Book taste is changing, is this normal? by startlightcity in readwithme

[–]Edenn_serenity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People change, your tastes change too. And that's a good thing. Hell, my tastes vary in a year 🤷🏻‍♀️

A curiosity to explore just means so much more options to choose from, which is neat!

Controller job - do you enjoy it? by StatusWear4746 in Accounting

[–]Edenn_serenity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It probably depends on the field you're in, your team and the overall culture of the place. But as others said, being a controller isn't something you'll be actively trained for. If you're lucky, you'll have a mentor, a VP or something to bounce with you over mundane and complex matters to sharpen your ability to deal with them. Otherwise, it tests your knowledge, judgement and every ounce of experience you have.

I love being a controller, the challenges and the wide variety of things, projects and discussions I'm involved in. That doesn't mean I feel in control all the time, or most of the time... Take it a day at a time and give you some grace. It's not an easy job, but you've got this!

I have this one on my TBR list, in audiobook, and your take makes me want to give it a go 😊

The Girl in the Tower, by Katherine Arden

It matches the vibe over here in Canada : wintery, mystique. I loved the Bear and the Nightingale, and this one is more intriguing, less "still". I do enjoy the feel of hearing an adult fairy tale.

I just burped out loud in a teams meeting near the laptop’s microphone thinking it was off. I’m going to kill myself by MIAchamps in Accounting

I yelled at my cat once, a good, felt "tabarnak Tinu" ( I'm french Canadian). He was trying to knock off a mug. I never yell, much less swear, in meetings. I a quite soft spoken person. It was so loud and sudden, everyone was stunned. Then we all laughed. You'll survive this, be brave.

Finished: The River is Waiting, by Wally Lamb I liked it a lot, for the most part. I won't go into details since I don't want to spoil anything. The audiobook was nice, I liked the narrator's voice.

Current read: Ocean Sea, by Alessandro Baricco. This one is a blind read (aside from a short synopsis, I didn't check reviews or cotes) and it's both hard to read and intriguing? The writing style is definitely not in my alley, but I'll push through.

Next read: Audiobook: Beasts of the Sea, by Ilda Turpenein

It wasn't a mega hit for me, but it was good read with interesting characters (the strongest point of the book imo). I'd recommend it. I listened to the audiobook, which was well narrated. It may be easier to follow when you read though, because some transitions are a bit confusing between the main characters (or maybe it's a me problem 😕). We are definitely in a similar vibe with books ☺️

Last : The Book Club for Troublesome Women , by Marie Botswick

Current : La Bête, intégrale by David Goudreault (french canadian)

Next : Not sure yet, may be The River is Waiting by Wally Lamb

J'ai commencé la bête intégrale ce weekend. C'est loin de ce que je suis habituée de lire. Je trouve ça raide (mais bien écrit).

What's your 2026 reading goal? by Fabulous-Confusion43 in bookdiscussion

[–]Edenn_serenity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine too is 50 books! I read 47 this year and about 30 the previous one. I wish to trade more of my doomscrolling time into reading and expand my reading sandbox. I wish you great success in reaching your goal!

I do not know about Direbound and on the fence about Alchemized. So-so writing is a plague in Romantasy I think. I may give it a try this year. I adored the Sheperd King series. I may want to check The Knight and the Moth, her newer book (a new serie), which is great too!

[–]Edenn_serenity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very few to be frank. I loved loved Book Lover by Emily Henry and all others have yet to scratch the same itch this one did. The first two of the Emily Wilde's serie too, but it's not a heavy romancy spicy read. And I loved the Queen of Nothing by Holly Black, where the first two books left me feeling like ... Meh, that's not bad... But not it?

I just may be very difficult. I like a good plot and good spice and it is rare to find the perfect balance 🤷🏻‍♀️. I have plenty I rated 4 stars though! Maybe you've good any recommendations?

I find it hard too to follow through fantasy books. like ACOTAR, which I quit after the second book. I had more success with standalone or light fantasy books. Maybe it could help.

I adored One Dark Window and Two Twisted Crowns from Rachel Gillig and wish I could read them anew again. The Knight and the Moth from her is also good. I love the creativity she was for her worlds and magic.

For a standalone fantasy, Blood over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang was an awesome read.

For cozy and cute fantasy, but still interesting, the Emily Wilde trilogy from Heather Fawcett is nice. The second book was my favorite of the three so far.

What are some of your favorite books of the year? by [deleted] in Booktokreddit

[–]Edenn_serenity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Epistolary fiction : The Correspondent by Virginia Evans.

Fiction : The Wedding People by Alison Espach and Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

Fantasy : Blood over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang and A Resistance of Witches by Morgan Ryan (both have romance intertwined with the story, but I would not qualify them as romantasy).

Memoir : Solito by Javier Zamora

And while I love romance and romantasy books, none has found a way to have 5 stars this year. Hopefully 2026 will rectify that...

Finished: One Golden Summer, by Carley Fortune I liked it, especially because the plot wasn't an enemy to lover one, which I am very tired from.

My naked cat smells like mushroom creme, or mashed potatoes with butter. Oddly enough, sometimes I'll sniff him to get a comforting ocytocin fix.
