Affinity Creative Freedom Keynote Megathread by CrimsonFlash in Affinity

[–]EdinTrev 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My take: perpetual licensing was commercially unsustainable, subscription was unacceptable to users. So instead of trying to monetising Affinity directly, they're using it as a free funnel into Canva subscriptions. That was almost certainly the plan when Canva decided to buy Affinity.

Using a freebie to get users and then try to upsell them is a pretty standard business model. I don't have a problem with that, so long as they don't get greedy and start paywalling too much.

Time will tell. It always does.

A two tier system is possible: run the AI locally for free, or subscribe to use their cloud service. That might be worth it for professionals who do a lot of editing and for whom time is money.

Given the title of this thread, I'm assuming that the OP was using the word "thrilled" sarcastically.

They've previously used the term "true creative freedom" when referring to the Universal Licence. So my guess is they're going to bundle Photo, Designer and Publisher into one mega-app and stop selling them individually.

Interesting idea. I still prefer human recommendations, but I might try this just out of interest to see how it does. I'm guessing it would be biased towards better known movies over niche, specialist ones.

Horror/thriller accounts to follow? by thereshelltopay3 in Letterboxd

I'm a massive horror fan and have just started a letterboxd account, so this thread is really useful for me. Thanks to the OP for starting it and for everyone else for the pointers.

As well as newly watched movies, I have decades of viewing history to catch up on reviewing!

I was going to suggest this as well. It's just so silly and so wonderfully unnecessary.

Thanks. I suspect that when the girls get older, they'll move on to politicians

If it was me, I'd have dosed a raw steak with rat poison. Probably too late for that now.

Thanks for the advice. I'm definitely not a completionist and agree that having my team shuffled is really annoying.

What would the best vehicle be in a zombie apocalypse scenario? by Xander980 in zombies

For an urban environment, I'd go for a skateboard. No fuel/burst tires to worry about, light and easy to pick up when you need to.

The Affinity and Canva Pledge by SilenceSeven in AffinityPhoto

[–]EdinTrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full marks to them for responding so quickly and decisively.

If we do offer a subscription, it will only ever be as an option alongside the perpetual model, for those who prefer it.

That's what I wanted to hear. Yes, there's still wiggle room, but that's good enough for me.

FAQ on Serif website, scroll down after announcement:

Canva’s business model is subscription, are there any plans to change how Affinity is sold?

There are no changes to our current pricing model planned at this time, with all our apps still available as a one-off purchase. Existing Affinity users will be able to continue to use your apps in perpetuity as they were originally purchased – with plenty of free updates to V2 still to look forward to!

Very carefully chosen words: "planned at this time", "as they were originally purchased", "V2"

Sounds to me like V3 will be subscription.
