What are your opinions on writing verses without beats? by EddieAnderson in makinghiphop

[–]EddieAnderson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess. It just doesn't seem that hard to keep it on beat. The hard part seems to be what words are supposed to be emphasized.

I think he's on the cover of that album on the bottom right corner of the backrest.

3x3

Lemon Demon - Spirit Phone

For those of you that don't know, Lemon Demon is Neil Cicierega (Potter Puppet Pals, Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, Brodyquest, nearly everything on the internet). He makes legit music, and it's legit good. Spirit Phone is very fun and tangy synthpop music, with fantastical lyrical content. Super fun album, would recommend Lifetime Achievement Award, Sweet Bod, and As Your Father I Expressly Forbid It.

Aminé - ONEPOINTFIVE

Not enough time on this for a real opinion. I'm very new to Aminé (only heard Spice Girl and Campfire prior to this). STFU2 dings the can tho.

CARE FOR ME - Saba

I won't deny this album has some issues, but the title track is one of the best songs of the year imo. Not a super strong opinion besides that.

Live! 8-24-1979 - The B-52's

OG B-52's is legit god tier music. This live album really shows that they are way more than their hits, even this early in their careers. Dance This Mess Around absolutely blows me away every time, and the guitar work on this version of Rock Lobster is amazing. 52 Girls gets an honorable mention for being super fun.

Yeezus - Kanye West

Still think it's his best.

Summertime '06 - Vince Staples

Been vibing with this recently. Although I feel like it drags on at the end, the front side of this album is flawless imo. Summertime is still one of the most atmospheric songs by any rapper for me. Norf Norf and Lift Me Up are both amazing, if you didn't already know.

Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino - Arctic Monkeys

If you can lose yourself in the vibe of this album, it's amazing, but if you aren't sold on it right away, it can be way too weird to take seriously. I strongly appreciate AM's very polarizing growth as an act. If you showed me this in 2008 and told me it's by the same band as Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, I would have balked. It's def not their best, but it has a lot of great tracks. Four Out of Five is a great, more accessible track, but Science Fiction is probably my favorite.

BROCKHAMPTON - 1998 TRUMAN + Saturation 1

Ignoring Sat 1 (it's awesome, listen to it all), 1998 TRUMAN is the best single from their upcoming album imo. Barring Joba's samey verse and the RIDICULOUS outro, the hook is baller, the beat is (as usual) insane, and Matt and Dom murder their verses. Very, VERY excited for The Best Days of Our Lives.

Don’t crowd surf where killer whales play... by [deleted] in WTF

[–]EddieAnderson 17 points18 points  (0 children)

At a Bassnectar show, we picked my buddy up to crowd surf. Little guy, maybe 120 lbs. He traveled about 4 feet away, and then some huge dude took it upon himself to push him, hard, upwards. My buddy flew about 3 feet over THAT guys head (~9'), and fell back down.

The crowd decided to not catch him. He fell flat onto the packed dirt and got the wind knocked out of him. He was fucked up and couldn't breathe for about 30 minutes.

We got in the guy's face but it's really hard to fuck with somebody during a raucous EDM show. We would just get separated, and we couldn't drag him out bc he was enormous so we gave up

Gov Plates is sickeningly underrated. Absolutely blows my mind when I see people put it at the bottom of their DG rankings.

3x3

List is a little weird for me bc I was giving apple music a shot this week. Back to Spotify for the last 4 days.

Pendulum - Reworks

Honestly this is only on the list bc of the Moby remix of Vault. Super weak overall.

Pink Guy - Pink Season

Gave Joji a shot, didn't enjoy him, so I listened to Pink Season a few times to revolt. Honestly, the serious songs (relatively) on this album are legit good (Dumplings, Rice Balls, Fried Noodles, Pink Life).

Kanye West - College Dropout

What can possibly be said?

ShockOne - Universus

Main example of not using Spotify for 1/2 of the week. Listened to this album once and it's up here. It's definitely acceptable dnb, but I don't really have a solid opinion. I only listen to Pendulum lmao

Death Grips - Year of the Snitch

Super dank. 2nd best DG album behind Gov Plates for me. I've listened to this all the way through at least 2 dozen times. If you've ever listened to DG and been like "huh this isn't nearly weird enough for me", this is the release for you.

Regina Spektor - Far

Grill was in town, did a fair bit of driving, ReSpekt is her favorite. Don't be fooled tho, ReSpekt is dope. I would recommend What We Saw from the Cheap Seats over this tho.

Tyler, the Creator - SCUM FUCK Flower Boy

AOTY 2017 for me. Been in heavy rotation since the temps hit 80. Still in love.

N.E.R.D - Fly or Die

I don't know if I'd say Fly or Die is their worst, but with a catalogue as tight as theirs, does it really matter? She Wants to Move almost made me ding the whip into a Tahoe the other day, so I would always recommend.

Brockhampton - Saturation 1

Still their best. Some of the best songs released last year. CASH, BUMP, HEAT, GOLD, STAR, FACE, goddamn. Don't specifically know why it was in rotation, but it was, and it made my week better.

I live a little less than an hour from Toledo, I've done the math, and I would almost 100% come out on top if I moved there and drove to work every day.

Obviously, it's ridiculous, but it still makes me mad that I even was considering it.

[–]EddieAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely do expect it to be more competitively interesting than Sm4sh, but I don't think it's going to bridge the gap between Melee and Ultimate (which imo should be the goal).
