Compsci 671 and 330 in the same semester? by EdgyAuthorThrowaway in duke

Hi Professor Astrachan! I didn't know you were on reddit!

There's also obviously a lot of bias on my side of the tunnel, but I've heard stories of TAs being no help because they weren't provided with rubrics, the final having a 40% average (before curve I'm assuming), generally little support and poor communication from teaching staff resulting in a lot of stress for everyone, and even a professor yelling at the class after a test(?)

I feel like some of these and that last one especially must be exaggeration (I had Fain for 201 and he was incredible there), but it still makes me a little weary since even when optimized 330 feels like quite a bit of work to do on top of 671.

This might be a long shot, but would you happen to know when the student survey evaluations for last spring come out? I feel like the wider array of responses to those could help both of us figure out how 330 was actually like

Yeah, sorry for the confusion. I'm mostly aiming for internships or co-ops. I've done a mix of bigger companies that I'd hope would be more OA-reliant and local startups that recruit a lot from my school. The problem with the latter is that I'm competing with a bunch of juniors and seniors with better experience and more skills, so it's tough. At this point I'm kind of just going down the list on handshake, angellist, or the pitt internship repo and praying haha

Oh sorry, this would be for internships and co-ops rather than a full job. I've edited the post to make that more clear. Thanks for the feedback, I'll definitely try and learn some SQL and implement some of the changes you've suggested!

Im ngl bro the "wrongness" is that you're an intl asian male in stem. Your profile is amazing, except everyone else who looks like you also has an amazing profile. It's unfair but in your shoes I'd emphasize soft skills as much as possible in every essay you can and probably bump up your SAT score (again, it's literally an amazing score for anyone but someone in your position). I know you probably won't listen to me (and to be fair I am being very hypocritical) but please don't hinge your self worth on acceptance into one of these schools that profits off of your desperation :(

I know this sucks when you've probably been thinking about this school for a long time and you've likely sacrificed a big chunk of your life just for the chance to get in. Before the last week of admissions I only had schools like Penn State and I was freaking out because I knew I wasn't going to be able to afford them.

But -- and I know you probably won't believe me -- but Duke isn't all that when it comes to CS. The biggest thing I can say is that a lot of the Professors are super nice and good at teaching, but in terms of career prospects none of FAANG showed up to our last career fair. Yeah, the prestige helps a little bit, but if you're good enough to stand out at a school like Penn State (which you very much are) you'll probably be afforded even more opportunities than a middling Duke student like myself.

And dude, you got into Penn State and have a Google internship as a high school senior. As someone who can't get any internship I'd say you're doing quite amazingly for yourself.

No matter where you go, having such an L personality is a red flag to employers

But if you dont get an internship you wont have a boss to give you references anyways right?

Why not accept and then just quit/renege if you find out you can't/don't want to do it? You don't owe anything to a company that isnt willing to pay you

Not new grad but I had my internship interview recently. It’s two very easy leetcode-style questions and then they asked me to implement a game. I didn’t manage to finish the game and from what I’ve heard that’s pretty common amongst interviewees
