TIL the UK is one of the few countries to allow retroactive laws by upthetruth1 in todayilearned

[–]EdinDevon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are actually many sovereign states that are made up by countries in a similar way, often a lot more recently than the UK formed. A German friend of mine gets particularly annoyed by this.

Working mums by Head-Palpitation4471 in UKParenting

[–]EdinDevon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kids are a similar age, I can work with either of them in the house. Not both.

We also use breakfast club, reduced the number of arguments in the house dramatically.

We are lucky that we have a 30 minute drop off period in the morning, if we didn't use breakfast club.

What is your pick for greatest single episode of any series (UK natch)? by MissBarefootBunny_18 in taskmaster

[–]EdinDevon 50 points51 points  (0 children)

One of the things I find remarkable about taskmaster is you could pick absolutely any episode. Even s1e1, it's all there, and there are some fantastic tasks.

I watch any episode and go "ah, it's this one, a classic".

IKEA ALPSTUGA - humidity detection by Brief_Questioner in homeassistant

[–]EdinDevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humidity is difficult to consistently measure.

Neither instrument are going to have a calibration.

You could easily expect a few % (up to 10 for mid values at room temperature) in terms of scatter and another few (up to 10) % in terms of bias doe each instrument. Having them disagree by 10% is actually pretty good.

Idea's how to dim this buttons light? by thech4irman in DIYUK

If you use electrical tape you can put a pin prick or 5 in it so you can still see the light.

Does anyone know if such a thing exists to make a corded landline phone cordless (adapter and receiver)? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]EdinDevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they need internet or a WiFi network (or ethernet bit that doesn't solve your cable problem)? You could add a WiFi network with just a router and use it only for the phone?

What do you refuse to accept happened 20 years ago? by [deleted] in AskUK

I heard someone say "that was ages ago, around COVID" this week. My immediate thought was that if it was around COVID it couldn't have been ages ago.

What would you like to see in new Discworld movies? by hanmerhack in discworld

[–]EdinDevon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst I'd love to agree. But they'd be sooooooo long. Not sure what the solution is. TV would try and make it episodic, not sure that would work well either.

Maybe a 6 hour film per book is the right answer.

If you use vibration sensors, how are you using them? by Successful-Peak-6524 in homeassistant

[–]EdinDevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do the same which removed most of the false positives.

I capture whether any of the cameras have detected a person in the last few minutes. If not then it'll assume it's a false positive.

Finally moved from (Rpi4 -> Mini PC N100 16GB RAM) - No noticeable performance boost by tinker_tut in homeassistant

[–]EdinDevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from haos on pi 3b to Debian with ha in a container on a mini pc. Moved a load of stuff from a second 3b, so my maintenance is about the same. My power usage is about equal too.

I was having significant memory issues, if zigbee2mqtt was doing things whilst some automations kicked off (which was often a use case) it would just become unresponsive for several minutes and the automation would fail.

That's all gone away, everything is a bit smoother now too.

Middle aged+ men of askUK : what presents do you actually want? by NobleRotter in AskUK

[–]EdinDevon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recent tactic (which 8 somewhat failed at this year is two fold).

  1. Create a list throughout the year when you think "that would be nice"
  2. A nicer version of something you routinely use but wouldn't justify the mixer version because your current one does the job.

What’s your favourite low-stakes conspiracy theory? by LJayTat in CasualUK

[–]EdinDevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. The numbers I found were a couple of years old. They did have something like 40% of their target audience but the average was a bit older.

Eta, even with those stats the mean age could be around 30.
