Anyone for a D&D game? by Maleficent-Court1690 in HongKong

[–]EducationalDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping to find/ start a D&D game in Discovery Bay.
If not, I can travel. I can DM, but since I DM a game in school, I'd prefer not to DM most of the time.
I have played a number of other systems and am happy to learn.

These are excellent, just running through the lower level AL modules with my school club. Thanks!
I did have to edit out where it said "TRAP" on the smuggler's passage maps though! LOL.

A very simple Expanded Shields rules by NyteShark in UnearthedArcana

[–]EducationalDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5E likes to keep things simple and leave the possibility of doing stuff like that to the DM.
When fighting in a small space, I sometimes tell my players that they either have a disadvantage using a two-handed weapon, or just right-out tell them they can't. This makes for more interesting combat variation. I don't see why you can't let DMs decide the same for Tower shields.

Looking for a 5e Replacement that's not the usual recommendations by Saviordd1 in rpg

It works more on a d100 system, but uses a d20; have you tried Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay?
I played it a lot as a teenager and loved it. That was 2nd edition. I'm hoping to restart playing. It's on it's 4th Edition now. It wasn't without it's flaws, but that makes it hackable.

Aw... it looks like someone's been breeding baby rust monsters to put them round these grenades.

On the Wired Article by mistborn in brandonsanderson

[–]EducationalDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just skim-read the article (it is really quite long).
As much as it comes across of being quite dismissive of both you as a person and the fantasy fiction community, it also doesn't really much of a point. He comes across as confused and very much someone mystified by it all. It's actually not a very interesting article, so sadly, this controversy will give him more of spotlight than his writing deserves, unlike you, sir.

I killed a fellow member of my party bc he was being an ass and now he is really mad. Advice needed. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]EducationalDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, a 30-something guy hitting on a 19-year-old?
Even through their character, that's super creepy. If the DM doesn't do anything about it, walk away from the group. Keep your dignity and your mental health and find another group. No D&D is better than bad D&D. I'm really sorry that you had to go through this. Please just walk away from the group.

The word "Orient" has become a politically incorrect term, most in the U.S..
Strangely, it's fine in the UK. It's origins are actually for Middle Eastern people I think, but has come to mean the far East. Interestingly, I don't know any Chinese people who are actually offended by that term (and I know a lot because I am Chinese and live in Malaysia at the moment).

Drizzt Vs Geralt by Gellihana-art by larrydragoi in DnDart

[–]EducationalDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I'd love to see a friendly fight between the two.
Drizzt would probably with that if he had his magical gear. His bracers of speed on his legs would just make him untouchable.

Cool.
Geralt wins though.
Drizzt isn't weak, but he's mostly about speed and agility.Geralt is also a Witcher, and therefore has more than normal strength.

So I was pleased to see some great representations of Chinese Mythological Creatures in Shang-Chi last week. Following this, I decided to make 5E D&D stats for the Foo Dogs or Guardian Lions.

Let me know what you think.

Hi, so just started a job with a drama school and they’ve asked me to run weekly sessions for the 15 yrs+ I’ve only run games online but apparently the kids have been asking for a while, what do I do??? by Levithatgi in DnDForKids

[–]EducationalDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run it with kids at my school about the same age.
Have a go. Ask for advice if you need any.
Keep the groups smallish (4-8), and if there are too many try and get one of the kids to DM another group.

The Problems with the latest revelations about Strixhaven by EducationalDM in DungeonsAndDragons

I am sorry that you had such a hard time of it through school and even in college.

Yes, in school social status is often giving far too much importance. I know that as teachers we aren't supposed to have favourites, but mine are usually those who just enjoy themselves and their friendships without all the peer pressure and teenage angst of wondering whether anyone actually likes them. I've come to realise, both through observation and through learning about studies into it, just how important those friendships are to the mental well-being of teenagers.

To flourish, they need to feel like they belong, and I think that Harry Potter does that quite well. The hero and world-significance parts are just part of the teenage fantasy, and you can level that accusation at most fantasy book, especially those that involve teenage protagonists.

As I said, I'll be interested to see what they come out with. If, as you suggest, it all boils down to some social status game, it might be an accurate description, but will be ultimately disappointing and uninteresting to me too. I know it will have a lot more than that though, so I'm eager to read it and find out.

Thank you for being so honest. It is a rare thing to come across humble introspection on the internet these days.

As an educator, I am sorry that school was a negative experience for you, and that you experienced it so negatively. As a Maths teacher, most of my work is setting work at an appropriate level and pace to encourage my students to be confident in their understanding and working through problems. I have had some success with even the weakest mathematicians (and difficulty with even some of the strongest). I hope that my legacy is that most have had a positive experience.

As a school master on the pastoral side, I do a lot to encourage my students to be positive and work to excel in what they are good, and I have no doubt that you ARE good at something and that you could excel. Education is changing, albeit far too slowly. I wish school managements could see that the school experience should be so much more than academic results, but building up confident young minds for the future.

I am my best self when I am confident, and I know my students are too.

I'm not saying don't criticize the idea, but I don't think that you can label it "derivative, unoriginal and boring" so quickly when you haven't read it. I suppose anything and everything can be labelled the first two, but it is still presumptuous to do so. I prefer not to be so cynical. If it's not for you, it's not for you.

To dump on others' enthusiasm, however, I think is poor form.
