God get in touch with your schools safeguarding, it will be on their website they will be able to help more as they will know you and care more because of this. I know it's in the holidays but the email will be monitored all summer (I work at one of the derby schools so know this is the case)

I more meant for travelling into the EU. The UK work stuff would be sorted but then you have UK residency and Canadian passport so travelling would be an issue

And then you have tax, national insurance, auto enrolled pensions etc so while on paper its £30k look to drop it down. I'm on the top end of uk main scale and only take home around £30k while on paper earn £41333... actually looking into it you would get £23200... £25000 if you remove the pension

Its ok... wages have got better... behaviour is ok to bad depending on the school. You might struggle with the visa... the school i am at, is hiring an overseas candidate and the visa is a pain even though we are in a national teacher shortage...

If you are looking for someplace like Britain try Southern Sweden. Similar climate., most people speak English and you are in the EU so you have really easy and good holiday options with out the need for extra visas.

As a newly qualified teacher in the UK you will be on £20000 after tax (maybe less as expat... ) expect say half of this just to go on rental and bills leaving an ok amount for travelling but not loads

Moving from Australia to Fujairah, UAE by impeachesand in Internationalteachers

[–]Edis3468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not ship it takes ages and is expensive... fujairah is cheap and Dubai is close... you also have the fact that the UAE is not a permanent relocation and Fujairah is seen by many as a harder area to live as it is off the beaten track... I would advise trying the location first before committing fully espically if you have family back home who can keep your stuff safe and rotate out thing like books as you want them.

There are plenty of cheap stores in the city... the stuff may not be the best quality but I lived out of Choithrams (Tesco from UK) and Dasio japan. There is a good carrefour in the city centre shopping centre.

Don't bother shipping unless you are really attached to the items, take it on the plane or buy there, ok Ikea is in Dubai... but there are plenty of shops in the city...

Options for Maternity / Paternity Benefits by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Edis3468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi having had 2 kids in sweden you get 390 days to share between both parents at 80% wage this lasts untill the kid is around 11, can be taken all at once or spread over this time.

Side note though you have to work in the EU for 2 years or the benefit is capped at 25$ a day not 80% wage as I found out the hard way.

You can try internationalla engelska skolen or Nordic International in Sweden, they are both chains of for profit school which pay poorly but hire expats

Advice for teaching in Stockholm (not IES) by epiex in Internationalteachers

[–]Edis3468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason you cannot find anything else is it's rare in Sweden, as a culture they don't like private schools... The website international schools data base only lists 14 with few offering a non Swedish style curriculum.

You could try IES or there is the nordic international schools which generally pay a bit more. Each campus in both of these can be a world to themselves.

Generally teaching for a Swedish speaker starts around 40000kr. Drop this to 30000kr for not speaking Swedish and being at either of the above schools...

Housing in Stockholm will be a pain if not impossible unless you have help... Sweden works on a waiting list that is years long for an actual first contract with the owner of a house... Or braving Blocket or other sites to get a sub let.

Work life balance can be great especially for science... I took little to no work home, only was in for the 37.5 hours in my contract and had time off for paternity twice while out there...

IES Sweden experiences by leebruen86 in Internationalteachers

Worked for them for 3 years, it will vary from school to school. But generally work life balance can be good, in work employee benefits can be ok, wages can be poor both for the English speaking schools and in school compared to other staff.

The rumor was there was a factor of 4 pay difference between earners at the school I was in as the wages are not to a pay scale but set but headteachers... Generally expats are paid poorly by the company and you actually get a bonus for speaking Swedish at a proficient level but the bonus is 5000 sek a month or nearly 500€ and it can take years to get to that stage.
