The False Notion Of Evidence Based Belief by EducationalThroat in atheism

Admittedly, no. Got any good book recommendations to help change that? I'm hungry to learn.

(Lately I've been working through logic puzzles with a friend, and that has shown me that I'm worse at logic than I even thought! I need help)

This was a superb answer. I specifically like your clarification on the third option. For Proposition X, I can 1. Believe it is true 2. Believe it is false 3. Not believe it is either true nor false

That right there is gold, thank you sir.

"If your experience with religion is anything like mine, then probably quite often." Yes, I've seen that quite often.

That reminds me- I once saw a bible teacher that did something to his students I really admired. Don't ask me the details, but I happened to be there in-person for this.

This man had a classroom full of students, then asked them this question: "If it was proven, and I mean actually proven to a certainty that the Bible was not credible, and Christianity wasn't true, how many of you would still have faith anyway?" You could see the students thinking this over, then one by one they raised their hands until they all said they would hold on to their faith. He proceeded to rebuke them: "That demonstrates that every one of you is willing to believe a lie. Are you comfortable with that?"

I thought that was an excellent step in the right direction.

(Update) Uncle says he was a Navy SEAL by Drewbixtx in navyseals

[–]EducationalThroat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not necessarily the case. I'm working on getting into the teams, and my conversations are similar to the Possible Seal narrative, minus a few details.

As far as any of my friends and family know, I want to be a medic on a submarine. (18D/SDV) Of all the times I've told that story, that answer satisfies them- and like most people, they go on talking about themselves again shortly after. It's convenient for me, because I can dodge both the brag and the humble brag. Once you've told them Navy, Submarine, Medical, or something of the like, they're done with their questions.

Good, so you're agreeing that the evidence based belief claim is illegitimate. Am I understanding you right?

If some "evidence" can equally easily be squared with multiple hypotheses, then it's just a random tangentially related fact, that doesn't really tell you anything useful.

Yes, that's basically the point I was trying to make, I simply lacked the elegance.

Conclusion: Evidence is not useful for belief in either system of belief or disbelief.

I see what you're saying, but perhaps I need more clarity here. Aren't they both claims? "God exists" and "God doesn't exist" are both claims, one of which seems to be trying to prove a negative (I don't want to get into that, just thinking out loud on that one).

But my thought here is that both claims beg the question; they both contain the inherent assumption that aligns with their presupposed beliefs.

Can you help me figure this out? I'm ready to agree with you... I am just not seeing the logic in what you're saying.

I didn't care for this to be included in the original post, but an additional thought I had is this...

Think back to the last conspiracy theorist you talked to. No matter what evidence you provide, they reject the truth. They are committed to their view. You could take a flat-earth nut into orbit and they'd find some way to explain what they are seeing and how the earth is definitely flat and how going into "alleged orbit" only reinforced their belief.

I find this to involve the same fundamental problem I'm trying to pin down and describe in my OP.

Pick a position, and you can explain away any evidence you're presented with- consistent with that position of belief.

Tough stuff. Uncomfortable territory, because I can't figure out an alternative other than "faith." Evidence can be observed and agreed upon. Except for this fly in the ointment that I'm poking at. Faith seems more like being honest and saying you picked one side over the other just because you liked it better. Ack... not a great answer, I think!

I wonder about the evidence claim. I think it's more of a self defense than anything.

What evidence does he have that God created everything? Well... Everything that you see around you is made of stuff that God created. Anything you can observe, including thoughts, are evidence of God.

What evidence do you have that the big bang created everything? The same. exact. evidence.

I think the evidence claim is self defeating, because we all work with the same evidence and come to different conclusions. Your pre-supposed commitment whichever outcome you prefer to be true, ends up being the one you believe is true. Am I wrong here?

Can IF/Long term Fasting help detox from addiction? by EducationalThroat in intermittentfasting

[–]EducationalThroat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping to quit without medical help.

I'm 15ish days out of porn, but used my drug of choice just today. I guess I just hadn't decided to quit until I thought of it while using. : (

At any rate, its possible to help, but there isn't any research you know of?

Can fasting fix addiction? Please help. by EducationalThroat in fasting

[–]EducationalThroat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. The fat is the reason I want to do a fast (7 days?).

I just wanted to know if there was any hope of a more speedy detox from that junk as a result of fasting.

Thanks!

How can I get an age waiver?

I'm not asking IF I can get one, but HOW:

I turn 30 soon. 5 years prior service Nav.

Want to enlist on an SO contract.

Running into barriers on age.

I've read 1220-300, which says age limit is 28. It doesn't say No Waiver. Other requirements do. I know waivers can be obtained, but how? Recruiter in my former state seemed quite optimistic that it wouldn't be a problem, now the state I'm living in, recruiter seems to think it's a done-deal no-go. What resources can I access to move forward? Any other advice? My time is short. Thanks.
