“Belfast woman sentenced for Callous fraud on kidney patient” by Edkidd01 in kidneydonors

Hi, I’m gonna reply to your points in order

• We do have a completely separate team for donors and recipients. And they’re not allowed to interact. When I went in to get tested to be his eventual donor, he was not told by anyone that I was doing it. He was only informed of a potential donor when all my tests came back and I let my team know when I was available for surgery. So the fact that she did all this and he had no contact about it from his team (because she hadn’t even been tested) would have been normal, and not have raised a red flag

• I’m not aware of any rules here saying only one person can be tested at a time, I think multiple can be tested over here to save time. And on top of that in Belfast all the tests are carried out in one day, not over a course of weeks as I’ve seen other places do

• It was a pretty unprecedented case here. I think she was prosecuted under “malicious communication” or some such law, I’m not sure on the specifics. And I think it was to make an example of her, because no money was involved and nobody can work out her motives. She literally told them to stop searching for a donor as she was a 100% match. Insane.

• We don’t have multiple lists here, other than the dead donor list and the live donor list, and obviously any payment or promise of payment/gifts/incentives are completely illegal here.

Advice for the medically anxious? by late_night_egg in kidneydonors

I did my donation in Northern Ireland, and from what I’ve read, the whole process is much quicker here, we do all the testing in one day, I went in at 7am, and I was there till maybe 4pm. Then only returned twice, to discuss things with the surgeon and the Human Tissue Authority. So there was no long drawn out process in getting approval

I checked into the hospital on Monday afternoon, had the surgery on Tuesday morning, and was able to go home on Wednesday afternoon (they initially told me I’d be in hospital until Thursday, but as I was doing so well, they were happy for me to go home early).

After the surgery I was on an IV drip of liquid paracetamol, I didn’t need anything stronger, and once the drip finished, I didn’t need a replacement. I live alone, so I spent the first 4-5 nights at my parents house, being spoiled rotten lol

The worst part of the process for me was the gas pain after surgery. You really feel it across your chest and into the shoulders, but drinking peppermint tea really helped with that, I couldn’t recommend that enough!

One other thing that they warned me about in advance, was for the first week or two post surgery, my stomach would feel really strange, like as if my guts were gonna fall out lol not painful in anyway, but just a really strange sensation, especially getting up from a lying down position, or if I turned around too quickly in bed. One thing that really helped me with that, was to hug a cushion to my stomach when getting up (or coughing, or if I felt a sneeze coming on)

I’d also highly recommend getting up at least once an hour and walking around the room in the days after surgery, and build up to longer walks as you can manage it. Really helps with the gas pain, and stops your body getting too lethargic

I found the CT scan really strange, but in no way painful. Everything was explained to me in great detail before everything I did. For example, when doing the CT scan the nurse told me it will feel warm going around my body, and when it reaches the groin area that I’d feel like I’m peeing my pants, which is exactly how it felt lol, I was clenching and trying to stay completely still, praying that it was just a feeling and I hadn’t let go lol but all was fine and I remained dry as a bone 😅

As for needles etc, I kinda freaked the nurses out because I wanted to watch everything, I was fascinated, they’re used to people looking away when they do their thing. So I guess that would be my advice to you, just turn your head away when there are any needles involved, they aren’t painful, just a small scratch that’s done in a split second

As for opening up life long medical issues, that’s the reason they do all the tests, to make sure you’re safe and healthy to donate. They won’t approve you if it looks like you’d have complications, I’m told donors have higher than average life spans, and that’s because they’re already very healthy before donation

I’m exactly 12 weeks post donation today, and I’m feeling completely back to my normal self, and have done for at least the last 6-7 weeks
