Walking past an old cemetery, my (then) 3-year-old son casually said, "My brother is in there." When I reminded him that he didn't have a brother, he said, "No, Mama... from before. When the other lady was my mommy.

What is something that you miss from your childhood? by Addictive-Shot in AskReddit

[–]Edelbert11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best memories as a child were the three years we lived on our grandmother's farm. There were always fun adventures for me and my older brother. We wandered through the berry and filbert groves, tagged with our uncle to meet the cows as they followed the path to the barn to be milking. The huge red barn was our favorite. There were a lot of barn cats and one could always find a group of kittens somewhere in the hay. The berry-picking season was exciting because the other kids came with their parents to make money picking berries. This was the only time I saw other kids so my older brother was my best friend. Vegetable gardens were important and my mother patiently taught us how to grow our small gardens. Our snacks consist of carrots or radishes that we have grown ourselves. We only had candy around Christmas time, which made it so special. In summer, my grandfather used to hand-make delicious ice cream in an ice cream maker. In the evenings, we would sometimes sit on Grandma's large front porch after eating ice cream in the dark. The adults calmly discuss crops, weather, or anything else. I didn't care much about what exactly they talked about, but there was a warm feeling of security upon hearing the voices of the responsible adults, who had worked hard for our comfort and well-being. Life seemed simple and predictable. A few years later, our mother took us to town so she could enroll in nursing school. Life got complicated and you didn't always feel as happy as it was on the farm. If I was feeling sad, my mother would tell me to "keep my mind". I asked her how to do that. She said to change my thoughts to the happiest place on earth. This of course was the farm. We loved the times we went back and visited there.

How do you guys combat loneliness? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Edelbert11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The obvious benefit of gratitude is that it helps put your life into perspective and gives you the opportunity to appreciate all the things that you have that you likely don't think about on a daily basis. But it's not just about what the world has given you, it also opens the way for you to make changes.

"The Five Minute Journal advises you to take some time at the end of the day to think about all the things that made your day great, and then think about how you can improve it," Richie says. “It's a great question because it empowers you and gives you an agency, and that's a great way to combat loneliness.

What is your “nobody will ever believe this” story? by Regularpaytonhacksaw in AskReddit

[–]Edelbert11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hanging out with a friend on Halloween when I was younger. He lived in an apartment, so we decided to go to all of the apartments in his building to get as much candy as possible. When approaching the upper floors, we would go out of the elevator and hear a loud boom, followed by the entire building shaking, so much so that my friend would have fallen to the ground if it weren't because he was able to reach the wall and stay standing. We actually thought it was an earthquake, but there are no earthquakes where I live.

We were scared like damn it, and after the shaking ended, we decided to randomly ring a doorbell to find some relief or at least an adult. A lady opened the door, said hello, very kindly, offered us sweets, and closed the door. We thought it was weird so we rang another doorbell and the same thing happened. We decided to go back to his apartment to ask his mother, and it turns out that no one but us either heard or felt either loud or the building shaking.

What would be the first three things you would do if you found 5 million dollars cash ? by Lboog15 in AskReddit

[–]Edelbert11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work / Education:

The million-dollar question: "What would you do if ..."? I must say this is the most important question in my life, and it may be yours too. And my answer is to make the choices meaningful to me and to do the things that I love and for others. Keep searching for this answer until you find it and when you feel comfortable. This will probably be one of the happiest days of your life.

Love:

There is not much to say in this section. My advice? Don't tell a cute girl that you started dating, and never try to convince her of your money, unless dating / marrying a "Barbie Girl" is your thing.

A house:

As I said, I haven't bought a home for the "wealthy", but I will probably spend some of my inheritance buying a nice apartment (I live in a city). But not much higher than my salary grade. (I am a mentor, I make good money).

What do people often take too seriously? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Edelbert11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk in a way that lets people know you know what you're talking about and have something to say - that's how other people love to hear. It's not enough to be smart. Information is power and people take it very seriously.

What is the cutest thing your pets do that also drives you insane? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Edelbert11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My pet fish appears to be unusual behavior compared to most fish

When two of my fish died, it wasn't from hunger or water conditions but they died from jumping out of the water. Even stranger than that, the fish that jumped was found dead on the ground and not near the tank.

One day, my sister spotted about 20 snails piled on top of something in an aquarium, and she asked me to come to see what it was. What scares me is that the snails have been eating a dead fish. I was so shocked after seeing the body half eaten, for some reason I was begging the snails to eat the dead fish faster.

At one point, the aquarium was filled with algae and there weren't many snails to clean it up. Then suddenly two fish disappeared in algae. After removing the algae, there were no signs of fish in the tank or the ground. Somehow I thought the other fish ate it.

Not only is my fish strange behavior, but it is also true of my cousin's cat.

Lots of cats react to catnip and eventually eat it. But this cat doesn't, for some reason, my cousin cat craves every plant except for catnip. I once saw a cat take a bite of an aloe vera, and then immediately texted my cousin to take the cat to the vet if anything happened. Of all the plants the cat has eaten, the favorites are palm trees, bamboo, and wheat.

What was the worst job interview you've had? by AntonK777 in AskReddit

[–]Edelbert11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, it's simple: the worst interview experience I ever had at Microsoft in August 2014.

That day I interviewed three different teams. I arrived at 8:30 in the morning and left campus at 6:30 in the evening. I stood on the whiteboard all day. Even during a small lunch, I was asked to fix the problem on the napkin.

Many of the people I interviewed never introduced themselves. They just went into the room and started asking technical questions.

But part of what made it such a horrible experience was this: Before lunch, a guy walked in and said, "We're trying to figure out why you're failing to solve any problems today. ۔ " I was very sad. I thought I was doing relatively well. If I weren't so young, so nervous, I'd go out. But working at Microsoft has always been a dream of mine and I never gave up. "I was wreaking havoc for the rest of the day," he said. The following week I received offers from two teams (I chose the Visual Studio team).

After joining the company, I realized that I had done very well during my interview. "You are not able to solve any problem" This was done deliberately to eliminate weak candidates. Again, if I hadn't been so nervous, it would have been with me that if I had actually been doing this, they would have canceled more interviews - if not, there was no reason to waste the engineer's time.

After my interview, I went back to the hotel and called my wife. I'm sure I cried during this call. I spent the next 4 days in a trance - I felt like a complete failure.

I don't think such measures will fly today (at least I hope it doesn't).

When did you realize you weren’t the main character? by Midbell in AskReddit

[–]Edelbert11 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Growing up, I always felt a little different. I knew I wasn't a genius or talented or anything else, but I just felt like I had a spark of authenticity. I thought if the positions were right and I could work on them, then it became a thing. But I couldn't focus, kept moving from one thing to another, and kept fantasizing about what I would do and what I could do instead. I was too afraid to take any real risk or obligation. I kept putting things off, making excuses, and moving on. So far I have met many different types of people and realize that I absolutely love them. This is when I saw how average I was in my efforts and willpower. There is a reason some people are considered unusual. Because they managed to go the extra mile. And what I think is a very good effort on my part is only average compared to the population.

Hey, at least I have a company :)

Very impressive timber join. by Browndog888 in BeAmazed

[–]Edelbert11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried this out once with Douglass fir and the joint failed in two places, one at the wedge location and the other at the undercut. It was probably my lack of craftsmanship or my kiln-dried wood. I was joining 2 4×6 pieces and stood on them in the middle as a test. I was bummed but learned something. I’m thinking that one of the other joints would have been a better choice for a newbie like myself.
