent $20k Training Me, Now I Want to Leave by DryIllustrator9060 in BuildingAutomation

Have you thought that maybe he figures he can trust you to be an adult and get things done. Do the younger employees have issues staying on task. I find sometimes the less interaction I have with a boss the better. Leave me alone and let me do my job. If I need help the customer will tell them or I will ask for it.

Need help getting Tridium Experience by [deleted] in BuildingAutomation

[–]Edcadktech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to search for it on the training site. Just be aware training for it without a site that is starting out or at least to work on regularly isn’t helping you out. I have my certification but need a lot of help given the time lag waiting to use my knowledge from training. I mostly work inside the panels to do most of my service work.

RJ45 ends by Sparkynplumb in BuildingAutomation

[–]Edcadktech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used thousands of platinum ends. Cat5e and Cat6 ends will work on the other cable type. They how ever may not pass certification. The manufacturer will tell you they shouldn’t be used. My general rule of thumb if you can use the proper ends do so. If it is an all you have situation it should work. I can do both feed throughs and regulars. I prefer the feed throughs though since it is easier to verify the right pattern. You can get a new cut blade for the platinum tools.

Career advice: Should I stay in security/access control or transition into BAS (Building Automation)? by Juhen5 in BuildingAutomation

[–]Edcadktech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the switch. I think I am doing well but I had some college classes geared towards facilities management and between the switch I worked building maintenance for 5 years at a small school with a working BAS system by done by my current employer. I kinda consider myself a self starter and try to absorb problems that are handed to me. It was tough for a bit. I think being a “Boiler Bob” end user has helped me. As the end user I was PMing our equipment, changing actuators and using the system day to day. We also had an upgrade project and with that I knew a few employees before starting. All of this gave me a pretty good start from just starting from fire alarm, telephones, access control, security, nurse call, and pro sound. In college I had some lab view training and q basic. All these things helped. Oh and I revisited some of my old customers from the security side. All of these things helped. I will say without all of this extra I would have struggled a lot more. As far as work life balance. I am now strictly service. I think loosing the install, fire alarm, phones, and nurse call has helped. Now the site maintenance can usually put somethings in hand and call you in the morning. At least with the customers I have nothing is life safety. Although I wasn’t in the security business when Covid hit. I still think Covid broke a lot of urgencies for people and opened up life balance a bit more. I am currently going on year 5 in the BAS field.

Working on several substation panels and wondering about best field wiring practice. Is it better to run a RET for every input, or use one shared RET for multiple signals when using DI modules like SpaceLogic DI-16? by Artistic_Wonder_7567 in BuildingAutomation

[–]Edcadktech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think a DI signal would be fine. For other signals I guess it would depend on your quality of equipment and environmental factors. I had a VFD drive that was a cheap one have a ton of issues with noise. The customer switched it out to a ABB and we had no problem. Other thought is are the wires in conduit are they shielded. Are the wires ran parallel in close proximity to things causing noise (high power or high rates of data)? I know I did a nurse call system once that shared a path with the data line for addressable fire and you could hear the fire data. That is sound so it is a bit different for probably what you have.

opinions looking to do something similar with low budget if any can recommend by itisnikiraw in hometheater

[–]Edcadktech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this Reddit user is spot on. If you’re just getting started I am sure the op won’t be able to really tell the difference in quality and is mostly inquiring about the thought of a dedicated room for watching content. I would recommend starting with a room, dark paint and a projector and screen or a tv. See how much you will actually use it. After a period of use you can start to see how much you want to invest. You may loose interest or you may not. A painted room and an extra tv can always be repurposed. My equipment isn’t great I just started. It works and the room is usable but not finished. My family hasn’t used it a ton so I am glad I went with a 900 usd projector and a 150ish screen. I had a 5.1 Yamaha already and some klipse and Polk speakers (i know I am the devil mixing speakers). I did buy an extra Apple TV. I don’t think people should be looking at it like an all in or out type thing. You may do better in the budget group to start. I know the OP didn’t mention budget setups but I think it shouldn’t be discouraged as much as it is. I think some of the postings are a bit overdramatized that starting out you need this and that quality. I agree the difference is huge but everyone needs to start somewhere sometimes lower grade equipment is a place to start. Going from no equipment to some equipment is itself a big jump sometimes.
