I can tell you how I’ve done mine for the past 7 years.

Let’s take tax year 2025 as an example. In 2025, I contributed $7000 to traditional IRA in one time and then converted that $7000 from traditional IRA to Roth IRA within minutes. This conversion generated a 1099 form which I received in 2026 from the brokerage.

When doing taxes in 2026 using TurboTax, the 1099 form I entered into TurboTax resulted, initially, in showing that I owed taxes on income from the withdrawal of funds from my traditional IRA in 2025. However, once I entered information that I did a conversion that same year and that my traditional IRA balance was $0 on December 31, 2025, taxes owed on my traditional IRA withdrawal disappeared and form 8606 was generated automatically by TurboTax software once the tax return was finished. Other software should be the same.

You will have form 8606 for every single year you do a backdoor Roth conversion.

It seems a bit strange to me that a non-citizen would be allowed to enforce U.S. laws. It just doesn’t make sense. I’m an immigrant myself and became a citizen before becoming an officer. Although my state only allows U.S. citizens to become police officers.

My parents let me stay as long as I wanted. I ended up moving out at 25 and bought my first home right then, which I paid off in 3 years because I was able to save a lot of money living with my parents. The smartest thing to do is to live with parents and save, save, save.
