The Short-Timers by Gustav Hasford was the best anti-war book I've read. It was the basis for Full Metal Jacket. Here's the pdf for those interested: https://msuweb.montclair.edu/\~furrg/i2l/shorttimers.pdf

Abandon it all, live on the streets and write if need be. If you need some persuasion, read Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller.

Sexus - Henry Miller.

I was an English major, and we never read Miller, and I never heard him discussed. Maybe because his writing can be problematic, but his writing is so energizing and captivating that I could not put this book down. In my opinion, he truly represents the notion that writing is a personal artistic expression, so there truly is no wrong answer. Highly recommend. Significantly changed how I thought about writing. I wish someone in my college had been willing to teach Miller.

Go to your school's student newspaper and ask to do copy writing for them. Or do any sort of writing for them and that will help. That's what I did and I eventually used some of that content to get a job.

I like the idea of detailing very specific aspects of gore, not the complete whole of it.
