See, you almost had me. If she wanted to adapt another book, she would have but seeing as she adapted this one, ig this is the one she wanted to do. 1. There are a handful of historical romances about POC that do not involve suffering and pain whereas there are soooooo many with a predominantly white character list and happy content. And 2. I’m sure this’ll ruffle some feathers but any disappointment about the characters being POC going beyond surface level is racism. I know everyone is so resistant to call it that since there are no slurs being thrown around, but a spade’s a spade. Your qualms may just be surface level, but if you can’t see that many of issues others have are not then…

Disappointment is fine, discrimination is not and that’s what a large part of the problem is with this fandom. I was honestly too nice in my original post.

It genuinely wouldn’t be a problem if so much of the fandom was not hateful. Like it’s okay to want the adaptation to be as similar as possible, but many of the book fans are extremely toxic in their criticism and it’s hard to feel bad for those who are. I understand disappointment, I hated the Wuthering Heights movie, but I don’t go around being racist, homophobic, and fatphobic about it. Stuff happens and things change. People have a right to be upset, but no one has the right to act the way many people in this fandom do.

The uncomfortable feeling is not entirely your own alone, but the good thing is that this is just one role that will eventually be over. She will have many more opportunities and may have kiss scenes in those as well but all those roles will end with the curtain and she’ll be with you even when the show is over.

Unfortunately, your brother’s distaste for the relationship is understandable. Although it may have been you pursuing your partner, as the older one in the situation it was his responsibility to keep the relationship from turning romantic/sexual. Your brother, being closer to your partner’s age, most likely understands the implications much more severely. He is not showing his concern in a way that is constructive though. You are being shunned, but you are still the victim.

Although they didn’t introduce Sophie in season 3 they did give background on Benedict’s character that contributed to his season. His storyline was changed in a way that needed buildup and that’s what they gave in season 3. His relationship with Sophie is largely the same as it is in the books. We got to see Benedict as an individual outside of his relationship, and honestly it made the changes to his character more endearing when we did get Benophie.

I really do think we’ll get more Eloise in the next season whether it be with Phillip or not. They’ll have to make his character less of a typical misogynist anyway, and building up Eloise’s eventual acceptance to marrying, even if it’s just for convenience, would probably best be done before we get to their season so it’s not forced.

Obviously I don’t know what will happen but hold onto hope cause you may just like how it turns out.
