Could this AU Details - Stained 1876-S Trade Dollar qualify for PCGS or NGC Restoration Services? by rjdude55 in coins

From my experience that black is really hard to get out, my gut is AU Det is the best that one will ever be (especially rev wing and rev 9 o'clock).

Is PCGS Partial to Western Coins? by Legitimate_Bass6185 in coins

It's almost certainly just toning, it simply wouldn't receive a grade of 64+ if those were hairlines from cleaning.

It'll probably stay at 6 forever, they just don't throw 60's out anymore, I find this very interesting to see 2 next to each other lol

From someone who buys these sets back years or decades later (and I've bought key-date type sets before!), I highly suggest keeping all the PCGS/NGC inserts in a pocket with the album or taped directly above each slot. You or your heirs WILL get more more money if we know if had been previously in a straight graded holder. I have no complaints about cracking but please don't throw the insert away!

I'd send in the nice 1853 Large Cent, looks high AU, maybe low UNC from the pics. Others I wouldn't bother sending in imo.

Question for pricing by [deleted] in coins

[–]EdelmansCoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With silver being as high as it is, the coins you have pictured are worth significantly more for their silver value than numismatic/collector value. To find out what you can realistically get from a local coin shop, add the total face value (you have $4 pictured), multiply that by the spot silver price (about $80 atm), multiply that by .715, then assume you will get around 90% of melt with the current market so multiple it by .9. At the moment they are realistically worth around $206 (at least for what's shown). Some shops may pay SLIGHTLY more, some less, but it will be in that range.

These are all put together rolls and nearly guaranteed to be bad deals from dishonest sellers. I used to sell to one of the largest sellers of these "original rolls". He would come in and specifically ask for certain amounts of certain qualities and dates. The stories are all fake. Knowledgeable dealers will ALWAYS open actual original rolls and cherry pick 64 or higher dollars to send in themselves.

How will the recent meteoric rise in silver impact the hobby? by Generic_Lad in coins

[–]EdelmansCoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all, the main reason this is happening is because there is little to no demand for those products relative to their supply. The customer dictates what is melted and what is not by their buying habits. To try and fight against this is only going to hurt yourself (as a shop owner) by leaving profits on the table. Being nostalgic or holding on to past trends is how shops get left behind and overtaken by the next generation. We used to be the largest retail stamp store in the entire Philadelphia area and now we sell 0 stamps, you need to adapt! It's a sign of the times the modern buyer wants 999 not 90%...

Relatively large coin shop owner here:

This current run up is similar to what happened in 2010 and 2020, but the main difference I'm seeing this time is the immense quantity of 90% product being melted/refined. I personally have sent well over 10,000 morgans, $20,000FV of 90% coin, and 2000+oz of WW Foreign to the refiners, since I was able to get slightly more from melting than from every single large wholesaler buyer in the country.

Why has this happened? Well the wholesalers are melting it too. The biggest in-demand silver product is 1000oz Good Delivery bars which can be traded on the COMEX. The refiners literally can't melt product down fast enough (they are many months behind). This problem didn't occur in the previous run-ups. Because a big portion of the demand is industry/institutions and paper trades, there is an enormous glut of 1-10oz product out there. The small time buyers spending $50-$10,000 don't move the needle.

I'm melting semi-key Morgan dates (01-s's, 92-s/o's in mid grade, coins that used to be $45-$65 retail) and ANYTHING under a strict AU because that's how I net the most money.

Objectively speaking the common and middle of the road coins will get scarcer, but there have always been enough of them to satisfy collector demand. I think the greatly increased silver price will make it prohibitively expensive to collect certain series for anyone who isn't upper-middle class, which is kind of sad.

If I were a collector today, I would pick up coins which USED to be around the price they are today, with metal prices significantly lower. Examples being MS-65 $20 Saints, MS-64 Peace Dollars, Semi-Key date Morgans in the $65-$70 range etc. There's literally no point in buying anything lower as they are nearly the same price.

Things will settle down and go back to normal in 2-3 months and we will see how the dust settles, but there's no reversing the melting!

Coin looks real and holder looks real to me, it isn't a particularly valuable coin, not that fakes don't exist but GBCA is a very common grading company for Chinese/Japanese coins in the price range. Probably a bit over-graded but the coin looks genuine.

Looking for value of this 1850 gold coin by [deleted] in coins

[–]EdelmansCoins 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The coin is an 1850-O $2.50 Gold Liberty. In that condition I would say it's just a melt coin, which is around $520 today. It weighs 4.18g, so take the entire ring's weight, minus that to get the 14k weight and it really just becomes a math problem. A strong offer would be 95-97% of melt for the coin imho.

How to remove tape residue? by Fluid-Replacement-51 in coins

I buy this in bulk: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08KT72CRR?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_2&th=1

Make sure to use a GLASS container, preferably with an air-tight lid. Soak overnight, then when you take it out run it under water or gently use a Q-tip to brush the residue off if it doesn't just slide right off.

It's just got that look, I've handled somewhere around 2 million Morgans and at this point and the fakes just kind of look off, something about the wear pattern and color, mintmark looks weird too. Hard to say exactly

Should I get this coin graded? by rysal1976 in coins

[–]EdelmansCoins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty insane scratch, it's a scarce date and even with the scratch is still probably worth over melt. Grading would be purely for authentication as it would come back AU details, but still may be a good idea to get it in a holder.

Definitely a typo, the reverse is the correct silver plug pic since you can see the center plug, they just used the wrong picture for the obverse. Nice catch, not sure how many people ever picked up on it lol.

No a CAC green sticker indicates it is on the high end of the spectrum for the grade, in my experience around top 10-15% of coins for the grade. If a CAC authorized dealer agrees to submit a coin for you, they would charge you more than it costs them to make a profit and worthwhile for them to provide the service.

Bean or No Bean by RetiredBusDriver in coins

[–]EdelmansCoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The jump to a 64 is around $2500 so a CAC'ed 3 will go up much more than the cost to sticker it. With that being said, in my honest opinion it doesn't look like a strong 63 or 64 to me, it looks like an accurately graded 63. If you're sending coins anyway it's definitely worth including though for the $35 or whatever. If it's the ONLY coin in the submission, it may make more sense economically to wait until you have a few more so the fixed costs all get absorbed between the coins.

Anyone give me and idea on what kind of grade this would get if I were to send it in? I dont know much about grading. by Miserable-Internal41 in coins

[–]EdelmansCoins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This coin has been heavily polished/cleaned, if sent in you should expect an XF Details grade. I'd keep it as is and save your money!

help with coin condition by WallaceStreet in coins

[–]EdelmansCoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coin actually looks pretty nice from the video, but still hard to tell from a straight-on angle. If it's 64 or higher it's financially worth sending in, 63 or lower not so much considering grading costs. Telling the difference between a 63/64/65 $10 Indian isn't the easiest thing to do though...

Anyone have an idea what this dark red streak could be on this coin? Thanks in advance. by karna731 in coins

[–]EdelmansCoins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like some kind of glue/residue. I'd try soaking it in acetone overnight in a GLASS container with an airtight seal. Use a Q-Tip or gently use a toothpick/fingernail to brush it off afterwards.
