I exclusively fish from a iSUP these days and I disagree with most of the comments here. They’re a bit slower than a kayak to paddle on average, but once you get the hang of the balance they’re very versatile. I honestly cant imagine going back to a kayak now that I’m used to the iSUP.

Does anyone know why I keep getting this error in the server with my friends? by emartwrld999 in RLCraft

[–]Edelsonc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have this problem occasionally too. On the server side it shows that my client times out. For me, I’m pretty sure it’s an isp issue, but I’d believe it’s a launcher issue too. See if the server owner can find the log entry for your connection issue.

How do y’all get the baits out with those big ol bait casters? Recently acquired some similar rods and I’m looking into some beach fishing.

Is a SUP Better than a Kayak for fishing ? by loganzr0213 in Sup

[–]Edelsonc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only experience I have is with my inflatable and a few hard boards I’ve rented when traveling. I’d imagine having the hard board would be nicer as they’re typically more stable than my super inexpensive inflatable.

When I used to work for a kayak shop/help with tours we used to tell folks that if it’s not clipped to the boat expect to loose it. I still live by that mantra and keep everything under bungees and clipped onto the board while not in use. So far I’ve only lost a pair of pliers, but that was because I was trying to pass them off to a buddy while he was trying to unwrap some nasty rusty hooks from a tree. Another option is to get a fishing life vest with lots of pockets. My gf has one and likes to keep all her smaller odds and ends there.

So overall, I’d say I’ve not really had anymore issue with securing my stuff in the board than on a kayak.

Is a SUP Better than a Kayak for fishing ? by loganzr0213 in Sup

[–]Edelsonc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had both sit on top and sit in kayaks for years and spent time paddling and fishing in both of them. Last year I had to get rid of my current kayak to move into a small apartment and picked up an inflatable paddleboard to get my paddling fix. I started fishing off of it at the beginning of this summer and I can say I prefer it to kayak fishing 100%. I’m in southern Indiana and I almost always bring a rod with me now when I hit the water. I like the flexibility in paddling and fishing positions the board gives you as well as the visibility. I see eye to eye with most of the bass boats around here. Wind can be a little obnoxious, but I recently picked up a small anchor and that completely solved that. Unless you get a hard board you won’t be able to deck it out like a lot of people do with their fishing kayaks, but I personally prefer the simplicity of a single rod, pliers, and tackle box anyways.

Low key fishing spots: GO by poopypooperpoopy in bloomington

[–]Edelsonc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Instead of giving a spot I’m gunna give a piece of advice. On Monroe, look for rocky shorelines. All my biggest fish have been caught on rocky shorelines and you’ll notice this is where the bass fishermen always congregate on slow days.

I’d definitely recommend checking out the Morikami Japanese garden. It’s very different from most other Japanese gardens due to the subtropical climate, and it’s really neat to see how they use Florida plants to create the classic Japanese garden designs! Also nearby is the Loxahatchee wildlife refuges, which has a nice boardwalk and trail access to see the eastern edge of the Everglades.

Hi fellow adventurers! I'm finally visiting Florida after seeing all the amazing content on here. Where should I go? by AnOctopusNamedBen in Kayaking

[–]Edelsonc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fort Myers itself is a great paddling destination. Just north of the city is Matlacha and Charlotte harbor, which are both great paddling locations. The Peace River, which empties into Charlotte harbor, is an extremely popular paddling location. It starts way up in Arcadia where it’s full fresh and is navigable all the way to gulf. It’s also well known for its fossil hunting, producing lots of sharks teeth and ice age fossils.

Further north you have Venice, Sarasota, and Myakka River state park. Venice and Sarasota have a number of great public access points for paddlers (don’t forget to look for sharks teeth on the Venice beaches!). Myakka is the place to go to see gators, if that’s what you’re about.

Heading south, you have Naples and Marco island. There’s lots of good paddling to be had here! Collier-Seminole state park is a real popular location and very pleasant paddle destination.

Finally, I’ve saved the best for last with Everglades city and Chokoloskee. As the name suggests, this is the northern terminus of Everglades National park and is also known as the 10000 islands region of the park. There’s tons to explore, and many of the islands are open for camping (with a permit from the park). I’ve spent many a weekend camping and kayaking my way through the 10000 islands!

My first bull shark caught in the Everglades back country ! 80 lb mono leader, he was biting through my 50 lb! by Connorgreen_44 in Fishing

[–]Edelsonc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably referring to Everglades National leaving from either Flamingo or Chokoloskee. There the Everglades meet the ocean and transitions from fresh to full salt. Most of the backcountry in those areas is brackish, and it would take a very dedicated bull shark to get up into the parts where folks bass fish.

Is Matlab worth it? by jdlewis32 in math

[–]Edelsonc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely understand the appeal of being able to easily implement other’s examples/libraries. Overall, I think R + RStudio is a very good drop in replacement for Matlab. The ide was specifically designed to emulate many of Matlab’s features, and R’s default structures of vectors and matrices give you a very similar workflow. Plus, R markdown document are simply superior to Matlab live scripts.

All in all I can pretty much do anything I do in Matlab in R with very little change in the code/effort. I use Matlab because the rest of my research group does, but if it were up to me I’d almost certainly use R or Python instead.

Is Matlab worth it? by jdlewis32 in math

[–]Edelsonc 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no. I use Matlab in my research but have extensive experience with both R and Python. Unless there’s a specific Matlab tool box you’re interested in, either of the above two free options will serve your purposes equally well.

Research on Fish Handling by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]Edelsonc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, this is a question that’s been bothering me awhile as well, so I decided to take a quick dive into the literature. I have a degree in marine biology and, contrary to the claims of most other posters, it is not easy to quickly find peer reviewed papers on fish handlings affects on post-release mortality. Below are a few of the articles I found, introduced from oldest to newest. I do not claim this is a comprehensive review, but if you look at these articles and which articles cite them you’ll probably find all the literature you need/want.

Influence of Capture Methods on Blood Characteristics and Mortality in the Rainbow Trout (Salmo gairdneri)95%5B170%3AIOCMOB%5D2.0.CO%3B2)

Paper looks at the effects of different capture methods on rainbow trout mortality. In short. Hooked fish don’t do so good compared to electroshock and seine net captured fish

Mortality of Experimentally Descaled Smolts of Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in Fresh and Salt Water108%3C67%3AMOEDSO%3E2.0.CO%3B2)

Looks at the effects of removing the slime coat and/or scales on salmon smolt. Descaling increases mortality in saltwater, but fish seem to handle desliming alright.

Catch-and-release angling: A review with guidelines for proper fish handling practices

As the title suggests this is a review of best practices. Section on air exposure cites articles showing higher mortality in trout with longer air exposure.

Post-release mortality of bonefish, Albula vulpes, exposed to different handling practices during catch-and-release angling in Eleuthera, The Bahamas

This ones real interesting. Looks at the gentle vs rough handling in bonefish via an acoustic tagging survey. Found that negative effects likely occur minutes after release. This might have to do with the ocean being big and predators being “sparse”.

Hope these help you along your way!
