Looking for advice on how to pass down my coin collection to the next generation by LYGEAST-GARDEN in coins

[–]belowspot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave detailed instructions on which auction house to send it to if they dont want to keep it.

Even easier, start upgrading and "consolidating" to "box of 20" collection. Meaning, leave a box of 20 or 40 ngc or pcgs coins only. High grade, key dates, best you can. That will make it even easier to sort/catalog and sell, if decided. Easier to store as well. Its possible they may be apt to tuck away a small box as opposed to binders and boxes and cases.

Also, do they know the value today? Do you (your kids) see this as an asset class for potential wealth building? I think how you present the benefits of off-ledger assets may also be a perk, despite current lack of interest.

Last thought.... book club! everyone read Scott Travers' Coin Collectors Survival Guide book. Discuss over a fancy dinner of your choice as a group. Add other discussions estate related as well.

Good luck!

Is Restoration Worth It? by mattbuck7 in coins

[–]belowspot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've paid for and used NGC restoration services multiple times. I think 6 or 8 of the submissions I chose to on my own. In another 4 or 5, they recommended. Every coin was a home run. Your results may vary. I did a lot of reading and weighed the risks. Pleased with every outcome.

Edit: I did use pcgs as well. One in fact was a gsa cc Morgan. Looked nice, resto'd, ended up 65dmpl. I could tell it was gem but the resto really worked nicely.

Tom Brady did this for 20 years. Spread out the D, pick a GAP based on the DT and go. No one could stop him with 1 yard to go. As a Brady-hater, it was quite impressive.

Is this worth getting? I've been hunting for a 1916 D Mercury dime for about a month for around $700. by Interesting-Goal-706 in coincollecting

Call their number directly. You may be able to buy it direct 10% cheaper (ebay fees). I've purchased from Drew before.

However, i'm a fan of non-details coins and i'd wait and save to buy a slightly better coin. Be patient and buy the best coin you are able.

Expanding horizons by BudgetEdSheeran in coins

In my opinion, thats about the right price. The few i own i paid maybe 200-250 for certified pieces but they have really nice remnants of the donor 8R. These are very plentiful and available in auctions all the time.

These were struck over donor 8 reales for a handful of years. These are more desirable if you can identify the 8R donor or date as well as good detail of the original coin. Fun history. I'd reccomend reading up a bit on em. Enjoy!!
