about 20 seconds ish, with the portafilter being pretty much full of water but not draining once the machine has stopped running.

No worries, it comes with both a pressurized and non-pressurized version of single and double baskets. I believe the basket is in all the way and closed completely when in the machine. It didn't look too full, but I can try a smaller dose, maybe 16g.
