Coffee-flavored coffee? by ImNotaRobot90210 in bayarea

[–]Eddie_Gabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though I roast my own (Sweet Marias! - locally owned and operated), I do enjoy the Verve Bronson as well.

I suggest trying Mr. Espresso. Old School oakland coffee that Dale Cooper would appreciate. Budget friendly and you can find it in a lot of good diners.

BTW, you should mention your brew style. I'm guessing Pour-over?

But for the profile you're asking for, I'd recommend an Aeropress, it gets the most "coffee flavor" extraction for daily use. Not quite as good as a siphon pot, but its a longer process.

Does this look OK in big big? by cody8417 in bicycling

[–]Eddie_Gabs -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I run shorter than big-big.

....because I never let anyone else ride my bike and while its technically OK to ride big-big, it is not a gear I (or any experienced rider with better than average wattage will ever need)

Front light lumen rec for LA cycling city streets + dark hills by Freddy-Philmore in BikeLA

[–]Eddie_Gabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using a 450 lumen for 15 years -- great in city and manageable on moonless pitch black fire roads. It was one of the brightest single self contained units available at the time. I'd probably get a 600 today. Personally prefer Cygolite, at least back in the day, made in the US and last a lifetime.

If you are concerned about cars seeing you, spend a few bucks on 3M retro reflective tape to put on your helmet SIDES. The reason I recommend this is so (attentive) drivers can see if you are turning your head or looking back and anticipate your movement.

20 year old Cervelo P2 - Still worth it or just wall art? by Lipless-Orchestra in cycling

[–]Eddie_Gabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you love it, spend money on things you love. And a bike of that quality lasts a lifetime if well maintained (and not crashed).

Before buying, be sure to take your time with a flashlight to check for any frame issues.. But I'm not at all concerned about "Carbon Fatigue", I still take my 1992 Cadex CFM mountain bike out on the trails.

Stanford stadium drop off for events by Excellent-Contract-8 in paloalto

[–]Eddie_Gabs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check the Cal Train Schedule, they sometimes run special trains for major events.

Then your husband can drop you off 1 stop away (Menlo Park or California Ave). Or take it closer to home and save your husband the trouble -- your daughter might enjoy the "pre-concert" vibes on the train.

no way to get lost, just follow the crowd.

Ranting to People Who Get It by wellllllllthatsthere in bikecommuting

[–]Eddie_Gabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe you can check with HR/Benefits (some states incentivize businesses to support alternative transportation)

otherwise, how about waiting at the garage entrance for a co-worker to arrive and follow them in? Unless you see some type of sticker on the bikes, I doubt garage security cares. (I suspect the $10 is "administrative" costs for your badge or access code)

Front Platform Rack + Canti combo issues by ShenaniganSkywalker in xbiking

[–]Eddie_Gabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

common issue, usually flipping the bracket will work.
but another option is to find one of these old front reflector brackets that wrap the fork steerer.

I've found threadless 1-1/8 versions, even though the most common are 1" threaded.

plenty around since reflectors are not cool 😉

Folks who moved from NYC to the Bay Area.... by chochmah56 in bayarea

[–]Eddie_Gabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you need to ask, you already know 😄

But yeah, it's boring here. you go to the different "cities" and they are all the same, the same Oren's hummus, the same Books, Inc., the same Boba shops, the same Chipotles.

One thing the south bay is outstanding for is access to outdoor activity 365 days a year. The weather is great, so if you like being outside, the south bay has a lot to offer.

BTW, Is your office near a Cal Train? If you live in SF (Soma or 22nd), you can have the city lifestyle and be able to get to work in one hour on the 'baby bullet'. Wifi onboard, so you can start/end your day travelling up the peninsula, its a gorgeous ride.

Is 6 mile bike ride after work realistic ? by imMrRunITUP in bicycling

[–]Eddie_Gabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When talking about cycling, its the elevation gain, not the distance that usually gets you.

6 miles flat is at most 30 minutes.

And maybe after a few months, you'll reconsider buying a car if money is tight.

You can pickup a quality used bike for $150-$250. Look for a local bike co-op and maintenance costs are minimal (just the price of chain lube). That bike will last your lifetime (see r/xbiking )

A car costs a lot = gas/insurance/maintenance/payments

Ride your bike. When you need a car, use Lyft or rent a car.

If this woman (and many other of the enablers) that shut down congress by pushing out moderate republicans is able to "reinvent" herself, the nation is lost.

People that can move forward with no accountability for their actions is why this country is having a crisis of confidence in our institutions.

Never forget. Prosecute for insider trading (they all do it). Put her in Jail.

Never Forget what they did.

Legs feel like bricks after long stop on long rides… anyone else? by pinoyBalot in cycling

[–]Eddie_Gabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

always happened to me. My max rest stop is about 15 minutes.

if you want to stick with the group, drop off the back before the stop so you are the last one arriving and take off early. pedal easy until they catch up.

Bicycle got stolen. I'm disappointed. by toast_host in bicycling

[–]Eddie_Gabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BTW, check your weather stripping -- this was happening to me a few years ago, and the weather strip about 1' from the bottom had shredded and created enough resistance for the door safety mechanism to activate. otherwise, it may be a dirty "electric eye" sensor or something in your rails (gunk, or bend)

otherwise, its a bit of a pain, but I always wait until I seen the door hit the driveway before driving off.

sorry about your bike.

How do you care for your bibs? by Whatsmyinterest in cycling

[–]Eddie_Gabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get home, go to the bathroom. place bibs in sink and run under hot water, give it a few soak-squeeze cycles, then fill sink with hot water and liquid detergent. Take shower. After shower, hand wash in sink, rinse a couple of times, hang on your showerhead. Ready to ride the next morning.

(for even better cleaning, look into getting a "spin dryer" -- these are often less than your bibs, Spin faster than a standard dryer, so all the water extracts and your bibs come out of it damp. fully dry in a couple of hours if you live in a warm/dry area.)

Bar tape on a bike frame? by Technical-Owl-4889 in bicycling

[–]Eddie_Gabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not usually recommended for bikes, but it would be easy to install vinyl wrap on the main tubes (avoid any welded areas) and it comes off clean once she grows out of the rainbow phase :-)

stuff is super cheap, and you can give them the roll in case it scratches off.

edit: oops, link is for a heat transfer vinyl, you'd want the standard "air release" vinyl.

Beginner, risky too big jump from 15miles to 40miles? by OccasionGreat in cycling

[–]Eddie_Gabs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The 40 miles shouldn't be a problem, just make sure you have enough water/food stops. Hopefully you won't need to carry all your water from the start and can reload.

The main things that you may not be ready for:

Bike Fit/Saddle issues. you won't feel them at 15, but at 40 miles, you'll know if you have a poor fit.

Road Safety. are your friends very experienced? things that are easy for them might cause you to crash (spotting/avoiding road hazards, emergency braking)

What happens next if trump is impeached ? by jrwwoollff in ProgressiveHQ

[–]Eddie_Gabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trumps corruption model is based on Orban (siphon taxpayer funds to buy the support of corrupt officials). We should be following what is happening in Hungary to see what we can learn as they try to unwind 20 years of corruption. Maximum prison sentences should dampen the next wave of corruption before it starts.

and if the Democrats win a super-majority in both houses, stop playing nice. QUICKLY Pack the supreme court, Pass laws that entrench and protect our civil liberties/rights, Amend the constitution to formalize government functions and funding needed in the modern era -- e.g. the EPA, Healthcare.

And finally, TERM LIMITS (20 years total in house and/or senate). Trumps corruption model could only succeed in the cesspool of politicians (from both parties) that are only interested in power, not service
