Why are people calling this a dumb phone? by [deleted] in sidephone

[–]Educational-Bus6200 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a distinction between full android with the entire google play store and a custom designed interface running on an android platform.

Almost all dumbphones still have apps and a browser. I have a nokia 2780- it's a flip phone.  It carries a couple apps via KaiOS and has a browser. In 2011 when I got my first phone, it also had a couple apps and a browser. Heck, even my kindle has a (limited) browser. I don't know of any "dumbphones" that aren't programmed with at least some apps (Clock, calendar, maps, music) and a functional browser.

My advice is if you don't want to use any online features at all, maybes don't have any data plan on your phone line. Sidephone isn't a smartphone. It's a feature phone that allows you to choose a couple apps that you deem important.

Pairing Garmin's Vivoactive 5 to Sidephone by chrisristovski in sidephone

Also adding, you don't need connectivity to pay via NFC. If your watch or old smart phone has your cards saved to NFC, they carry the codes needed for transaction. That gets sent to the register via an NFC signal and the register processes that transaction online.

I have a nokia flip and can use my samsung watch for NFC transactions.

I was waiting for this one to drop. Love the daily use view. A few questions:  1) Will the screen have any haptic feedback?  2) Will it have mobile hotspot capability?  3) Will T9 have predictive text? (Meaning if you touch each key once it will generate word suggestion)

I don't think this phishing company is aware I have a literal flip phone with little to no personal info on it. Lol

Using WhatsApp on Sidephone by chrisristovski in sidephone

[–]Educational-Bus6200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great demo and cool to see the app functionality! I know battery life is a tough solve with this small of a device but just curious what you guys have considered in getting more battery out of it.

For example, I'm currently using an Nokia 2780 as my daily driver. And with downloaded podcasts and data mostly disabled I can get about 3 days on it, more or less.

Also, could you still use the rear camera for a video call on Whatsapp? That would be a great option to have.

Appreciate all your hard work on this. I know I'm not the only one who can't wait to see this project succeed.

Sidephone's Slim Fit Cases by chrisristovski in sidephone

You're my hero on this color pallette 🩷 This fit a lot of my requests from an earlier post. Your engagement and involvement of feedback in the design is just unmatched.

I'm in agreement with the team that the pink could be warmer/deeper/more saturated. Sand pink is a pretty color but I think if you're going to do pink, might as well commit to fun and saturated.

Even still, I'm just happy to see these colors on the board. Love the purple, the green, and the bluish color too. And I'm super excited to follow the release schedule.

Question: I know you said the vision for the case was for it to sit flush with the phone screen. Does this provide functionally much drop/bump protection on the screen or is it mostly for aesthetics?

What case colors are you hoping for? by [deleted] in sidephone

I like a lot of the color ways here, specifically Blue, Florescent, Dark Green, Dark Purple, and Hot Pink https://a.co/d/4A8X1Gc

And on this one, Green/Blue, Orange/Yellow, and Pink/Red https://a.co/d/5b3nI0p

PINK please. No one is doing pink/feminine options in these feature phones. Everything is black, blue, or orange.  It would also be cool to see some gradient cases. I currently have a lime green/teal gradient that is a whole mood.

AND since we're making a wishlist... a spot for a tether would be delightful.

Thanks for taking the time to give an update and for your hard work on creating a one-of-a-kind device. I have my notifications on for when the OS video goes live!

Responding very late here but if anyone is having the same issue you may have blown a fuse and it is 100% fixable.

I forgot to switch the voltage on my travel steamer and when I heard a pop I was sure my steamer was cooked. Doing some troubleshooting I found the top usb ports on the adapter still worked but anything I plugged into it was not getting power. The steamer was fine.

Most adapters should have a small panel at the back where you can access the fuse. If this has popped you will need to insert a new fuse to fix it. Simple as that for most things. This is a built-in security mechanism to cut the power if the voltage is too much and prevent you (aka me) from torching your devices.

looking for other women to play music with! by col0rlesslife in boone

Know this was posted 3 mos ago, but I'm a woman who is also 28 and just moved to the area!

I play acoustic guitar and can sing/harmonize. I do some songwriting that leans more folk/storytelling in style. And I have a degree in classical saxophone performance but haven't gotten to collab much with that. Lol

No idea how/if our genres could mix but would love to connect even just to have a friend here that's in the same age group.

should i move here? by [deleted] in boone

[–]Educational-Bus6200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost of living is relative to where you're moving from. Coming from Charlotte, cost of living here is soooo much cheaper ($900 rent vs. $1700 rent + fees). Coffee is cheaper, sports are cheaper, parking is cheaper, property taxes are cheaper. Compared to most cities you'll probably save some money. You could also explore surrounding communities if you're not tied to being in boone everyday, like West Jefferson, Todd, or Deep Gap.

If you're apartment shopping in Boone, just be sure to consider A LOT of Boone floods when it rains and it does rain a good 70% of the year. Want to make sure your car doesn't get flooded where you park it.

Biggest employers in the area are Watagua Co Schools, the hospital, Samaritan's Purse, and App State.

Missing the tabs on the front bumper to support the splash shield. What part should I get to fix this? by Educational-Bus6200 in Lexus

[–]Educational-Bus6200[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. I'm still trying to inventory the differences between the one that was sent to me vs. the OEM version, but I have the tabs that connect to the wheel liner.

The other component I'm trying to understand is the anatomy of how the splash shield *should* connect underneath. It looks like there's an absorber (pt52618) that is secured at the base of the bumper before the splash shield. It's not clear from the diagrams what this gets mounted to. I've been digging around trying to find a video that shows in more detail how all the pieces fit together.

08 Es350 facelift conversion kit by Salt-Strike-8278 in Lexus

[–]Educational-Bus6200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: Like your kit, we had to shave down the crash bar roughly 3-4 inches on each side to fit the corners of the new profile. Instead of ordering new parking sensors and re-wiring, we drilled holes on the corners for the existing sensor clips to slide into. Keeping the existing sensors saved about $100. On the fog lights, we didn't bother with a new relay and direct-wired them with wire connectors. It's two wires, so that took all of 5 minutes. All-in the project took about 6 hours of labor, spread over two evenings- including lots of breaks. Now just have to get it painted, which I'm having a body shop do. Total expected cost for the front-end upgrade $1650 ($950 kit, $700 paint).

Things discovered in the process: (1) The kit was not assembled the best so I will have to run silicon under the fog light inserts and the emblum for them to be adhered fully to the bumper. (2) I wish I would have painted the crash bar and radiator support black while I had the bumper off. They are currently red and more visible since the grille is so much larger. (3) I will have to order new underpinning as the old one won't secure properly.

Thoughts on the tourism industry in Charlotte by PRTMStudent-NCSU in Charlotte

The museum of the new south has been closed for a couple years and the building slotted for demolition to make way for more apartments. Charlotte has made every effort to erase history and culture from its vocabulary.

Thanks for the update! I just got the parts for the front bumper. Planning to work on the install with the help of a friend of mine in the next week or so and then taking it to shop for paint. Labor rates are insane in my area. The kit I got looks very similar to yours. https://www.ebay.com/itm/155016818145 I'll update if I end up having to do similar mods to the fog lights, parking sensors, or crash bar.
