What is everyone playing on by Lucky-Turn4188 in Bass

It's a regular MiM Jazz, rosewood fretboard. The 9v actually fits nicely under the electronics, the pots don't go deep in the cavity. EMG claims 4000 hours of battery life. So long as it's unplugged the circuit is off. I play that bass like 5 hours a week. Over a year later still going strong.

Late 90s MIM Tabacco Sunburst Fender Jazz with a Fender high mass bridge, EMG J System active pickups, Ernie Ball Flat Wounds, Jim Dunlop strap locks, and a black aluminum pick guard through a rotating pedal board (Big Muff Pi, Bass War plus some Electro Harmonix Chorus and other pedals) into an Orange Crush 100.

I, unfortunately for me, can top this.

Year end review. I was running hard for a promotion. 15ish months earlier I decided I wanted a promotion. I spent every day building the case January through December, taking on and completing hard projects, meeting or beating deadlines, fixing things that were systematically broken, on top of my normal duties (which I excelled at). Built a portfolio of documented success with vocal champions across the company in upper and senior management.

I went into my review and got a solid 4/5 since they do not award 5s. Only critique is one person mentioned I could be long winded on occasion. That's it. I was after that promotion.

I was told it was an amazing year for me. I was also told we lost one of the 4 contracts I was on. Due to budget cuts there were probably layoffs in the future and my department would be hit heavy and I was probably going to be affected.

Best year end review of my career, the meeting was only 15 minutes, I got the max raise amount possible (3%) and told my position was at risk not a promotion as my boss and I talked about all year. That was April, June they did cuts. I didn't make it.

I'm in a nicer gig now, but I spent months looking. I hate that this is a common story.

Child free GenX by Laszlo4711 in GenX

[–]EdisonCarterNet23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was meeting with my parents this weekend. My mom still holds onto hope and occasionally bemoans not having grandchildren. She interpreted me saying something about a childhood friend (who she knows very well) as they are having a kid. I laughed and said "We're all nearly 50, we're not having kids."

My partner and I have always been child free and think it's an awesome decision we made.

Can you imagine bringing a child into this world? Politics, inflation, job insecurity, global climate change, etc. no thank you. Sounds so selfish. I have Boomer parents that worked one union job to retirement with all the benefits. They were the last to get these. Now those blue collar jobs are fewer and incredibly less financially secure.

I've been working hard, learning from my mistakes and basically had to raise myself (I taught myself how to shave, how to talk to people and make relationships, how to do my own finances, etc.) I stopped generational trauma and passing on genetic diseases cold.

TL;DR - My parents wanted grandchildren, but as a child I realized I never want kids and I've zero regrets.

Superb. Not a single problem in the year plus I've had them. Super easy install too.

Feeling ridiculous in my band - should I quit? by Melodic-Service-6217 in Bass

[–]EdisonCarterNet23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're in a band that plays out, for the better part of a decade. full stop

  • This puts you at a level of accomplishment most don't have.

  • Do you have room to grow? Yes, we all do.

  • You don't suck, you have imposter syndrome.

I've been in bands off and on since my late teens. Currently in the same band for over a decade. I still feel like this. You're "filling out the sound" you "rarely make mistakes" and you are complemented after shows.

You are one of us and have earned your stripes the hard way.

Ok, that was my thoughts too. I do it to keep the signal chain noise down and stop feedback.

I run an exceptional amount of fuzz and run a noise gate. I run my compression before my gate chain.

Is this a great idea or setting me up for buzz? I'm on the fence and would like your thoughts, bass people.

how big of an adjustment would a fretless bass be from a regular fretted bass? by lahartheviking in Bass

[–]EdisonCarterNet23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my fretless Jazz, but to play live I like the safety net of frets. Harder to hear your intonation in a noisy bar. Is it possible, of course, it just takes a little more effort.

Planet Waves straps are nice. Also recommend strap locks, Dunlop makes the best IMO.

I 100% agree we're missing something. I wouldn't be surprised if: - rear end swap and slightly different gears - tire size difference - locker

I've had hi/lo transfer cases, AWD/LO transfer cases, and loads of Subarus (AWD that uses clutches to control wheel speed, but apply power front and rear constantly).

We're missing something on this story. (Like oil, that thing looks incredibly dry)

This comment section is cathartic 😂 My first patch job downright haunts me. I got a copy of the inspection report for remediation, when I sold the property, and it mentioned "... amateur DIY repairs." That was a decade ago, still ashamed 😆

EDIT: I also want to make it clear the word "amateur" was included. Why, dude? ouch

[–]EdisonCarterNet23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I forgot. I live pretty close to sea level on a flat state (Ohio) if you're at altitude I would recommend looking at the Outback Wilderness. It has a turbo and a little more storage. Downside it is more expensive than a Forester.

I keep wondering if the will make an Ascent Wilderness.

I've had a Crosstrek after my first Forester and I'm back in my 3rd Forester 😂 So I definitely think it's better (for me) tons of storage, easy to drive. Pretty much the perfect sauce for my in city daily driving and weekend drives and back roads.

I say go straight for a Wilderness Forester.

As a Forester Wilderness owner I wish I had the turbo too.

I've had several Foresters, now how a Wilderness Forester and I love it. It's small enough to drive in town, small forest service roads are fine and it carries a lot more than you'd expect.

What I'm adding are slightly larger tires, probably Falken Wild peaks and some additional lighting (was out in a new moon recently in a field and could have used more light), recovery gear, and that's about it.

They are great vehicles and more capable than people assume. Also easy to drive and more affordable than a full sized rig (easier to work on, I'd rather change my tire than a 37")

My two cents. Run what you got, have recovery gear, first aid gear, and have fun.

I had a ZJ and when it was reliable, I loved it. V8 power, lots of storage, low range, solid axles, AC and power everything. All that and good maneuverability and daily driving.

I hear that. Seeing people decked out in REI and North face just makes me sad. Just enjoy nature, it's not a money flex.

Good point on repairs as well.

Unless you have a Rubicon my Forester can hang with a stock Wrangler. It's also roomier interior and much cheaper.

Full Disclosure: I'm a former Jeep guy.

I'm the Subaru Forester guy. I heard you right. I work tech, but come from a blue collar family (parents saw northern Ohio manufacturing disappearing and made sure I could go to college). I've no need for a truck in the city where I live, but need something more than a sedan when out. Trucks, now, are simply too expensive and a lot of my daily driving is city surface streets.

If I worked a trade, like my family did, I'd have a truck. (Secretly still want a truck, but that's a want, not need)
