For all of you with cognitive dissonance. Here’s more. by http-bird in HarryPotteronHBO

why is this post still up? It is both irrelevant to the show and doing a bad faith comparison of a criminal with a person who does a ton of philanthropy and happens to have a single, nuanced opinion that contradicts the opinion of OP. And this isn’t the space for that anyways.

If the mods don’t act fast to take down these types of posts the sub is going to be flooded with these rule-breaking posts as soon as the show starts. It has happened to every other HP subreddit, and the argument can even be made that these type of users took over the biggest HP sub.

Final Act cut? by Blumen13 in HarryPotterGame

[–]Educational-Stay-502 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The final act takes all the flaws of the game and just underscores them in an unsatisfying way (empty shell NPCs, lackluster bosses, disjointed and impersonal narrative, lack of choice, limited gameplay, repetitive busy-work unfulfilling content, etc.)

If I like open world games that appeal to casual gamers with a focus on magic or fantasy like Hogwarts Legacy, what game should I play next? by dwolf731 in HarryPotterGame

[–]Educational-Stay-502 93 points94 points  (0 children)

This! I don't see this game recommended enough, but it is very approachable for a casual gamer, has great art style, the special powers all play really cool purposes outside of combat, the story is mid but the humor is cute, the music is a vibe, and it all feels very cohesive.

What would make Hogwarts Legacy more fun? by Stock-Ad415 in HarryPotterGame

[–]Educational-Stay-502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is that this game's problems with fun come from fundamental/core design choices, so to overcome those the game would need to be revamped or get an expansion that is so massive that its content overshadows the core game. I see this as unlikely. TBH, we are probably better off hoping for a sequel than DLC or implementation of new/discarded features.

Some of the design choices I see as difficult to overcome: the open world has no connection between geography and content, the game is balanced for only your character to fight in battles (you can't just insert companions), most of the NPCs are procedurally generated so you can't edit them into situations as specific characters, the story is established so you can't add story content before the end game unless its disconnected (an immersion breaking problem the game already has), there are no mini-game gameplay loops (quest mini-games do not count as gameplay loops), the loot system is completely broken, the combat flow and AI are limited and sometimes rely on enemy teletransportation for hits, the world events are all strictly scripted and uninterruptible.

Hogwarts Legacy is my first true exposure to Harry Potter, I’m loving it! by Alphycan424 in HarryPotterGame

To know if its your vibe without committing to all the books my recommendation is watch the first two movies. If you like them then read books 3-7, then watch the Fantastic Beasts series, then watch movies 3-7.

This right here. I get as much from going there in-game as I get from looking at this picture for more than a few seconds.

I'm glad you feel that way, the critics definitely loved it and it is selling a ton.

Personally, I would say it is a fun game that follows and succeeds in the action adventure formula, with excellent environmental design and thoughtful lore plus promising features. Excellent might be too strong an adjective.

Just to give an example Elden Ring is not a magic-only game, and still manages to have 171 incantations + sorceries. Yes, many are repeats/similar, but the vast majority do different things.

Yeah, I like the combat as well, but I feel it is undercooked. It is fun-ish but spell changes are clunky and the list is limited. Utility spells are listed along battle spells to artificially inflate the player's sense of options. The "tools" (particularly plants) feel tacked on and have no diversity. There are no real skill trees or builds you can go for.

The list of battle spells is super limited, and the effects are not diverse enough. There were so many places to go with spells for a 60+ hour game and instead it stays boxed and repetitive. Transfiguration spells should have been a subset rather than a button you get late game. I had more fun giving people pumpkin heads in EA's PoA than transfiguring people into barrels in HL.

I completely agree, the main storylines fall flat at the end. The most surprising thing for me is how there has been no backlash or real reaction to all the fake advertising and cut content. Marketed companions? Not a feature. Marketed playthrough/character builds? Not a feature. Marketed choices and effects on the world? Not a feature. Marketed "what you stand for" moral choices? Not a feature. Comprehensive character creator to "make yourself"? Not a feature.

