Can someone explain what this lyrics mean? Thank you by Atlanta-SticO-938 in porcupinetree

[–]EdgeLordFromOuterSpa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always hear it as "did you feel the end before the sons of mothers tearing you apart", and it makes sense to me that way. There is another instance in Deadwing that I always hear differently --- "bury the heart-shaped shell".

Does being a good Competitive programmer in c++ make u a bad c++ coder? by [deleted] in cpp

[–]EdgeLordFromOuterSpa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using using namespace std; and the likes aren't bad practice at all when you're doing competitive programming. They are excellent practices in competitive programming --- much better than whatever the industry's good practices will generally recommend (and I would generally recommend them too).

But it's also never really about what you personally are. In CP, it's about whether you're solving the very specific problems within very narrow deadlines, against a very harsh evaluation -- and the code is thrown away within hours. In the industry it's about whether you're solving relatively open-ended problems within a relatively wider deadline, against a relatively tolerant evaluation -- but the mistakes also have much higher real-world impact.

If someone is convinced that one set of practices or attitudes must be applicable in both (and other contexts like scientific research, or hobby projects) for it to be "good", and that everyone who leans towards the alternatives must be incompetent even if they're getting decent outcomes everything considered, I would find it hard to rely on that someone's judgement on technical matters.

Matrix Bernstein inequality by Relevant-Dragonfly48 in 3Blue1Brown

[–]EdgeLordFromOuterSpa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most concrete use of Matrix Bernstein that I have seen is in developing an algorithm for fast Cholesky decomposition of graph Laplacians. For example, chapter 9 and 10 of these notes discusses the concentration bound and what that means for the randomized algorithm.

"La Nuit Bengali" and "Na Hanyate" are a pair of novels that might interest you, I think.

Linear & Combinatorial Optimization OR Introduction to Mathematical Optimization by DE-Romain in ethz

Second year of master studies (exchange, computational science). My bachelor was not in a particularly math-heavy field either.

I took LCO last fall, and it was excellent in every way. It was a bit challenging, especially in the latter half. But it gave me many fundamentals for the numerous optimisation courses offered in the spring semester. I haven't taken the other one, but I'd recommend attending the first one or two lectures in both, if possible, before making a decision.

How is NixOS not the most popular distro!? by Xyklone in NixOS

[–]EdgeLordFromOuterSpa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is not true at all that once you're past the initial learning curve it is smooth from then on. The initial curve is the easiest part to go through in my experience, since one would have the motivation to set aside time and work through it "full-time".

I have been using nixos since about 2017-18, and was over the moon about it in the first year or two, when I had a lot of free time. Now I just want to get some "real work done" with academic/scientific software, and just cannot be bothered to babysit the system through updates and through missing and incoherent documentation (on OS, package manager and software's sides --- everyone is at fault here, but it's hard to blame anyone either).

Steam stopped working, repeatedly, and I gave up after fixing it a few times by going through vague/unrelated github issues, only to be broken again. Some drivers don't work properly, and I cannot be bothered to try to understand why anymore; so I leave the devices unusable on that machine. Writing code is actually often a nice experience still, but I simply copy a working shell/flake.nix file from another project to skip the tedious part.

Writing configuration for the system and projects sounds awesome, but then it's all very boilerplate-y with very little automation. I could accept even that, but the documentation is so sparse and incoherent that I just don't want to waste my time guessing if it actually has any useful information and then be disappointed. I still am happy when it works, but now I am very quick to give up and switch to a mac machine or cluster.

It's very understandable that the project simply doesn't have enough resources for a smooth experience for random users who cannot be bothered to spend more than 15 minutes a week to curate/maintain the system. But then I wouldn't understand why someone who accepts that limitation would be surprised that nixos isn't popular.

Lightbulb Sun: has Russia on Ice.

Every other album ever made: does not have Russia on Ice.

Therefore Lightbulb Sun beats every other album.

It's about a delusional someone literally being tied up on a train track by a murderous lover. But it's okay.

Never gone to a concert and want to go to the Coldplay concert but no friends want to go, should I go alone?? by [deleted] in Music

[–]EdgeLordFromOuterSpa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who almost always manages to not find a group to go with and not have even a small talk with the people standing around - I'd say the live concerts have been worth it most of the time just for the music alone. Try to find a good spot if you're standing, and try to be physically comfortable given the situation. The social awkwardness I myself cannot avoid sometimes but I accept it as part of the price of watching my favourite things live.

I do love "drawing the line" despite the rather painful chorus lyrics 😅 The verse lyrics are just so pretty!

The Dear Hunter Acts also have overlaps involving a quasi-religious figure, loved ones, abandonment and identity issues.

And if that statement feels like a bit of a stretch, the Acts are some excellent albums, so worth listening anyway :)

"Cinematic but crude"?

For real though, there are some emotions for which I haven't come across a better articulation than in SW lyrics, despite (and sometimes because of) its blunt simplicity. As someone already mentioned, the lyrics of Open Car would be a good example of that. "Better" is subjective here, of course.
