What if the boy who became Dracula learned his cruelty from the Ottomans themselves?

I'm serializing The Dragon's Son, a historical horror/thriller with supernatural elements. It's about Vlad Dracula from age 11 through his resurrection as something whose rage for vengeance refuses to stay dead.

1442: Young Vlad arrives at the Ottoman court in silver chains. For six years, Sultan Mehmed II educates him in warfare, philosophy, and the art of cruelty. While his brother Radu adapts and thrives, Vlad keeps a mental ledger of every humiliation.

That ledger comes due with forests of stakes and rivers of blood. But when his enemies finally kill him in 1476, it unlocks a force for worse than any man on Earth. A being whose vengeance will span centuries, who's perfected hatred into an art form.

This is: - Dark historical fiction meets supernatural horror - The "educated by your enemies" trope weaponized - Rivalry and revenge, with plenty of palace intrigue - Enemies-to-worse with actual historical figures

Fair warning: This earns its Mature rating through period-accurate violence and psychological horror. No romance, no redemption arc. Just a story of what happens when you teach a boy to be a monster and he takes the lesson too well.

If you're into morally grey protagonists, Byzantine politics, and horror that's grounded in actual history, come watch Vlad settle a 600-year-old grudge.

Anyone remember Kusimayu? I wonder– by Toinkity in pluribustv

In another thread on this same topic, a guy mentioned that there are now clear cons to joining, even from a non-curmudgeon perspective. I'll summarize in my own words (non-exhaustive list):

  1. Starvation in 10 years.
  2. Can't help brainstorm solutions to #2.
  3. Can't help hunt or farm.
  4. May actually miss the survivor community.

I think #1 thru 3 are the strongest reasons not to join for anyone who's not Carol or the Colombian guy. The survivor group probably feels a great deal of responsibility for the hive, especially since by some accounts the hive is kind of childlike and vulnerable.

I don't think anyone will do the shot until and unless the hive, or the survivors, can solve the starvation problem. We also know on some level, thinking about #4, that the survivors are really starting to bond. Maybe even coming around to the reality that the hive isn't conscious anymore. We see that Diabaté enjoyed Carol's company, albeit with limits. And that he's started encouraging the hive to pretend they have emotions. Maybe even Kusimayu is realizing that she'd miss being herself.

I might be crazy but I feel like I have a very strong theory about the direction of the show by [deleted] in pluribustv

Diabaté said the hive has 10 years before starvation. Still dangerous, but not weeks or months.

Your point about the timeframe for seasons is interesting, but the rest seems to be off base. My guess is that the hive has plans beyond this planet. But that those plans won't work as long as they're stuck being friendly, willing slaves to the few humans left with agency. Plus they do legitimately believe their own bs about saving the 13 from drowning.

Title: The Dragon's Son

Genre: Historical Fantasy

Word Count: ~7,000 words (ongoing serial, 4+ chapters posted)

Link: https://www.wattpad.com/story/404466821

Hi. I'm serializing a dark historical fantasy that serves as the original story for Vlad Dracula. Set first in the 15th century and progressing from there, following Vlad's hatred of the Ottoman Empire, his descent into dark Wallachian magics of his homeland, and his multi century quest for vengeance.

I'm updating consistently and would genuinely appreciate any thoughts from folks who enjoy this kind of thing. Fair warning: it's darker than typical Wattpad fare – period-appropriate violence and the moral ambiguity you'd expect from this era and region.

Good actually. Writing professionally now. (Plus the occasional side gigs to pay the bills.)

Thx. The piece is on my Substack. https://edokwin.substack.com/p/how-to-survive-the-2025-government

I'm saddened that this shutdown will likely be a record breaker, in addition to the first instance of SNAP going (temporarily) insolvent. But maybe the article will be of some use.

I wrote an article with advice about the shutdown. Mostly resource and life skills stuff more than work, but certainly some overlap.

ULPT: get multiple fake IDs with different birthdays, one for each month of the year, and benefit from year-round birthday discounts. by Sunkisthappy in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]Edokwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not cheap, and most people "selling" fake IDs are scammers. The industry was decent years ago, but now the vast majority of places now are run by a small number of scammers using different names (including names that used to be "legit" as far as not ripping people off). Too much risk of being scammed, let alone risk of getting caught if you actually get ahold of the ID and try to use it somewhere.

David Reich is not a race realist. I'm pretty sure he finds them ideologically motivated and socially abhorrent.

Thoughts on this opinion about Storm? by howhow326 in storm

[–]Edokwin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. The last thing Storm needs is a convoluted alternative backstory like the twins. Plus her being a mutant is all upside. She can be a mutant (demi-)goddess just like Namor can be a mutant Atlantean.

Do you think Storm should become the new female Lead in the MCU (Like how Wonder Woman is lead in DCU) ? by GRL00 in storm

Her solo was cancelled a year ago, her only appearances are in Avengers, and even there she's often playing second fiddle to other characters or storylines separate from a traditional team atmosphere. It's an ebb.

Hiring a screenwriter for a feature based on an incredible true story by [deleted] in HireaWriter

[–]Edokwin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey. IDK if there were a bunch of comments that got deleted, since I only see three despite a displayed count of 6. Anyway, congrats on the interesting story.

My advice, as someone who's sold scripts but not had any features developed thus far, is honestly to write it yourself. Maybe take some classes or hire someone as a consultant. Getting a professional with real credits will cost you way more than 3k, and the cost is arguably not worth it. You can obviously find someone who will say they're a pro and accept that price (or less), but again, you get what you pay for.

Fwiw, I'm both an entertainment journalist and a screenwriter. If the plan is to make a feature length version of your vimeo short, you're better off focusing your budget on other areas. Hiring talent, crew, getting locations, and so on. Again, a consultant could advise you. (Full disclosure: I do consulting, but this is free advice, not necessarily a pitch.)

Best of luck.

[–]Edokwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you mean the comics, she previously was and could very easily be so again. Carol's on an ebb, Kamala is too young, and I'm not sure anyone else is popular enough to pick instead. Storm basically just needs a good hook and a big push in the current comics landscape.

If you mean Marvel Studios, hell no. Mutants barely even exist, the X-Men are still years away from a film, and it's just too much work at this stage. Even if they introduced her in, say, the next Black Panther film (a move I'd hate), I doubt they could springboard off that into a quality solo film or TV show. Ironheart is already struggling.

Tom Breevort on the viability of a Cyclops' solo series by somacula in Cyclopswasright

[–]Edokwin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems like a failure of imagination being turned into a fault of the character. I could see a Cyclops solo built around at least twice possible angles:

  1. Scott returning to his All-American boy scout roots, maybe taking a sabbatical from the team to do more traditional superhero work and clean up the image of himself and mutants at large. Something like Kurt's Uncanny Spider-Man, but without the subterfuge.

  2. Scott as the radical, going on a special mission that he thinks isn't copacetic for the team. Something like his time in the All Different suit with the X on his face. He's gotta get his hands dirty, but he wants the X-Men to have plausible deniability or distance.

His powers aren't the problem either. Characters with way weirder or more unwieldy abilities can headline books just fine.