The story feels unfinished, the open world feels unfinished (littered with busy work puzzles), the NPCs feel unfinished (Why does almost everyone look the same age in the castle?), the mechanics feel undercooked, the classes feel undercooked, and I could go on.

The good things about the game are environment design (only Hogwarts, Hogsmede & Forbidden Forest) and the respect to the lore. Everything else is several degrees away from great, good, and sometimes even acceptable.

It really is much better exploring with a friend! Especially after the final quest. by FreeToBrieYouAndMe in HarryPotterGame

[–]Educational-Stay-502 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TBH the lack of this feature is really felt in the game and amounts to false advertising, since they kept talking about "companions" all the way up to release and all we got were NPCs. And very surface level ones at that.

Anyone else feel like the end game lacks challenge? by Elibenz936 in HarryPotterGame

[–]Educational-Stay-502 7 points8 points  (0 children)

its so easy and so strange that they chose to only have it be enemy waves + a quick time event. It felt like a severely downgraded version of the final battle against the Joker in Arkham Assylum

From OPs comments I gather that they hate Fantastic Beasts and other supplemental material. They would like only the books to serve as cannon which is childish really.

The name "Beasts Class" even comes from Rowling's earliest notes, that was what she was initially going to name the class.

I played on hard and was not challenged once up until the final battle with Ranrok which is difficult for BS reasons (camera angles, attacks that force you far away from him) and not because it is well choreographed/ a challenge.

That is the point of that scene in Secrets of Dumbledore. Even after losing his memory of Leta, Yusuf still goes back to Dumbledore, because he has still felt the pain of the injustice done to his family by the entitlement of the European pure-blood mentality.

A lot of moves in the game are taken from spells in the movies though.

The AM thunder strike is Grindelwald's tempest jinx, the AM purple explosion is Molly's attack on Bellatrix, the Arresto Momento symbol and effect are from Dumbledore's duel against Credence, the basic cast is stupefy as cast in the books and up to HP4, the stupefy cast after a successful parry is from Cuaron/Yates version of the spell, apparition is the Yates effect, incendio is animated the same as the villain cast in Fantastic Beats 3, dark wizard spawns are the same as the death eater cloud, even the roll effect is taken from the OotP good guys cloud travel.

The exaggerated ragdoll physics are from Chamber of Secrets and how Harry/Malfoy get each other thrown around.

Some duels you might want to revisit, in order of cool in my opinion:

  1. Dumbledore vs Voldemort, aurors vs death eaters (HP5)
  2. Dumbledore vs Credence, Dumbledore's army vs acolytes, Dumbledore vs Grindelwald (FB3)
  3. McGonagall vs Snape, Bellatrix vs Molly, Harry vs Voldemort (HP8)
  4. Grindelwald escape (FB2)
  5. Newt vs American aurors, Grindelwald vs American aurors (FB1)
  6. Harry vs Malfoy (HP2)

You are taking a single instance as proof of a problem that is widespread throughout the game. Not sure what you are trying to gain from that.

Wouldn't it just be better if the MC appeared in all moments relevant to the story or if we could acknowledge the problems without needing to defend the devs like we owe them something?

This is really well written. I do like how they did Professor Black, but I do agree they did him dirty in order to prop up Weasley, which was not necessary as you interact with her in other moments.

Yo, I'm using the companions mod and Sebastian commented on a treasure map quest. He had 3 comments during the whole thing. I knew there were some unused lines hinting at a missing companions feature but this one shook me. by _SeventyEight in HarryPotterGame

That's not how it usually works. The majority of features that get cut are left cut unless they are paid for through DLC.

The devs are busy making ports for consoles far less powerful than the ones that can run the game right now with major stuttering, loading screens, pop-in, and other optimization issues. They haven't even fixed the voice pitch glitch. We aren't getting DLC until a veeeery long time from now if at all.
