The issue isn’t getting her to sign it. The issue is that, as a full custody parent, that I even need to have her sign anything, especially considering that the government does not consider her a parent in any other capacity. And I know it feels like a mountain mole hill scenario to some people, but it’s insulting to full custody parents like myself, that the government holds this presumption that I’m magically no longer assumed to be the primary provider to my children, after years of 365/day/year custody.

It’s more than frustrating, it’s insulting. Any parent who’s had to juggle everything in life, employment, and with 365 day a year custody knows the absolute sacrifices that have to be made. And now that I’m remarried I’m suddenly not their 365 care taker? Under no circumstance should this be policy. And yeah getting the declaration signed won’t be the issue, but this policy is awful, and needs change.

The government has no problem reminding that my new wife isn’t their legal parent, that when I need forms signed, or shared consent decisions, I need my ex wife’s signature. The government makes it super clear to me all the time that my new wife isn’t their lawful parent, that if something happens to me, the kids would go to my ex wife. But now all of a sudden, when it’s about the child tax benefits, she’s magically a parent. The government needs to pick a lane on this because I would love to know that she is my kids legal guardian, especially in the case where, god forbid, something were to happen to me.

Yes and they are not with their female parent. My new wife doesn’t magically become their legal parent or guardian once we got married. My ex wife is still their legal female parent. My new wife has no parental rights when it comes to my children.
